Meg is a lioness on the run. After being used and semi-abused by her pride for more years than she cares to count, she's leaving the pride life behind and heading to Greer, North Carolina. A new life, a new home awaits her there, and she can't wait to begin anew and settle down to make little lions of her own. Only, the one man who qualifies for the job also has a tiny little problem. He's a man-slut. Jacob loves his slutastic behavior and wouldn't have it any other way. Men, women, either, both, they all do it for him. Until he meets a certain curvaceous lioness who changes the rules and makes his bear want something it has never wanted before…a mate. Wow, this was one of the most rushed short stories that I have ever read. Kyle had a lot of things happening here in a very very short time frame (30 pages) which left absolutely no room for developing the world, characters, or even, really, the plot.
But here it is in a nutshell: Meg is in the process of fleeing from an abusive situation and Jacob is big ole' man-whore who just wants to stick his wick in anything with a hole. They meet, there's an instant attraction, Jacob goes into denial and tries to screw the first available body in an attempt to deny their connection but suddenly develops erectile dysfunction. Meanwhile, Meg finds out that she hasn't covered her tracks as well as she had thought and her abusers find her. Suddenly, out of no where, Jacob comes to the rescue and has miraculously decided that he wants Meg and only Meg. The abusers meekly leave, but not before revealing to Meg that Jacob nearly humped some dude in the back alley of a bar. Meg (for no reason) comes to terms with this and decides that, despite just getting out of a horrible situation, she wants to be with Jacob even though she knows absolutely nothing about him except that he sleeps around... a lot. Meg and Jacob proceed to hump like bunnies and profess to wanting to spend the rest of their lives together. Later that same night, while they're napping in post-coital bliss, Meg's abusers break into the house and attempt to kidnap her, which results in Meg and Jacob slaughtering them. And I say slaughter here because there's no real reason given as to why their first and immediate reaction to these guys coming after Meg is to disembowel them. Shoot, they don't even really try to hurt Meg, one of the guys just puts his hand on her shoulder and suddenly he's missing body parts. But anyway, after a handy clean-up of the bodies by a minor character, Meg and Jacob drive into the sunset to live happily ever after. The end.
I think I got some serious whiplash from reading this short story. Primarily because all those events I mentioned occur within a 24 hour time span. This much stuff happening in such a short time span did not allow any for much, if any, character develop. So when Jacob was getting ready to ride some guy like a pony behind a bar after developing a connection with Meg I just did not give a shit. I couldn't even muster any sympathy for Meg and her situation. I just didn't know enough. Why was she in that position in the first place? Why does she get paid so much money for being an unsuccessful breeder? What kind of culture is she living in and who really holds all the power? etc. etc. All of this just lead to me not believing that Meg and Jacob would work out. I figure that after the initial lust wears off Jacob will go back to man-whoring and Meg will once again find herself in a sucky situation.
Kyle seems to be a hit or miss for me. So while I really did not enjoy this short from her, I'll probably still pick up another book of hers in the future since I have enjoyed some of her stories.

Insta love? Mate? Regardless fast paced shifter PNR
Written for mature readers only (18+ years old) due to subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy adult intimate scenes (consensual / non-consensual, MM, MF) and violence.
It seemed like I only so started this book, got interested in the characters and it was over. It contains elements of shifters finding their mates / insta-love, etc.
Maggie was in a hopeless situation - women having to submit twice a month to the males of their pride. Jocab felt he couldn't commit to a one person relationship, he was a wondering bear with a wondering eye.
Super fast read. While I enjoyed the base story, the point was lost in translation. What I mean was everything happened so fast that it felt more like a synopsis than a book.
Meg is tired of being used and abused by the lions in her pride. Her body is up for the taking twice a month and she has had enough. She longs for love by a mate and independence from the archaic traditions of her pride. Disappearing without a trace sounds like a great idea.
Jacob can't be more aptly described other than a man-slut. Men, women, it doesn't matter as long as they're willing. He doesn't believe that there is such a thing as a mate for him, so he takes his pleasure where he can get it. However, getting all hot and bothered for anything walking on two legs is becoming more difficult.
Welcome to the town of Strange Hollow...
