As was the case in Omnibus I, numerous experts have contributed to this monumental work. You will find all the tools you need to tackle the study of the great works, spanning from early church fathers through the Reformation. Covering history, literature and theology, students will learn to think as Christians as they interact with timeless works. They will also continue to develop their composition and logic abilities and expand their aesthetic sensibilities all in this neatly packaged curriculum. This one-of-a-kind program begins with the student text and teacher CD-ROM. With Trinitarian thinking at the core of the study, students will learn to interact with timeless material in a wise and godly way. Students completing all six years of Omnibus will have carefully studied every book of the Bible, too. The student text assigns the readings in the primary and secondary books for each semester. We have gathered these books into discounted kits. The primary reading covers books that the student will interact with most. Papers, tests, field trips, etc. will generally be more geared to the primary books. Secondary reading is not necessarily less important, but it is given less emphasis. -Veritas Press
This is a 491 page text book done on quality paper with beautiful illustrations and photos throughout. For the squeamish about nudity, there is some in the text, for example Peter Paul Rubens' painting of Adam and Eve and other depictions of Adam and Eve. Funny enough, it has less nudity than the first book in the series, Omnibus I.
The book addresses sex, violence and religion openly with the understanding that the Bible also addresses all these issues in an open forthright manner. The art and texts covered allow the student to enter into the great discussions from a Christian perspective.
This text assumes the student using it will be in eighth grade or above.
Primary books covered are: Church History On the Incarnation The Creeds The Ecclesiastical History The Rule of Benedict The Song of Roland The History of the Kings of Britain Macbeth Sir Gawain and the Green Knight The Divine Comedy The Canterbury Tales The Bondage of the Will
Not enough for you!? There are also 13 secondary books!! The Hobbit The Fellowship of the Ring The Nine Tailors The Dragon and the Raven The Gospel of John The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood A Midsummer Night's Dream Winning His Spurs The Two Towers Henry V Richard III Ephesians The Return of the King
Each book covered has General information such as the author, significance of the work, main characters, summary and setting, and the book's worldview. These books are old, but they are still relevant and very exciting to read.
At the end of each book section there are Sessions of writing, reading and discussion to complete. These sessions include comprehension questions, discussion questions for a group, analysis of the text, application to life. There are ample questions to be answered, papers to be written, books to be read in this course that you could easily stretch the course into two years. This text asks questions that make a student think on their own; not just find the answer in the text provided.
There are also a list of further reading books that can be read with the book edition and pages assigned, really just two, Western Civilization by Spielvogel and Art for Young People by Janson. I recommend buying both right from the start.
This is a very full literature, history, logics an overall excellent classical introduction to the Great Books.
Veritas Press has a curriculum that tends toward break-neck speed insane, so don't feel like a failure if you tackle just half of this book for the full year. You're no slouch.
I strongly advise (maybe insist) that you purchase the Teacher's Edition. It contains the entire text and answers to all of the questions in disk form for your computer along with a student's text. There are so many books and so many questions answered that it would be the height of foolishness not to buy the Teacher's Edition.
