3,5 sterren. Absoluut beter dan Ster van Acht: Niet volgens het script is goed geschreven en leest prettig weg: het wordt nooit saai, maar een echte leestrigger is er ook niet. Vrij voorspelbaar, en hoewel het verhaal boeiend is, is het ook vooral dramatisch en tragisch en bovendien vrij statisch: alles overkomt de personages eigenlijk gewoon en ik had niet het gevoel dat ze zich echt ontwikkelden, waardoor het een beetje afstandelijk bleef. Wel een hoopvol einde, maar ook wel weer enigszins zinloos. Uitgebreide recensie volgt nog.

Niet volgens het script lijkt op basis van de cover en de achterflap een standaard liefdesverhaal over een meisje en een jongen die op het eerste zicht enorm van elkaar verschillen, maar door elkaar beter te leren kennen erachter komen dat ze eigenlijk echt op elkaar lijken. Gelukkig heeft dit boek veel meer dan enkel dat. Het vertrekpunt van het verhaal is misschien niet origineel, maar zorgt er wel voor dat de lezer meteen de gevoeligheid van de personages opmerkt en de spanning die doorheen het hele verhaal rond Chase en Evie blijft hangen voelt.
Niet enkel de spanning rond de veranderende relatie tussen Chase en Evie, maar ook de andere thema’s die aan bod komen zorgen voor een soort naderend onweer dat vanaf de allereerste vonk tussen Chase en Evie zichtbaar wordt. Ondanks dat de lezer dit ziet aankomen, slaagt de auteur erin de thematiek zo diep te laten gaan waardoor het veel verder doordringt dan verwacht. Dingen zoals geweld, chantage en drugs worden niet geschuwd en maken van Niet volgens het script een verhaal met veel lagen.
Enkel het einde doet een beetje afbreuk aan dit prachtig opgebouwde en verrassende verhaal. Wanneer de dingen escaleren en de spanning naar zijn hoogtepunt wordt gedreven, laat de auteur de verhaallijnen volledig los om een einde te breien aan het verhaal dat volledig lijkt los te staan van alles wat eraan vooraf ging. Hierdoor verliest het een beetje zijn geloofwaardigheid en lijkt het een snel in elkaar geknutseld hoofdstuk te worden.
Hoewel het einde zonder twijfel sterker had gekund, blijft Niet volgens het script overeind dankzij de zware thematieken die door de auteur niet worden geschuwd en dat in combinatie met een op het eerste zicht cliché liefdesverhaal. Elke lezer die zich graag laat verrassen zal met dit boek enkele uren leesplezier beleven.

Jennifer always seems to have a way of captivating you almost immediately, this book does not fail to do so. You get pulled into the lives of Chase and Evie, who are on complete different social spectrum. Evie is the popular girl who everyone loves thanks to her boyfriend. Chase is the loner kid who doesn't talk or hang around with anyone. This book left me absolutely speechless and pondering just how i can even start to explain this book.
This book goes between Evie and Chase's point of view sharing tidbits of information that will keep you wanting to read more and more of there lives as they unfold. Watch as they start to depend on each other more and more and fall in love. This book made me laugh, cry get angry and left me feeling almost abandoned with an ending you will not expect in the least bit.. Jennifer as always you leave me wanting more and more of your writing.

O_O What. Okay, so I was fine throughout this book until I got down to the last twenty pages. And then someone threw a dagger into my heart. And just when I thought the pain couldn't get worse . . . they twisted it. And now I'm just crying my eyes out because this hurt me so badly. WHAT. WHY. I DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS. I didn't . . . . I didn't . . . I didn't want this. *sobs*

When I receive a book for review and I don’t like it, I am always a bit hesitant before writing down my thoughts for everyone to read. You see, there are books that work for many of us, books that work for some of us.. and books that simply doesn’t work for me no matter how interesting the concept might seem to be at first sight.
..This goes in the last category. *sigh*
I really wanted to like this story, I really wanted to care more for the characters and be more emotionally invested in what happened to them through the story, but for various reasons this never happened. Maybe because I read similar books before and I felt that there was nothing new to it, maybe because I prefer better developed characters, flawed but also stronger, more complex. Maybe because there was little action until the ending and by then I felt somehow exhausted, skimming through it more than reading.
Anyways... I always feel bad when I don't like a story, because books are supposed to make me feel good, or a better person, or to teach me something.. or at least to entertain me (and make me think "how silly am I for reading this?").

