Miranda Woodruff has it all. At least, that's how it looks when she's starring in her homebuilding television show, From the Ground Up. So when her network begins to talk about making cuts, she'll do anything to boost ratings and save her show--even if it means pretending to be married to a man who's definitely not the fiance who ran out on her three years ago. When a handsome reporter starts shadowing Miranda's every move, all his digging into her personal life brings him a little too close to the truth--and to her. Can the girl whose entire identity is wrapped up in her on-screen persona finally find the nerve to set the record straight? And if she does, will the life she's built come crashing down just as she's found a love to last?"Sweet, fun, and faith-filled, Melissa Tagg's Made To Last is a story made to delight lovers of romance and behind-the-scenes reality TV.  Pull up an armchair and enjoy!"--Lisa Wingate, National Bestselling Author of Blue Moon Bay, one of Booklist's Top 10 of 2012"Clever plot. Miranda Woodruff is the star of a television program, “From the Ground Up”. Apparently, she has everything: a happy, successful life, a loving husband and a brilliant future ahead of her. But all that glitters is not gold. Three years ago her fiancé left her with a simple note and, despite her career, since that moment Miranda’s life has been empty and sad because she has not been able to move on after a bitter disappointment like that. Now, she must be strong because her show needs to be saved and her producer decides that, to boost the ratings, it is the right time to introduce to the world her husband! How can she do that since she has been living a fake marriage? Simple question. The only way is to hire a fake husband! Things seem to proceed smoothly enough, until a reporter arrives in town...

Do not let the description of this book stop you from reading it. This is not at all a shallow, cheesy novel about a girl who falls in love for her fake husband. This is a story about a woman who finds herself trapped because of her lies and cannot see what truly matters in her life. The first thing Miranda needs to understand is that God never abandons His children and only by trusting Him, she can be happy and free herself from all the fears and insecurities that have stopped her life. Failure cannot define her and, most of all, cannot be an excuse to avoid a new love.

I loved reading Melissa Tagg’s first book! Especially, I loved the way I felt while reading it. I had this goofy grin on my face every time I picked it up. The story flows well and it is sweet, romantic and deep. Funny moments and serious ones are mixed in a perfect outcome and I liked the author’s writing style: clear and fun but also able to deal with delicate situations.

I cannot choose a favourite character because I really loved them all, but as for a favourite moment, each scene that involves Matthew (the reporter) and the kids is lovely. Both the parts with his niece and the moments with the other children are very sweet and tender. I would say that those are the best and most touching scenes.

Get ready for an emotional journey that will make you smile, cry and will give your heart hope and happiness. “Made to Last” is a delightful book you will surely love. I highly recommend it!

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.

2023 reread.

This book is still so good. Yes, the romance is a bit cheesy, but I love how Marianda chooses to do what is right in the end, even though it will hurt her. It was nice to revisit a book and find it as good as you remember.

If you've every seen the classic movie, Christmas in Connecticut, this book has the same feeling, only with a much better ending.
****
I was expecting a light, kinda dumb read. Now I am sitting here in shock and wish I could give Melissa Tagg a hug. How did she turn a worn-out plot (girl trying to save her career by pretending to be married) into a story that felt fresh and was rich with lessons and meaning.

So many people, girls especially, need to read this book, because while they are being entertained with a wonderfully written story, they will also be soaking up a message (even though they won't realize it at first) that they need to hear: You identity is completed in Christ. You don't need a guy, a job, or an education to complete you. You are a whole person, you simply have to abide in Christ and let the truth set you free.

I cannot wait to read the next Tagg novel!

A must for fans of contemporary romantic comedy!

Made to Last stars Randi, the tomboy host of a home renovation TV show, who's trying her best to save her show while keeping a big (and ever growing) secret from America. Enter a good-hearted reporter, a funny fake husband, and an ex-fiance who all make the show saving and the secret keeping trickier. I so enjoyed living vicariously through Randi as she juggled three eligible bachelors throughout this lighthearted romance. I smiled all the way through.

Melissa's endearing characters charmed me and their storyline captured my imagination. Reading Made To Last was like eating a hot fudge brownie sundae with girlfriends. Fun. Delicious. Completely entertaining. Congratulations on your debut, Melissa!

