King Henry Tapes #3

The Foul Mouth and the Troubled Boomworm

Rate this book
My name is King Henry Price.Yes, really.I never been one for love. Don't think I've said the word but a handful of times and was probably lying when it crossed my lips anyway. Or said it cuz that's what you're supposed to say. Not one for love, also not a supposed to say kind of guy either. Say what's on my mind, no matter the consequences, no matter how much trouble it usually gets me into.If I did ever come close to loving anyone though . . . be Valentine Ward. My old flame, heh. Never a phrase more apt, being she's a pyromancer. Flames and Valentine Ward go hand in hand. More than flames even. My star in the darkness, shining so bright. First time I met her I made her cry, but wasn't long after I made her laugh. Even called her "Boomworm" when she accidentally set the library on fire and what ya know? The name stuck.Boomworm. Val. Love of my life, maybe, if I knew what love was. Now she needs my help. Now she's got herself a stubborn sister don't want to go to the same school for the Mancy we did, the Asylum. Only there's a name that matters too. The Asylum. For all the crazy people doing crazy things. Magic. Only it's worse if you don't go.Don't go and it will control you. Don't learn to control it and the Mancy will drive you madder than all the rest. Drive you as mad as my mom, untaught, forgotten, and left to rot. Named her kid "King Henry" of all things. There's a story I got to tell again. For my Boomworm I'd suffer a whole lot worse. One little story. Piece of cake. This was so good! Seriously I'm annoyed I waited so long in between reading book 2 and 3. I know why I did it, they're long, at least longer than I usually go for. Really though usually I have to stop and take a break with a short fluffy story and come back in to something like this refreshed. Nope. Read this sucker straight through, and never once wanted to put it down. The skipping back and forth between timelines keeps everything rolling and you want to find out what happens next again and again. Also, seriously cracked me up. I laughed out loud more times than I can count. I absolutely won't wait so long before moving to the next one.

Mind. Explosion. If you aren't reading this series, then something is wrong with you. And I mean that in the most respectful way. ;)

Caution: I get a little rough and sweary when writing the Foul Mouth book reviews. These books bring it out of me.

The Good
You know what, Raley? I don't even trust you anymore. I don't know if I want to punch you in the throat or lick your brain. Seriously, that ending. My brain has still not processed it. That's one hell of a knee in the crotch. Didn't see that one coming. You might as well have paid a hobo to jump out and flash me his junk and add little tassels on his testicles just for sh*ts and giggles, but even then, that wouldn't have been as shocking as what you did. And damn you to hell, I loved it. So effing amazing.

Anyways, I guess I should get to the review. Though ranting at Raley a little more would be more satisfying, but duty calls. Let's start with what this series is about. King Henry Price (effed up name, I know, but kind of what makes the whole thing funnier) is one of a few who have special abilities in which they can manipulate energy and...stuff. Sh*t, I don't know, its complicated, get off my back (Yeah, my inner King Henry coming through). Anyways, they are called mancers. They are recruited to a special school to learn about their abilities. This series follows the personal recordings of King Henry. He tells us about his time at the school and his life after the school. Sounds simple. It's not. King Henry's life is full of complications, danger, and a lot of swearing. In each book, we go back and forth between the recounting of stories of young King Henry (15) and older King Henry (23). I really, truly love this set up. Because both King Henrys are awesome. Young King Henry is a mixture of smart, stupid, and horny while older King Henry is more a mixture of smart, stupid, and horny...wait!! I have to rethink this. No, sounds about right.

King Henry is a one of a kind character. He's a jerk. No doubt about it. He's even mean sometimes, but it's always in good fun. He may call you a fire crotch but he would put himself in the line of fire the next minute to save your life. You have to take the sour with the sweet. I think this book is a major turning point for King Henry. His on again off again girlfriend, Valentine, is back in town. Val needs King Henry to convince her sister, Christmas (I swear, I want to pop out a kid just so I can name her Christmas. I never thought of that as a name until now), that going to the mancer school is the only option for her unless she wants to go insane by age 30. Spoiler: But as King Henry and Val's family sit down for dinner to have a talk, men in combat gear come and snatch Christmas up for God knows what reason. Now it's up to King Henry and Val to get her back. But the people behind the kidnapping are some scary mofos and no one is brave enough to take them on, except King Henry.

I was so happy to finally get to know Val more. She seems like a complicated character, and she is, but she is also so simple. She doesn't play games. She is up front and almost as aggressive as King Henry. She is the only one who truly put up with King Henry's crap all these years and still stayed friends with him. She never tried to change him, she loved him for his humor, his courage, and even his foul mouth.

