This best selling, off-beat travel guide to Oregon specializes in those out of the way places that ordinary guidebooks never mention. Regions of the state are broken down into tours, with detailed information on each, including directions and mileage. A definitive roadside travel guide to Oregon.
A little dense, definitely designed for the traveller who wants to see all of oregon, doesn't mind wasting gas, and enjoys tiny back road towns. However, the author's voice adds a level of levity and also social commentary that I wouldn't expect from a book from 1965.
A great book with information and all sorts of assorted facts about all the different areas of Oregon. I'm re-reading the part of this book about eastern Oregon because we just got back from a camping trip there. We visited the John Day Fossil beds and the Fossil - Mitchell - Clarno - Shaniko - Antelope - Mt Vernon area. Beautiful high desert and mountains! A fact that I learned from this book is that the local people in the Clarno area discourage visitors from exploring the hills because they are "infested with rattlers". Of course, that's exactly what we did the last day there while looking for fossils, not having read this book first!
Make no mistake. The book that I read - from 1976- is dated. But that did not detract from my enjoyment and my realization that most of the book is still as accurate today as it was when it was written. This book is intended, I believe, for someone who would want to travel all over Oregon, nooks and crannies and all. And while doing so, that someone would want to know all about each area. It is a great reference book. Not sure if it is still in publication, or there are later editions.