WARNING-I'm about to gush! First off let me say that this book had some very high expectations to meet! It started with finding the author's blog and loving her style and humor, then came the cover and book synopsis which looked and sounded so good, followed by reading an excerpt that I loved, and finally just as I was about to start reading I noticed that my favorite author has written a rave endorsement. So with expectations unrealistically high I dove in, and fell in love. Honestly I don't think this book could be any better than it was! I enjoyed every single moment and finished the book with a big smile on my face that I couldn't seem to get rid of.
The plot was brilliant; a television star with a "secret husband" who doesn't exist, pretends to be married to a man her producer hires, and ends up falling in love with the reporter who is writing about her. When I first heard about the book I thought Randi would fall for the guy she was pretending to be married to (which to be honest is a bit cliche) but having her fall for the reporter was such a better story!
And now for the characters. Randi was awesome. You could really feel her emotions from the pain of being abandoned by so many to her heart for helping those in need. I loved her slightly tomboy personality while still being a girl. Matthew was the perfect match for Randi. He quickly saw through to her real self and didn't exploit that. And his relationship with his deaf niece made my heart melt! And Blake "Blaze" was such a great character! His klutzy blunders and general humorous self had me laughing more times then I can count!
One of the other things that I loved about this book was all the little references to classic movies. Especially how the author used them to create analogies rather than using old cliches.
I could go on about this book for days (and I have, just ask my sisters!) I loved it so so much! I honestly cannot wait till next May when Here to Stay comes out!

I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I have to admit – I was totally surprised by Made to Last, a debut novel for Melissa Tagg. First off, reading the synopsis left me wondering how I could like Randi, a woman that is hiding so many things and lying to the very people that help her keep her livelihood going. Secondly, I thought this would be extremely light-hearted (and by that I mean “cheesy”), and while there are many light-hearted moments, there were some weighty themes touched on in this novel.

Randi’s world revolves around her show “From the Ground Up.” So much so that she is willing to keep up the façade of being married to the fiancé that left her three years before. When the mystery husband needs to make an appearance for the sake of keeping the show, she allows herself to be pressured into hiring a pretend husband. Sounds crazy, right? Well, it is, but it completely worked for me! Randi is a character with a past – she made mistakes that real people make. Even though I thought at first that the story sounded a bit crazy, by the time I got to know Randi, I really came to understand why she felt the need to do what she did. I didn’t support it, but I could definitely understand it.

I thought the plot was very unique. Tagg took was could have been a cliché and turned it on its head. Girl doesn’t fall for pretend husband – girl falls for scoping reporter, Matthew, who has a story as compelling as Randi's. Honestly, in the beginning, I was looking for the cliché – I liked the fake husband, Blaze! But by the end of the story I was rooting for Randi and Matthew wholeheartedly (although I can’t help but hope that Blaze shows up in a future book. Please, Melissa, please??).

I admit that at times I’ve allowed my identity be wrapped up in so many different things and felt pressured to conform to that identity. Randi’s struggle to hold on to what she thought was her identity and her value – her success with the show – was so relatable. She didn’t see her value as a person and certainly not as a child of God, and her journey to get back to her faith was a joy to read. God can take our brokenness and mistakes from the past and still create something beautiful from them. We just have to let go and do our part. And yes, there were some very charming, but not-at-all-cheesy, moments.

Though the story line wasn’t my favorite at first, I was quickly won over by the characters, the uniqueness of the plot and the realistic yet charming nature of the journey. I was happily caught off guard with every plot-twist. Melissa comes across as a seasoned author, and I am excited to get my hands on her next novel.

Thank you to Melissa Tagg & Bethany House for a complimentary copy of Made to Last. This review is my honest opinion.

Review on my blog (to be posted 10/9): http://christianbookshelfreviews.blog...

Let me start by saying that contemporary romance is not one of my favorite genres, but after reading a few good ones this year, I've wanted to branch out and read more of the genre. I'm so glad I did as Made To Last is another winner and I absolutely loved it!

There's just so much about Made To Last I loved. The characters were fantastic! Not only did I love the main two (Miranda & Matthew), but Blaze was another great character and my favorite from Made To Last - cannot wait to read his book!

The story was very interesting and well written - I can't believe Made To Last is the author's debut novel! I loved the whole T.V. show/fake husband aspect and how the story showed how lies can drag a person down.

There are lots of other things I loved about Made To Last, but suffice it to say, this book made my favorites' shelf and I definitely recommend it!

*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author for my honest review as a part of her Tagg Team. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

Can one pull off pretending to be married? Because that’s what Miranda “Randi” did in “Made to Last”…and you’re going to have to read the novel to see how it worked out for her. *wink*

Sprinkled with LOL moments and serious, come-to-Jesus meetings, “Made to Last” will definitely do just that on my keeper shelf. Can I just make a confession? Blaze was my favorite character. I know, I know, why love the fake husband, right?? Read far enough into the book and I bet you’ll agree with me. He made me laugh more times than not and had such a loveable personality about him. There wasn’t anything self serving in the guy and I can’t wait to find out his story next year!

Randi has got quite the story to tell and the book certainly is not without its share of conflict. Sometimes the lie you’ve been living just becomes the reality and when the lie threatens to take away everything you’ve worked so hard for, the house of cards only flutters faster. To watch Randi scramble to keep her façade in place was at times, comical, but more often than not a growing experience and chances for new and different choices. She never once became unlikeable to me…an important fact when you have a deceitful main character. But she’s changing and growing…and it was so much fun to watch her fall in love.