In de maand februari mocht ik aan nog een blogtour deelnemen voor Dutch Venture Publishing. Wederom een Young Adult boek, getiteld ‘Niet volgens het script’, geschreven door Jennifer Murgia (bekend van haar Angel Star duologie).
De manier waarop het verhaal geschreven en ingedeeld is zorgde erbij mij voor dat ik het boek vlot uit had. Toch moest ik af en toe even goed opletten vanuit welk ik-personage de hoofdstukken geschreven waren. Bij het begin van elk hoofdstuk wordt namelijk wel aangegeven of het vanuit Chase of Evie verteld wordt, maar aangezien ik nogal rap doorlas leek het alsof ik soms niet helemaal goed opgelet had aan het begin van het hoofdstuk. Ook tekstueel gezien werd dit mij af en toe even onduidelijk en kon ik niet anders dan terug bladeren. Verder is er gewoon gebruik gemaakt van fijne, soepele bewoording die toegankelijk is voor een grote doelgroep en passend is bij de personages in het verhaal.
Het gehele verhaal heeft voor mij een enorme “high school vibe” en heeft inderdaad een ‘Cruel Intensions’ kantje zoals de quote op de achterkant ook suggereert. Juist hierdoor dacht ik, past dit wel goed bij de YA doelgroep in Nederland? Ik kan daar eigenlijk niet helemaal een duidelijk antwoord op formuleren. Ik weet bijvoorbeeld hoe populair de televisieseries zoals Riverdale, 13 Reasons Why, Glee enzovoort zijn. Ook het boek van o.a. 13 Reasons Why deed het goed en zo zijn er nog veel meer. Toch denk ik persoonlijk dat jongeren die dit boek lezen zich juist daardoor minder gemakkelijk kunnen identificeren met de hoofdkarakters in het verhaal en het verhaal geen blijvende indruk achterlaat.
Af en toe vond ik het ook wat kort door de bocht hoe het verhaal verliep. Hoe de jongeren in het boek reageerde, verder gingen, behandeld werden etc. Zo werd het realisme voor mijn gevoel nog meer verzwakt en springt het er niet bovenuit qua originaliteit. Het plot en het einde hadden zeker wel verrassende elementen wat naar mijn idee het geheel weer wat versterkte.
Het was een leuk, vlot boek om te lezen maar niet eentje die ik mij over een tijd nog zal heugen. Ik raadt het boek aan voor de liefhebbers van de bovengenoemde televisieseries en daarbij passende boeken.

In het begin lijkt “Niet volgens het script” een standaard Young Adult boek te worden. Chase is een verlegen, ietwat teruggetrokken jongen die zijn leven slijt ver weg van de rest van zijn klas. Evie hoort bij het populaire kliekje als het vriendinnetje van, maar voelt zich daar eigenlijk helemaal niet happy meer. Een schoolproject koppelt de twee aan elkaar en al snel leren ze elkaar beter kennen en vertrouwen ze elkaar hun diepste geheimen toe.
Maar schijn bedriegt. Dit boek is alles behalve een Young Adult zoals er al drieduizend op mijn plank staan. Al snel neemt het plot een verrassende wending en al vrij snel is de spanning gewoon niet meer te snijden en MOET je als lezer het boek uitlezen om te weten hoe het afloopt. Wat dat betreft is “Niet volgens het script” een echte page turner die je, zelfs lang nadat het boek uit is, niet zo makkelijk meer loslaat.
En niet alleen het plot is sterk. Murgia heeft in dit boek verrassend sterke personages neergezet. Evie en Chase zijn allebei goed ontwikkeld, hebben een interessante achtergrond en zijn gelaagd. De zijkarakters zijn iets minder uitgediept, maar ook zij komen soms ineens verrassend uit de hoek. Daarnaast is ook dit boek weer heel vlot geschreven, waardoor het heerlijk snel en makkelijk wegleest.
Het is daardoor een uitermate geschikt boek om lekker op een avond, of tijdens een vakantiedag, in één ruk helemaal te lezen. Maar zorg wel dat je daarna nog wat tijd ingepland hebt staan om een beetje bij te komen, want dat ga je zeker nodig hebben!

