Translation was not of a super high quality and the story was quite repetitive to be honest. You could read the first few chapters until Sandy is recruited. Summarize everything past that as 'fighting a monster of the week' until the ending when something actually happens again.
Still its fun to see where much of the inspiration for eastern stories comes from. Worth a read for that context, but only if you're a fan of other east asian stories, like anime.
Journey to the West is one of the four great classics of Chinese literature, but I don’t think this translation does it justice. The English language used is very strange at times and made it difficult to take the novel seriously. I still enjoyed it, but I wish I could’ve read a better translation (or in the original Chinese).
this edition must skip out on many details that flavor Journey to the West with charm cause I would've never known Sandy was loyal if I didn't complain about it to my friends who told me he was in fact loyal