Thoroughly entertaining. Deeper than “just” a romantic comedy. A tale worthy of the telling!

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the author for my copy to review.

Okay, I'll admit it... I'm impressed. When I got this book, I was actually pretty doubtful that I would enjoy it. My primary thought was that this book would help me complete my New Authors challenge. That was pretty much all I really hoped for. But I ended up really truly enjoying this story and the way the author told it. Every time I had to put the book down, I couldn't wait to pick it up again! I'm happy that (thanks to my Goodreads friends) I disovered this author!
Now I can't wait to read more about Blake/Blaze (my favorite character) in Melissa Tagg's next book Here to Stay!

Miranda who is on a hugely popular home improvement show (the kind of show I would watch in real life) and for the past three years she has been lying to her viewers. Now that the show might be cancelled she and her handlers hire a man to pretend to be her loving husband. What makes this even more difficult is she also has a reporter shadowing her every move. She has to watch what she says and does all the while fighting the unexpected attraction she has for him.

I so much wanted to love this book. I mean the concept sounds like something I would have fallen in love with. I just had a problem with the book holding my interest. I mean it was so bad my husband noticed I wasn’t reading and asked me why I was reading a book I didn’t seem to be enjoying.

There were several things that didn’t set well with me. One of them was all the lies. I just got tired of everyone lying about something. My other issue is that Miranda couldn’t seem to get over her ex. It has been three years since he decided not to marry her and she was still carrying a torch for him. That seems a bit extreme.

Maybe I just wasn’t the right reader for this book. I do think that there is a good message under it all and I really hope the right readers will take a chance on it and see that for themselves.

Well between feeling sick on the first week of Autumn, plus waiting for another book in the mail... this novel came in with perfect timing!

LOVED the flawed characters.
Thoroughly enjoyed Melissa's humorous writing which was perfectly laced with love, regret, faults, God's grace, and serious risk!

Here, Randi--or Miranda, battles her true identity and gets sucked into to living a complete lie all for the sack of her fame. But when more lies sneak up on her and her heart gets in the way, can she give it all up and let the truth finally come out? Or, is it better to just live out the lie and see where everything falls?

I can't believe I haven't read anything by this great author before? I mean seriously. She is amazing.

'Nuff said.

The writing style was mostly flawless and flowed well. There were a couple spots where I had to go back an reread to understand what happened, such as the scene about Robbie and her mom, but I enjoyed the author's voice and storytelling ability.
It would be a full four stars except for my personal preference of historicals for reading material...but I'll likely be reading more of hers, especially the sequel of Blaze's story.

When her homebuilding show is on the brink of being shut down, Miranda “Randi” Woodruff rents a husband to jazz up viewer ratings. What she didn’t count on was a handsome reporter snooping around, trying to dig up her secrets. Little does she know, reporter Matthew Knox has some buried secrets of his own. Will Miranda evade Matthew’s journalistic curiosity long enough to save her television show? Or will she cave under the pressure? Will Matthew’s secrets push him past the point of no return, where his conscience is concerned? Or will he gladly toss aside his personal ethics to get the scoop on Randi Woodruff and catapult himself to new career heights?

Made to Last is the debut book of author Melissa Tagg. I must say I was surprised by this lighthearted romance. It dug into deep topics, challenging me as a reader and a writer. As a reader, the theme of identity made me stop and consider who I am. Am I defined by my career choices, marital status, and cleanliness of my home? Or is my identity found elsewhere? The answer I found is this: I am a daughter of God. All other identities (writer, tutor, daughter, sister, friend, etc.) fall into place, secondary to my place as a child of God.

The surprises Miranda and Matthew faced as the chapters went along kept me off balance and turning pages. It challenged the writer in me to consider every possible plot twist for my work-in-progress (WIP). I especially enjoy novels that catch me off guard, as Made to Last did. They usually nudge me deeper in my own writing process. There’s nothing quite like reading a fellow author’s work to push my own writing skills to a new level.

One of my favorite lines from the book is at the tail end of a discussion between Miranda and her TV show’s producer, Lincoln Nash.

Miranda: "I don't have a husband."
Lincoln: "So we get you one."

This simple exchange promised quirky, awkward moments for Randi Woodruff, and Melissa Tagg delivered! I loved the storyline and how the three different men in Miranda’s life played so well off of each other. One scene built upon another until I was holding the book mere inches from my face in eager anticipation of what would occur next. This book is an easy read that is sure to keep you entertained and yearning for more.

Look out, world! Melissa Tagg has arrived!

Have you ever assumed something and it ends up being a lie? That's what happened to Miranda when she assumes she'll be marrying her fiance and uses that knowledge to land herself a job on a homebuilding TV show. Who would've guessed that he would run and leave her days before the wedding? But her mystery husband is very popular with the viewers and when the show finds itself in trouble, the producers decided to find a "husband" for her to drum up some publicity. Add a good-looking, if nosy, reporter and a reappearance by a former fiance, and you're looking at a recipe for disaster---and laughs.