***NON-Spoiler Review*** Let me start with saying that this book has left me completely speechless in the end, it's that good! You follow the story from both Evie's and Chase's point of view, which is great to start with, because you get to know both characters very well.
The story reveals hidden secret after secret, which puts layer on layer for both of the characters. Character development is very well done and not only for the main characters, but also for the "minor characters". The ending was what did it though, there is this huge event that happens and you feel like you have totally figured it out, feel shattered because of what hapenned and then...it seems like you were totally wrong and something completely different happened.
Jennifer Murgia definately had me with this book, wow, jus wow!

“Ja ik was zo’n stille. Zo’n jongen die de helft van de tijd achterin het lokaal zat en geen interesse leek te tonen in de les. Mensen zagen wat ze wilden zien, maar meneer Floyd? Hij keek echt. Hij wist wat het gedicht April 18th voor me betekende. Hoe die datum voor altijd als een duistere wolk boven mijn hoofd zou hangen.” -Chase-
Het verhaal is geschreven in de ‘ik’ vorm vanuit twee oogpunten namelijk die van Evie een van de populairste meisjes van school en Chase de stille, teruggetrokken, slimme en erg opzichzelfstaande jongen. Beiden dragen ze hun geheimen en demonen met zich mee en hebben ze hun pijn en verdriet nog nooit aan de buitenwereld laten zien. Op de school Whitley Prep wordt door de twee leraren Meneer Floyd en Professor Coleman een groepsproject opgestart waarbij de leerlingen de wereld en de poëzie van de Manisch-Depressieve en Suicidale schrijfster Sylvia Plath moeten verkennen. De klas wordt opgedeeld in groepjes en zo komen de, naar het lijkt, tegenpolen Evie en Chase bij elkaar in een studiegroepje. Ze leren elkaar al snel goed kennen en beginnen te beseffen dat ze heel veel op elkaar lijken. Ze kunnen het erg goed vinden met elkaar, dit volledig tegen de wil van het vriendje van Evie; Shane Withley, het neefje van de directeur en de meest populaire jongen van de school. Shane is echt een gigantische hufter die denkt dat hij het overal voor het zeggen heeft en jammer genoeg werken veel andere leerlingen daarin mee. Hij is intens gemeen en wijkt er absoluut niet voor uit om anderen verdriet te doen zolang dat maar in zijn voordeel uitpakt. Evie is hun relatie al een tijdje zat maar durft het niet uit te maken, juist doordat Shane zo’n hufter kan zijn. Ondertussen groeit haar band met Chase steeds verder en beginnen hun gevoelens voor elkaar zich meer en meer te openbaren.
“Wat ik had ontdekt over Shane Whitley was, dat als hij iemand een mes in de rug stak, diegene niet de enige was die eronder leed. Hij speelde spelletjes met mensen, zelfs met die mensen die iets voor hem zouden moeten betekenen.” – Evie-
Dit boek heeft me echt gigantisch weten te verrassen, want wat begon als een naar het leek typisch young adult cliché high school drama verhaal veranderde het al heel snel in een ijzersterk verhaal dat erg goed in elkaar zit. Ik kan niet teveel vertellen over de inhoud van het boek omdat ik dan spoilers zou geven en dat zie ik natuurlijk niet zitten. Dit boek vraagt erom gelezen te worden. Het verhaal is heerlijk vlot en beeldend geschreven en leest dan ook in een ruk uit. Het pakt je beet en laat je niet meer los, zelfs niet nadat je de laatste pagina omgeslagen hebt en het boek uit is. Het boek liet bij mij een flinke indruk achter, ik was er echt even stil van en zat W.T.F. is er net gebeurd? Het zet je echt even tot nadenken aan.
“Het punt was dat ik niet geloofde dat Shane me pijn wilde doen. Maar elke keer als ik er maar een beetje over nadacht, hoorde ik mijn vaders stem in mijn hoofd om me te waarschuwen: Als een jongen het een keer doet is het heel waarschijnlijk dat het nog eens gebeurd.” -Evie-
Dit boek is een ware aanrader voor menig Young Adult liefhebber maar ook zeker voor lezers die houden van een goed verhaal dat je aan het denken zet. Het boek leest heerlijk weg en is een echte page turner. Ik kan hem alleen maar aanraden, koop dit boek en laat het ook jou verrassen. Tip, die warme thee zou ik bij de hand houden, just in case.