Although this is a short story, I didn't find it as appealing as I would have liked. The scene descriptions were excellent, but the relationship between Meg and Jacob seemed to move too quickly to be believable. There was more time spent describing Meg's difficult life and her travel to the town of Strange Hollow than there was of the relationship between Meg and Jacob. I really liked the character of the town matriarch, Jacinda as well as the brief glimpse of the pup Ethan. A town full of out casted misfits definitely has its appeal.
Recommended reading for those in need of a quick and relatively painless short story about a curvaceous lioness and her man-slut.
I've read most of the Strange Hollow titles and with each one I've grown to adore this town and the kooky inhabitants. A whole town full of paranormal misfits is kind of my cup of tea quite frankly and these guys don't disappoint.
Meggie and Jacob make for a fine pair of opposite extremes; Meggie has spent twelve years being used as little better than a breeding machine (with no results thanks to modern marvels) and Jacob has spent all his time screwing everything on two legs. Obvious set up, but fun results.
This was a hot and passion filled tale, though not as high on the erotic list as you'd expect. A warning should be issued that there is m/m sex and there is a rather violent and bloody scene at the end. Let's just say that Meggie proves why the females of any species should bet he most feared.
My only complaint is the abrupt nature of the last quarter, but its a minor complaint at best and doesn't effect my enjoyment of the story at all.
Meg is on the run from her old lion pride. After being pretty much forced to mate with the male lions, she's determined to be in control. The leader/organizer of a small town of Strange Hollow somehow ends up connecting with Meg to offer her a place to stay with the rest of their "misfits." Jacob is one such misfit - a bear who wants to mate with both men and women. He's become a bit of a known slut in town, but it seems to work for him until Meg shows up.
Even after he has been warned off Meg, Jacob can't seem to stay away. Her scent, the way she looks, all of these things end up drawing him in. This story revolves around a sort of "love at first sight" type of mating, controlled by their internal animals. While I'm not a big fan of the rushed l word thing, this story manages to sell it (and throw in some bonus retribution for Meg).
I enjoyed this story, it was shorter then I expected it to be, I thought it would be the same length as the books in the Ridgeville series but the only problem with it being shorter is I'd love to have had more of Jacob and Meg! I love that she had the strength to leave the life she was unhappy in. The pride she was in is nothing like the Ridgeville pride so I'm not sure if this series is in the same universe precisely as the Ridgeville pride. It could be and the 'pride' may not have been a true pride at all! I love that her leaving spurred her female relations to find the strength to follow her and leave that life too! I think Jacob and Meg will do well together although there will undoubtedly be clashes between them to start as they work things out and learn about each other and their pasts!
ok- so not my thing. first RAPE- or as they say in parts- non-consensual sex- so horrible- repeated abuse- as in twice a month for 18 years RAPE!!!! then there is a bi-sexual bear shifter- ok so was not expecting that nor did i want to even start to read about back door MM sex.
good thing it was short and i could skip 99% of it no problem. this is not a series i would continue to read, through all her books are extremely dirty- this was by far the worst.
I picked this up during All Romance Ebooks' Cyber Monday sale. While I didn't expect it to be only 35 pages, it was also much better than I thought it'd be. I'm definitely going to track down other books by this author.
Just a word of warning, there is a scene of m/m sex and a m/f (not hero & heroine) sort-of-a-rape-but-not-quite sex scene. The ending was also felt a bit rushed.
I never really connected to the characters. Everything happened too fast and made the story seem rushed and didn't leave time for the reader to care about or connect with the characters. I do think the premise of the town, Strange Hollow, sounds interesting but it wasn't fleshed out enough for my tastes.
This was a cute shifter love story, something that was a great read for the boat while fishing, will keep reading Celia Kyle she is a great author that love her characters. If you love HEA this will need to be on your shelf to read!
It was a good read but really needed to be longer. The premise was worthy of a full length novel so its current length has you barely getting to know any of the characters.
Short! Could have been great story with some more time spent between the two leads. An abused female lion and a slutty male bear get together their first day together as mates.
My only real complaint would be that it was just too short. There was no real time to build chemistry between the two main characters. The whole lot was too brief.
Good story but it was too short!.. Like I was expecting it to be longer but got real disappointed in the end. I would've liked it to be a little more depth into the story.