Although Randi has been living a lie, I did like her. She's a very driver and hardworking woman and hasn't landed where she's at by chance. I love that she has that tough side, yet she strips it off on occasion and lets her soft side shine through. Just like anyone else, she's gone through some hard times, rejection, and pain and has found a way to cope. Her mask is thick and strong and it was fun to watch it get chipped away.

As for the men...there is a definite attraction between her and Matthew, the reporter, but he thinks she's married to the man hired to play her husband. It was almost uncomfortable to watch them both deny those feelings because of this fake marriage. The "husband" is hilarious! I love the way he and Miranda tolerate and look out for one another. The ex has his reasons for leaving, but I can't believe he had the nerve to come back!

I was very curious how this would all work out and was entertained in the process. There are religious themes lightly sprinkled throughout, as well as humor, tender moments, and fun.

Content: no language; very mild violence (minor accidents); mild romance (kissing, implied living together with no details); mild religious elements. Clean!

This was just ok for me...(probably between a 2.5-3 star rating) which bums me out, because I had pretty high expectations coming into the book, due to recommendations as well as the ratings. I just never hit an "I can't put this book down!!" moment (which is probably why it took me longer than normal to finish it...and that's with skimming). I think the romance aspect was lacking (but there were a few good lovey moments/kisses)...and I think it was because 2/3 of the book, Matthew thinks Miranda is married. So while he is attracted to her, he doesn't act on it. And therein lies my biggest problem with the book. I know she was just pretending, but as far as Matthew knew, she was married. And he kept mentally reminding himself of that. But, it still bugged me for some reason that he was essentially letting himself fall for a married woman. So, while the premise was original (since usually "pretending to be married" love stories are usually between the couple that is actually pretending), I didn't love this book. I wish he had just found out right away then figured out how to write his blog without outing her secret...or something. I just think it took too long for the truth to come out, which meant it took too long for the love story to progress, in my opinion. I enjoyed the author's writing style, and it contained some witty dialogue...but this just wasn't a favorite for me.
This book would definitely be for fans of Christian romance as the Christian aspects are pretty heavy in this book.

This was my first foray into Melissa Tagg’s writing and it was quite enjoyable. I enjoyed the twist on fake dating (or, marriage) but where the other MMC wasn’t the one in the fake relationship.

It’s a good book about finding one’s identity. There was a lot of light-heartedness as well as truly difficult scenes.

Miranda has a past she feels guilt and shame over, she doesn’t understand God’s grace, and she has her hurdles to overcome.

I would say the Christian theme is very present in this book, but not necessarily as deep as I personally prefer. It’s being nit-picky, but the pastor using Scripture in his sermon would have been nice.

All in all, this was the perfect light read I was looking for with super interesting characters (I now have to read Blaze’s book!).

Miranda Woodruff – known as “Randi” to friends, has just taken “complicated” to whole new level. Three years ago, she began her own homebuilding show with more than ratings on the line, she also had the love of a good man named Robbie and her love for him bubbled over into her early first season tapings when she claimed him as her husband rather than labeling him as the fiancé he was. After things fell apart, including a wedding that never came to be, fledging ratings are plaguing the show during the taping of her fourth season of From the Ground Up, leaving Miranda scrambling for a husband and some good PR. To make matters more complex, reporter Matthew Knox has been assigned to shadow Miranda and chronicle her life – as a TV celebrity whose private life has been secreted away, more than one celebrity tabloid is curious to catch glimpses of Miranda’s private life, and Matthew is just the guy to get the scoop.

If only one thing could be said about Melissa Tagg’s debut, it’d be that it’s unique. Fortunately, I don’t have to hold myself to a limit and can instead explore the sparkling chemistry and wit that is Made to Last. From the various reviews that cropped up on my dashboard written by fellow reviewers, one thing that left me skeptical was how the three men in Miranda’s life and their relationship with her would play out. There are usually enough mishaps in rom-coms with one hero, I couldn’t imagine what would happen when you plopped a plucky heroine in the middle of three (uh-hum, hunky) heroes, all of whom (well… with exception to perhaps one) could have won Miranda’s heart to readers satisfaction. It’s that much harder when we fall for more than one guy yet to her credit, Melissa never toys with our emotions we “know” early on who will be doing the breath-catching and who won’t get the girl.