Ze kunnen het erg goed vinden met elkaar, dit volledig tegen de wil van het vriendje van Evie; Shane Withley, het neefje van de directeur en de meest populaire jongen van de school. Shane is echt een gigantische hufter die denkt dat hij het overal voor het zeggen heeft en jammer genoeg werken veel andere leerlingen daarin mee. Hij is intens gemeen en wijkt er absoluut niet voor uit om anderen verdriet te doen zolang dat maar in zijn voordeel uitpakt. Evie is hun relatie al een tijdje zat maar durft het niet uit te maken, juist doordat Shane zo’n hufter kan zijn. Ondertussen groeit haar band met Chase steeds verder en beginnen hun gevoelens voor elkaar zich meer en meer te openbaren.

Dit boek heeft me echt gigantisch weten te verrassen, want wat begon als een naar het leek typisch young adult cliché high school drama verhaal veranderde het al heel snel in een ijzersterk verhaal dat erg goed in elkaar zit. Ik kan niet teveel vertellen over de inhoud van het boek omdat ik dan spoilers zou geven en dat zie ik natuurlijk niet zitten. Dit boek vraagt erom gelezen te worden. Het verhaal is heerlijk vlot en beeldend geschreven en leest dan ook in een ruk uit. Het pakt je beet en laat je niet meer los, zelfs niet nadat je de laatste pagina omgeslagen hebt en het boek uit is. Het boek liet bij mij een flinke indruk achter, ik was er echt even stil van en zat W.T.F. is er net gebeurd? Het zet je echt even tot nadenken aan.

Het boek leest heerlijk weg en is een echte page turner. Ik kan hem alleen maar aanraden, koop dit boek en laat het ook jou verrassen. Tip, die warme thee zou ik bij de hand houden, just in case.

