When War Passed This Way

Rate this book
When War Passed This Way is the story of the Civil War in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania and Maryland as seen through the eyes of the community of Greencastle, Pa. This small border town was located right in the path of some of the war's major events such Union General Robert Patterson's Campaign in 1861; the Confederate invasion of 1862; Robert E. Lee's Gettysburg Campaign of 1863 and the burning of Chambersburg in 1864. Utilizing many previously unpublished sources, the authors have provided an in-depth look at how a civilian population dealt with adversity during this nation's most tragic conflict. Out of print for several years and demanding collectors' prices, White Mane Publishing Company has made this bestselling book available again, complete with errata sheet.

An excellent local history (I'm from Greencastle). Immersive details about the founding of Franklin county, the livelihoods of the residents, even how special occasions and holidays were celebrated set the scene for how the area met with civil strife and eventual war. I took interest in how military units were formed and then of the troop movements within the tri-state region. This book is a gem. Local library holdings: as of this writing (08/25/23) the book is held at Besore, Coyle Free, and Grove Family in Franklin county and in Cumberland county Bosler, Coy, Fredricksen, John Graham, and Simpson all have copies. I borrowed the 1982 copy a few years back and felt that the book warranted a permanent place on my bookshelf. I purchased the 1987 reprint.