Though it may be labeled a “debut,” this is anything but. Made to Last offers its readers not just a lasting impression (the kind that leaves anyone with a goofy grin and a happy heart) but also one of grace even in the face of dishonesty. All of the characters were hurting in some way – from a broken heart to broken families, no one is untouched by mistakes and a past that has crippled them if not physically then certainly emotionally. Matthew is probably one of the most memorable contemporary heroes I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. He’s not just heart-stoppingly protective of Miranda (protecting someone isn’t always an act of physical stalwart) a trait that also means he’s a person of honor, he’s also wonderful in his role of “uncle” to the young Cee – reading through his scenes with her is like getting to know Matthew in deeper, more meaningful way. Miranda’s own life was an interesting puzzle. Not because we didn’t know where her lying stemmed from, more that it was a joy to watch her finally realize she could release herself from this pain and finally to rediscover God. Her ways of “dealing” and trying to control situations was really suffocating Miranda both as a person who valued privacy and as a public figure. It took love to help her see that.

Sparkling characters, smart dialogue and a story line that wraps itself around your heart, Made to Last is a timeless novel. Melissa digs deeper than the average contemporary novel usually would and we are wrapped into a warm cocoon of happiness. Any contemporary genre fan will be hard-pressed not to fall under the spell of this charmer. It doesn’t just remind us of the importance of facing our mistakes and learning to be ourselves, there is also a subtle, beautiful message of faith. At the heart, through Miranda and Matthew, this novel teaches us what it means to be happy - what it means to "be" home and realize home is where the heart is.

Miranda Woodruff will do anything to keep her home-building show, From the Ground Up, on the air. Even introduce her husband to her viewers. There's just one problem. The "husband" she's supposed to be married to doesn't exist. When her producers come up with the idea to hire a man to play the part of her husband. So now Miranda's closely guarded private life is about to become very public. Reporter Matthew Knox is desperate for a breakout story that will save his career. When he's offered the chance to blog about the very private Miranda Woodruff, he jumps at the chance to find out what makes this intriguing woman tick. Plus it's a huge financial breakthrough that will help to pay for an important surgery for his young niece. Sparks fly between Matthew and Miranda from the moment they meet. But with her supposedly married, nothing can come of it, right? But when the truth comes out, will Matthew and Miranda escape with their hearts intact or not?

I was thrilled to be a part of the author's Tagg Team for this book. Early reviews I kept seeing on Facebook and Twitter kept praising this book. I knew I was going to have to move it up in my reading pile sooner rather than later. As I started reading, I could tell that the early praise didn't disappoint. I was laughing by the end of the first chapter and then kept giggling through out the rest of the story. I loved seeing how both Matthew and Miranda would deny their attraction for one another because after all, she was married. This has quickly become one of my favorite romantic comedies and I'm looking forward to the next book. I'm hoping it will be about the delightful Blaze! This is a debut author who has fast become a favorite!

I received this book for free from the author for the purpose of promoting and reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am so delighted to have discovered a new fave author….Melissa Tagg!!!
I first “got to know” Melissa through her YouTube videos “Welcome Mat Wednesday”… she just has a bubbly personality and when I heard that she was releasing a book I knew I had to check it out! And let me just say…Melissa’s book has far exceeded all my expectations!
Let me tell ya what I love…
#1 MIRANDA WOODRUFF- I love her tough exterior but inner softness…she is very guarded after being burned by love. Though she has been “unlucky in love”, she has found major success on her woodworking/home-repair show. Miranda is put between a rock and a hard place in an effort to save the ratings and keep everyone on their jobs.
#2 THAT HANDSOME REPORTER- Matthew has his own agenda with Miranda to help further his own career….exploit her! Even though tabloid reporters have a bad rep, the author does a good job of keeping a fine balance with this character and keeping me liking him in spite of it all!!!
#3 ONE FAKE HUBBY…PLEASE- I love Blaze (Miranda’s fake TV hubby)! Even though he and Miranda are putting on a major charade for reporter Matthew Knox, I love him! I love his laid back easy going attitude and I loved that he really wanted to help Miranda!
#4 THE LIE FACTOR- I know that some other reviewers had a problem with the whole “lie factor”….ie the main character is portraying herself as something she is not…even though her intentions are totally unselfish, she is still lying- a lot! But I did not see this as off putting at all. I love Miranda and I see her heart throughout the story and I know that we all make stupid choices every now and then. This made for a very unique, very interesting story with a not so typical main character and I love her!

I am so excited about this new author and cannot wait to see what the future holds for her!!!

Melissa Tagg has his the nail on the head with her debut novel, Made to Last. It has the perfect blend of romance and conflict that will keep you turning pages until the final happily ever after. No, I don't feel that I am spoiling things by saying that this is a happily ever after story. It's Christian romantic fiction! I would be very unhappy if there wasn't that sweet resolution that left me smiling at the end of the book. What is most exciting about this story is that it is the first published book from this author.

Miranda Woodruff is a home improvement TV celebrity. But she is living with a big secret. The husband that she continually talks about on her program...nope he doesn't exist. And so we begin the journey through the book as Miranda wades through the repercussions of lying to her viewers for the past few years.