If you are like me, then contemporaries are my go to summer. And Between These Lines is perfect for a quick and surprising but totally entralling romance. But it was totally different than I first thought it would be. I thought it would be this easy breezy book but there was much more meat on its bones than just a fun beach read. I loved it so much! You can't help but fall in love with the characters and root for them the whole time. And the alternating point of view from chapter to chapter is a stylistic favorite of mine. I love getting to know the main guy and main girl this way. Plus I like the inside peek into a guys point of view in contemporary romances especially.
Chase starts out the story, which makes me feel like he was the true main characters and I have to say that I enjoyed it was the guy and not the girl. Typically the girl in the story takes center stage, and in between these lines both Chase and Evie are prominently featured but I still felt like it was a little bit more about Chase's story, and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
I liked Evie a lot but Chase just melted my heart. I just really connected with him. I wanted to just walk up to him and hug him half of the time. Sometimes to try and cheer him up and sometimes just because he was way too adorable. Evie was pretty cute too. Her boyfriend really bugged me and so did her friend, Tara.
I thought that Between These Lines was going to a light and easy romance, but it is darker and more complicated than that. Chase and Evie both have so much going on in their lives. They have both been called "damaged" for one reason or another. Chase lost his parents in a horrible accident and Evie's parent's marriage is falling apart and she is left to fend for herself. It was sad to think about these two great teens having to go through all of that on their own. Which is why I liked them so much for each other. They were able to bring each other out of their funks.
Between These Lines is beautifully written. You can't help but to get sucked into the world of Whitley prep with its secrets and manipulation and Shane. (ugh I hate Shane!!) The ending completely took me by surprise too, which is not all that easy to do. Jennifer Murgia is a really fantastic job with Between These Lines and I think you need to go out and read it right now!

Wow. I'm speechless. Oh, my goodness. What an ending! Whew, let me gather my thoughts and try to get them out here. Wow. I was totally pulled into Between These Lines to the point where I was annoyed that things in my real life took me away from it. I just wanted to stay with these sweet, damaged people, Chase and Evie, to give them hugs and support as they dealt with their own problems.
Poor, deliciously disturbed Chase spends his entire life hiding from his painful past by keeping his head down and trying to go unnoticed. His parents died in a horrible accident when he was younger leaving him with scars both mental and physical. Beautiful and popular Evie is keeping her own secrets hidden while putting on a brave face for the world. Her home life is a mess and her "perfect" boyfriend, Shane, is not as wonderful as everyone thinks. He's actually quite cruel and lately he's been getting worse.
When Evie and Chase are forced to work together on a school project they discover that they have a lot in common and an intense attraction quickly forms between them. They find that they are able to fill the emptiness in each others hearts and heal each other's emotional pain. Unfortunately, life is complicated and at the moment Evie still has a boyfriend who honestly frightens her most of the time. Every plot point had purpose and was dealt with carefully, from Evie's parents' crumbling marriage to Chase's ultimate revelation.
A fast read but full of deep conflict, this book would easily be enjoyed by a teen or adult reader. Murgia does a fantastic job of keeping you connected to the young lovers and rooting for love to conquer the halls of Whitley Prep School. With picturesque scenery from the movie Cruel Intentions flashing in my head I zoomed through to the ending that I was completely shocked by and was left feeling yet another stomach-dropping-wind-in-the-hair loop from the emotional roller coaster that was Between These Lines.

Niet volgens het script is een contemporary High School verhaal, met een spannend kantje. We maken kennis met Evie en Chase, elk gepaard met hun eigen persoonlijke bagage. Het concept van dit boek is niet geheel origineel (high-school: populair vs niet-populair) maar toch geeft Jennifer er haar eigen twist aan door belangrijke thema’s aan bod te halen zoals onder andere grensoverschrijdend gedrag. Alhoewel het plot voor mij anders had gemogen of tot zelfs ongeloofwaardig overkwam, vind ik wel dat Jennifer, over het algemeen, een meeslepend YA-boek heeft neergezet.

Between These Lines is an astounding story, told from alternating perspectives, about two people finding not only their true selves, but each other. Filled with heart-racing tension, this unique story left me breathless and craving more! It is Cruel Intensions meets Perfect Chemistry. I will be thinking about these characters for days to come.

Het was erg leuk. Ik luisterde het als een luisterboek en telkens wilde ik door luisteren. Het einde was een beetje onduidelijk wat wel jammer was.

