Desperate Shadows
Early in the book, Mort and Emily are arrested and sent to an extremely depressing prison. At the same time, many of Brockton's secrets start to unravel. The entire town begins to change, and an invisible divison is created, forming two groups: the loyalists (those who believe in Brockton's long-time corrupt values), and the insurgents (those who stand against the illegal intolerance).