Matthew Knox is the reporter assigned to follow Miranda for a few weeks and blog about her life in an attempt to raise the ratings of the show. Will he figure out Miranda's secret? Will Miranda be able to convince Matthew that she is a happily married woman? Will Melissa Tagg write an incredible first kiss scene? I can answer that last question for you and say that it was indeed great. I was also intrigued by the hints at the story behind Jase, Izzy and Cee. I would love to read their full story!

All in all, I have to say that this is a very solid debut novel and I look forward to reading more by Melissa Tagg.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.

Romance at its best! Sheesh!! And I'm a historical romance fiction junkie, but Melissa Tagg captured the spirit of the behind-the-scenes of Extreme Home Makeovers with a hunky hero that gives Ty Pennington a serious run for his money. In fact, the men in this book are worth of their own books ...hint hint Melissa Tagg (book 2 maybe?!?) :)

I thoroughly enjoyed the character banter. The tension between the heroine and her hero(s) is awesome. I love the fact the heroine is plucky but vulnerable and let's admit, it's about time we get a heroine who knows how to wield a hammer and use a table saw!

Way to go Melissa Tagg! You knocked this one off the roof and to the moon! Looking forward to book 2!

My Comments
This book is easy to love right from the start…..it’s a sensational debut that immediately pulls the reader in and promises both entertainment as well as depth throughout. I laughed, I was touched, I was surprised, but mostly I enjoyed Miranda’s journey as if I was a friend cheering her on. From the moment I found out about this book I knew I would love it, but I had no idea I would connect with it the way I did.

“What was it Grandma Woodruff used to say? ‘Best way to make God laugh? Tell him your plans.’”

Miranda is the kind of character you either love (and relate to) or you just plain disagree with because of certain decisions she makes (possibly both). She’s a star on a TV show yet she prefers staying away from the spotlight in her personal time. She has no idea how beautiful she is and she’s does everything naturally whether it’s explaining to her viewers how to build something or being klutzy around reporters. She’s terrified of being rejected after her parents left her to be raised by her grandparents and then again after her fiance left her without warning, but she has an amazing heart despite these disappointments. I believe her biggest problem in the story is carrying around her regret and shame for too many years not realizing that God’s grace and forgiveness was available the whole time. However, her overall character and feistiness in the story are a real treat.

Matthew is another unique character in this book. He’s also suffering from past mistakes and having trouble letting go. Yet the first time he meets Miranda he ends up helping her get her truck out of a muddy lake/puddle. Matthew adores his young niece and is willing to relocate for a job to help her get a procedure done that will make her life easier. His relationship with Celine “Cee” is one of the most precious parts of this book and made me think of my awesome nephew the whole time. Matthew is determined to jump start his career, but he’s a reporter with integrity and the more he learns about Miranda (his assignment) the more he connects with her. I was amazed at how much they confided with one another in the story, but sometimes it’s easier to talk with strangers than your best friend.

Another great quote from Grandma Woodruff whose memory lives on in the story, “Dig in, darling. Peanut butter is good for the soul.”

The comic relief character award EASILY goes to Blake “Blaze” Hunziker in this one!! Way to go, Blaze!! The guy is a hunk, a GREAT cook, charming and clumsy at the same time, the perfect fake husband, prone to getting injured (he has endured many surgeries over time from injuries), and a friend who looks out for Miranda’s best interest. One of my favorite scenes in the story is when Blaze and Miranda meet and exchange fake vows, LOVE it! Despite his playful personality, he also has a deeper side himself and he balanced both of them beautifully while dealing with the crazy situation around him. Then at the end he does something even MORE heroic that won my heart over completely, what a guy!

From Grandma Woodruff: “Psalms, honey. When you’re feeling lost or confused, flip open to the Psalms and let David’s prayers be yours.”

For me, this book can be described as the TV show Home Improvement with Tim Allen and Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore (a reporter must cover an assignment or risk losing her job and she refuses to sabotage the reputation of the teacher she has fallen for).

So there you have it. A debut book with a solid plot, WONDERFUL dialogue, and unforgettable characters! I soooo enjoyed Matthew’s family, how Miranda gets closure (that was probably the only thing I disagreed with her about when the ex fiance shows up again, but I was glad this part of the story worked out the way it did), watching her come back to her faith, the transformation both Matthew and Miranda experience, and the forgiveness they find for the ones who have hurt them as well as for themselves. There is betrayal, deception, and fears the main characters deal with, but the beauty and healing that they find proves why the title is so significant and worth having on your bookshelves. This book does have flawed characters within, but I wouldn’t change anything about them and I have no doubt that the author put herself fully into the pages of this book with style, humility, and creativity that makes Made to Last a joyful experience.

I want to thank the author and publisher for the review copy. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

If you love vintage romantic comedies, you’ll love Melissa Tagg’s Made to Last. Melissa is a classic movie buff, and her story was actually inspired by Christmas in Connecticut, a great film where Barbara Stanwyck juggles a houseful of men—some, love interests and some, simply there for comic relief.