De proloog geeft je een kleine blik in de toekomst, die mij benieuwd maakte naar wat er gebeurd was. Jennifer Murgia wist mij vanaf het eerste begin te verrassen. Ik had een bepaald beeld van de personages door de proloog en het begin van het eerste hoofdstuk, maar na enkele pagina's merkte ik dat dit beeld niet klopte, het verhaal was niet zo voorspelbaar dan ik in eerste instantie dacht en ik was hierdoor aangenaam verrast.
De tegenstelling tussen de leerlingen op school wordt goed beschreven. De 'populaire' groep behandelt Chase alsof hij minderwaardig is, vooral Shane, het vriendje van Evie en de leider van de groep. Ik vond Shane goed beschreven, hij is een rijke en populaire jongen, maar heeft een onsympathiek karakter. Hij kijkt neer op anderen die niet aan zijn maatstaven voldoen en dat laat hij ook duidelijk merken.
"Maar Shane kreeg het altijd voor elkaar om mensen dingen tegen hun zin in te laten doen. Hij kreeg het altijd voor elkaar om mensen te laten praten, ook al hadden ze gezworen dat niet te doen." (Pagina 47).
Je leert de twee hoofdpersonages van het verhaal, Chase en Evie, goed kennen. De karakters zijn uitgebreid beschreven en je leert wat hen bezig houdt in het leven. Chase is een sympathieke jongen die zijn eigen gang gaat en zich niets probeert aan te trekken van anderen. Hij is tot over z'n oren verliefd op de onbereikbare Evie. Evie is een lief meisje, dat zich helaas teveel laat beïnvloeden door anderen en haar angst om tegen de groep waartoe zij behoort in te gaan en maakt daardoor verkeerde keuzes. Ik had haar het liefst door elkaar geschud en haar gezegd dat ze voor zichzelf moet kiezen en niet haar leven moet laten leiden door anderen, ongeacht de gevolgen.
Als Chase en Evie elkaar beter leren kennen, blijkt dat ze vergelijkbare problemen hebben. Ze groeien steeds verder naar elkaar toe, ze begrijpen elkaar en ze beginnen gevoelens voor elkaar te krijgen. Shane komt hier achter en het loopt uit op een confrontatie tussen Shane en Chase. Chase besluit echter om niet het spelletje mee te spelen dat Shane in gedachten heeft. Dit heeft echter enorme consequenties voor zowel Chase als Evie.
Niet volgens het script is een erg goed verhaal dat serieuze zaken bespreekt. Het is niet allemaal rozengeur en maneschijn, Jennifer Murgia laat zien hoe hard leerlingen tegen elkaar kunnen zijn op school en dat ingaan tegen leerlingen die de macht hebben op school serieuze consequenties kan hebben. Maar de schrijfster laat ook zien hoe hard het dagelijks leven van tieners kan zijn buiten het schoolleven. Daarnaast spelen ook liefde en verliefd zijn/worden spelen een belangrijke rol in het verhaal, het verhaal heeft een paar mooie, ontroerende en tedere momenten, waarbij ik tijdens het lezen een glimlach op m’n gezicht had. Tegen het einde loopt de spanning bijna ondraaglijk op en je wilt weten hoe het gaat aflopen tussen Shane, Chase en Evie. En wat een ongelofelijk einde heeft het verhaal uiteindelijk! Ik was compleet verrast, dit had ik niet zien aankomen!
Ik vind Niet volgens het script een absolute aanrader, een boek dat vooral leerlingen van het middelbaar onderwijs zouden moeten lezen vanwege de thema's die behandeld worden. As most people know, I'm not a huge contemporary reader though I've been doing more of it as of late. So when I was asked to read this, I certainly had to give it a try and see what was in store. And I'm so glad I did!