The same sort of plot happens often in old films. A beautiful debutante has too many suitors, gets in a pickle, her creative solution blows up in her face, and delightful romantic antics ensue. Think The Philadelphia Story, His Girl Friday, Adam’s Rib and you won’t be far off from the vibe of Made to Last.

But what I especially loved about this story is that the main character isn’t a high society beauty but a power-tool packing working girl.

And her spiritual journey as she wonders “Would she ever hear God’s voice as clearly as the voices of her past?” is very natural and sweet.

Let me set up the story: Miranda Woodruff stars in a homebuilding TV show, From the Ground Up. Her TV persona is a happily married young woman who fixes up her home for her hubby and future children. However, in real life, Miranda is single—which even her producer doesn’t know. So when ratings slump & her producer hires a reporter to boost the show’s publicity, Miranda decides (with some prompting from agent and best friend) to produce a husband. Of course, the reporter following Miranda around is male, single, handsome and attracted to her—but he now thinks she’s married.

Throw in Miranda’s bubbly best friend, suave agent, the reporter’s adorable niece, a stray relative or two—and you’ve got quite a plot. But when Miranda’s husband-to-be from the past shows up, things really escalate! Trust me, you don’t want to miss what happens!

One of my favorite things about Made to Last was the old movie references sprinkled throughout the story. For example . . .

Audrey Hepburn won the humanitarian award Miranda is up for.
Miranda’s agent Brad is “this century’s William Holden.”
Her friend advises, “Think about it tomorrow. At Tara.”
Miranda calms herself with a “Sound of Music-like favorite things: Bubble baths. Bonfires. Powermatic 2000 3HP table saw.”
And here’s a great line: “Gregory Peck should be so lucky to get a smile from Audrey like you just flashed.”

I kept imagining the characters in a musical, like High Society, where Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra burst into song all throughout as they wrangle over who’s going to end up with Grace Kelly.

I can almost hear Miranda singing (to the tune of Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend) . . .

“A hubs from the past
Makes me quite sentimental
But power tools are a girl’s best friend.”

And I must admit to falling for a charming secondary character accident-prone adventurer, Blake “Blaze” Hunziker. Fortunately, Blake will have his own story very soon!

Melissa films Classic Movie Gush with fellow author Clay Morgan, a series of video discussions of vintage movies. (You can follow their YouTube Channel here.) They inspired me to think classic movie. So here’s my attempt at a movie poster . . .

Melissa Tagg's debut novel is a romantic comedy with a sweet resolution. She brings us lovable characters combined with witty dialogue that any reader can identify with. A terrific read.
Miranda Woodruff is a troubled young woman who should have it all. She was born to missionaries in Brazil, but when she was 7 her parents sent her back to the states to live with her grandparents. She returns to Brazil as an adult and volunteers to help build houses. There she meets and falls in love with Robbie. Upon their engagement and return to the US, Miranda couldn't be happier. She interviews for a job on a television show about homebuilding and during the interview she gives credit to her husband, not her fiancé, for teaching her all her skills. She didn't think anything of this, because after all she was getting married and this slip of the tongue wasn't so bad. What Miranda doesn't know or expect is that Robbie will leave without much explanation. No engagement, no wedding, and no husband. Abandoned again by someone she loves, how can God keep letting this happen?
Matt Knox is a reporter who is trying to get his career back on tract after numerous setbacks, of course most of these setbacks are self-induced. For 5 years, Matt has tried to get his career back on tract, but it seems for ever step he takes forward, he lands two steps back.
Everyone is curious about Miranda's husband, because no one has seen him. The media would love to get the story and Matt is approached to shadow Miranda doing a weekly blog that is to end in a tell all article. Matt doesn't want to take the assignment because it feels like tabloid news to him, but ends up agreeing with the hopes this will get his career back on tract.
Three years to the day since Robbie walked out, Miranda is having one of those days you wish you could avoid. Upon arriving at work she hears about the network cutbacks and her show could be facing termination even though nationally she does well in the ratings. She has always felt guilty about everyone assuming she is married and not correcting them, but when she is told she needs to bring her husband out of hiding, she is shocked to say the least. How do you produce a husband you don't have? Well, you just hire a fake one, right? Miranda agrees but is not sure this will work since she and Blaze don't really know each other and she will be shadowed by a reporter. Miranda is apprehensive about a reporter shadowing her and digging into her personal life which could all lead up to her television persona blowing up in her face. Again, how can she make things right?
Yes, she could tell all, which she longs to do, but that might lead loss of her job and the coveted award she's been nominated for. Can she live out this lie to the end and make it all work out? Will she find the inner strength needed to undo the small lie she told years ago.

Made to Last is one of the best contemporary Christian romance book I have read so far this year. It was spunky, humorous, full of emotions that will ache your heart, and written with characters you won't want to say goodbye too.