I have to say that I enjoyed this story so very much. I love the sweet romance that happened, how it blossomed into something so easily and fluidly.
Chase is just such a great character. His voice is so genuine. I love how he's a bit introverted, at least to outsiders. But once you get in his head and learn about him, you totally understand who he is. He's reserved, yet he has so much going on in his yet when you read his chapters. He's a fairly tortured soul with a past that he wants to leave behind but that haunts him.
Evie has this outward persona to live up to. She is part of that elite crowd that you hear about in high-schools. The one that everyone watches and waits to see what they will do before following like a flock of sheep. But she longs to be different.
When these two are thrown together through an assignment, things start to heat up. There's an underlying attraction that Evie has and that Chase is not quite sure what to do with. Yet, he's drawn to her. I loved watching their relationship blossom. It was truly a friendship that turned into more. And their story was a roller coaster ride, filled with ups and downs and twists and turns. And in the end it is very Romeo and Juliet in nature!
Murgia has a great voice for both her characters. Her writing is easy to read and flows well off the page. There's no hang ups with info dump or tons of telling rather than showing. I raced through this story in only a day! Her writing makes this read fast paced and intense. And if you're looking for a surprise ending then this is your read.
Overall I am so happy I read this book and got a taste of contemporary from Murgia's POV. It really shows me how great a wonderfully contemporary novel can be!

Chase is just such a great character. His voice is so genuine. I love how he's a bit introverted, at least to outsiders. But once you get in his head and learn about him, you totally understand who he is. He's reserved, yet he has so much going on in his yet when you read his chapters. He's a fairly tortured soul with a past that he wants to leave behind but that haunts him.
Evie has this outward persona to live up to. She is part of that elite crowd that you hear about in high-schools. The one that everyone watches and waits to see what they will do before following like a flock of sheep. But she longs to be different.
When these two are thrown together through an assignment, things start to heat up. There's an underlying attraction that Evie has and that Chase is not quite sure what to do with. Yet, he's drawn to her. I loved watching their relationship blossom. It was truly a friendship that turned into more. And their story was a roller coaster ride, filled with ups and downs and twists and turns. And in the end it is very Romeo and Juliet in nature!
Murgia has a great voice for both her characters. Her writing is easy to read and flows well off the page. There's no hang ups with info dump or tons of telling rather than showing. I raced through this story in only a day! Her writing makes this read fast paced and intense. And if you're looking for a surprise ending then this is your read.
Overall I am so happy I read this book and got a taste of contemporary from Murgia's POV. It really shows me how great a wonderfully contemporary novel can be!

Talk about short, fast-paced, intense reads! In Between These Lines, Jennifer Murgia has built an engaging contemporary world and web of secrets that will suck readers in.
Between These Lines is the story of how Chase Mitman and Evie Cunningham finally wind up in close quarters and face their feelings for each other, but it's so much more complicated than two people with a crush. Both of them are haunted -- Chase by the past and Evie by her own fear of the present.
Evie's parents relationship is disintegrating before her eyes. She has a privileged, controlling boyfriend with a violent streak named Shane who'll do anything to keep her. Chase and Shane have their own past that resurfaces after being buried for years. And then there are the secrets... Whitley Prep is full of secrets and everyone in the story is connected, intertwined, and Murgia does a fabulous job on holding back details on exactly how everything seams up.
I think what I loved most about this novel is that you don't have to work for it while reading. It's beautifully plotted and unfurls like a carpet before you. All you have to do is follow along. It was a nice change from twisting fiction that you have to follow closely and sometimes wind up wondering what happened after 500 pages.
My only complaint is that I didn't ever truly relate to Evie. There were moments in which I felt connected to her, but she just felt a little too soft and distant. Chase, Shane, Tara (Evie's best friend) and even some of the secondary characters were very crisp and I could watch their actions play out in my mind.
Despite not relating to Evie very well, her encounters with Chase rang very true. Many of them were subtle and didn't coerce me as a reader to read something specific into their exchanges. The emotion or sentiment was just there.
I can't tell you much more because you'll want to read the end on your own. Oh my, the end! Tension mounts, relationships come to a head and you'll be rushing to the end. Good thing it's an e-book, otherwise it could have easily ended up tear-stained and torn from the speed at which I was turning pages.