I would recommend this book to my friends, because it's really relate-able. Whether you've disappointed family, someone dear to you or even yourself this novel uses those issues and paints an endearing image on how these characters deal with the secrets we never want to share.

The story starts off with Miranda Woodruff, the star of the homebuilding show "From the Ground Up". Miranda is a passionate woman when it comes to what she does best: working with tools and wood. She is also very passionate about her job and will do anything to keep it from getting booted off air. Miranda has a secret through: she's not the Miranda Woodruff her fans have came to love. Well, actually, there is only one big difference between the Miranda on t.v. and the real-life Miranda. T.V. Miranda is married and real-life Miranda is still nursing an 3 year old broken engagement wound.Yet, Miranda is determined to keep her show from getting canceled and through this a pretend husband is supplied to boost ratings.

The one question that scares Miranda the most though is will the life she has come to built and depend on come crashing down? What about a chance at real love?

Then there is Matthew Knox, the reporter looking for the story that will change his status from total failure to big time journalist. So it's no surprise that he jumps on the opportunity to do an online blog feature on the popular Miranda Knox. This is when things get complicated. Matthew is talented at what he does, and from his observing Miranda comes to the conclusion she is hiding some skeletons in her closet.

Add in some romance, crazy shenanigans produced by an odd and very full of life fake fiance, and everyone keeping their eyes on Miranda this book packs a punch!

Oh I just want you guys to read this book so much! I have done my best to not give too much away or too little! This book is just a feel good book. It's a feel great book! Seriously, the development spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically for all of Tagg's characters was genuine and honest.

Definitely keeping a look out for Tagg's newest novel!!! Her writing was fantastic! Highly recommend.

Rating: 5 out of 5 bookshelves

Goodreads synopsis:

Miranda Woodruff, star of the homebuilding show "From the Ground Up," will do anything to keep the job she loves. Due to a painful broken engagement and a faith she's mostly forgotten, she's let her entire identity become wrapped up in the Miranda everyone sees onscreen. So when she receives news that the network might cancel her program, she must do the very thing she fears most: let the spotlight shine on her closely guarded personal life. The only problem? She's been living a lie--letting viewers believe she's married--and now she's called upon to play wife to a sweet, if a bit goofy, pretend husband to boost ratings.

Desperate to help his family and prove he's not a total failure, reporter Matthew Knox is looking for a breakout story. When he's offered the opportunity to do an online serial feature on Miranda Woodruff, he jumps at the chance, even if celebrity reporting isn't really his thing. But as soon as he meets Miranda, he knows she's keeping secrets.

When Miranda's former fiance suddenly appears on the scene again, she doubts her life could get more complicated. Juggling three guys, an on-the-rocks television show, and the potential exposure of her deception is way more than she bargained for. Can the woman who makes things look so good onscreen admit it's time to tell the truth about who she is? And if she does, will the life Miranda's built come crashing down just as she's finally found a love to last?

My Review:
Made to Last was sitting in my to-be-read-pile for a few days before I decided to start reading it, and I'll tell you, what was I thinking!! Made to Last was everything and more I thought it would be. Romantic, funny, and dealing with real issues like insecurities. Insecurities, we all have them, I have them. I can't tell you how much Made to Last impacted me. Just what I needed, a reminder that God LOVES us even in our insecurities and our faults, all wrapped up in this satisfying and engaging read. OH HOW HE LOVES US SO!!!

NOTE::: Thank You Melissa and the Bethany House team for this complimentary book to review. I was not paid to write a positive review, all opinions are my own!

I really liked this book. It was such a cute story.

What I liked:

* Matthew and Miranda's relationship.. even though it was a bit too fast for my taste but they were really good together..
* the plot where the main character is a woman who builds homes and have her own show on TV. She is pressured by circumstances to appear with her husband she's always talking about on her show. But the dilemma is that she has no husband .. or let's say it's more complicated than that.. intriguing!
* Matthew's character is also good as he's not a guy to be played for a fool.. he's not a crappy journalist, true he did kill his own career with his blind hatred but he gets what he wants when he wants it.

What I was ok with:
* Blaze's character.. but then he was reduced to back-up character and then he lost my interest.

What I didn't like:
* Robbie's character.. since he appeared and the story lost its charm.. he's been away for so long and now he just wants her to accept him back.. BS!

Content: Clean
Genre: Christian Romance

What I liked about this book: the content is clean. The story had great pacing and the characters are real. I think most readers will really like this book. It is clean, romantic, a few christian themes, but not overbearing or distracting. The main character, Miranda, is likeable and easy to relate to. She is a single woman who pretends to be married to save her show. Enter Matthew Knox, a journalist also trying to save his career by doing a blog about Miranda's show. Their circumstances bring them together and the romance ensues.

There were a few things that I didn’t enjoy, but most were due to personal reading preferences.

Thank you to the publisher for providing this review copy.

All in all this IS a good book, I would recommend it to people who enjoy clean romances.