This story blew my mind. The twists and turns about blew my socks off. The action kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The humor, as always, was top notch. If you want to laugh, if you want to be shocked, if you want to be entertained, then read this series. The writing is different and it works perfectly for the feel of the book. These books have personality, a whole bunch of face-smacking personality. And after that ending, there is so much tasty possibility for the rest of the books. This sh*t is going to get real, people!

The Bad
All I can say is that it took me a little longer to get use to the writing style this time around. But after a chapter or two I was fine.

The Snuggly
I was so happy to see a little romance this time around. The Foul Mouth books are not romantic by any means, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it in The Foul Mouth and the Troubled Boomworm. I am a girl after all, so I got all doey eyed just seeing King Henry go gooey over Val. It was freakin' adorable.

Expect a lot of cursing and sexual references. And a little sex.

Final Thoughts
Love! I have a whole bunch of sloppy love for this book. There are three or four series in my life that would be hard to live without and the King Henry Tapes is one of them. Everyone needs to give these books a chance because they will give you bookgasms. Lots and lots of bookgasms. Highly recommended.

Quotes
"Fine!" Raj sulked, accepting his broken state and giving up on just the tinniest bit of his usual polite and reserved attitude, "I'm in love...with Miranda."

"Can people be in love with gingers, is that allowed?" I asked.

Terminator seemed to think both sides over before motioning towards Matrix to holster his weapon. There was no argument once the decision was made. "Don't think this means you're going to survive this," he warned.

"I always plan for death," I mouthed off, "find it keeps me alive."

"I don't want to leave you."

"Worried I have a concussion?"

"...More like sure you have one, given that you're King Henry Price and you haven't looked at my breasts once this entire time."

"First time lechery helped diagnose someone..."

"The Foul Mouth and the Troubled Boomworm" is the third book in the King Henry series ... and Richard Raley did it again ... made me laugh so hard, I almost fell from my couch.
Like in the first books of the series two King Henry stories are told in turns. The first is about King Henry, 15 years old at the Institution. The second is about King Henry, 23 years old, now proud artificer shop owner.

This time King Henry (15 years) is fighting together with his class mates of Ultra class ‘09 to win the Winter War - a school tournament - and the heart of Valentine Ward aka the boomworm. Loved to see King Henry trying to win over Val ... along the way King Henry is the oddest/funniest (but most interestingly often successful) matchmaker for his friends. Yeah, King Henry definitely has a way with the girls...

King Henry (23 years) owns a clothing print shop as camouflage for his artificer business. When Val - the boomworm - shows up in his shop to ask Henry to help persuade a teenage girl to join the Institution, Henry agrees to help. He presumes it's an easy job and takes it as an opportunity to spend some (hopefully quality) time together with the boomworm. Of course things do not happen as expected and the nice and slow trip to persuade the teenage girl to join the mancy school ends in a wild ride through the country trying to save said girl...

The story delivers some really unexpected turns and twists - but I do not want to spoil the story for you, so I cannot reveal more details. After the developments in this book ... there is a LOT potential for more King Henry books. Now I am really curious to see how the story will continue in book 4 …

The Troubled Boomworm is the best book in the series so far! If you like Urban Fantasy and lots of humor – King Henry is for you. King Henry - despite all the swearing and cursing - really grows on you. By now he is one of my favorite book characters.

My favorite King Henry quotes:
“Sometimes to know a secret, you need to know a secret exists in the first place.”
“Manners … they’re some scary life-altering shit.”

My rating: 5 stars / A Keeper!

Granted, my children are 19 and 20 because Foul-Mouth is not a series for children. But My family and I have shared the Harry Potter books and the Dresden series and I am now alone in reading these, while they are bogged down in Game of Thrones, but by the time they get done with Those books, I keep telling them they have to meet King Henry. This is my favorite so far, and please PLEASE hurry with the next one. Rude as King Henry is, the stories are creative, the characters are captivatingly distinct and real, either lovable or hatable in turn. If you are offended by the F-bomb then these are not for you, but if you love magic, energy, action and passion these stories, both the short stories and the three novels are capturing my heart and attention and making my friends and family a bit sick of the reminder that I want them to read them so I can finally have a decent conversation about Why King Henry and Valentine and Welf and Ceinwyn Dale are the most wonderful characters I've met this year.

A modern day fantasy. I found this book and books 1 & 2 of the King Henry Tales series entirely entertaining, so much so that I read them back-to-back. OBYW King his the protagonist's name, not his title. The novels switch between flashback chapters of King Henry's school experiences and chapters set in the 'current' period of his life. Rife with adventures with the magically gifted, spirits, etc. Very well conceived and written, plus a good editing job.

Wow. What a mindf@ck. I have to say this leaves books one and two in the dust, although this is far more serious than those.

New enemy - one that even the vamps and weres are scared of. We find out who Meteyos is. Mindf@ck. And then, right at the end.. biggest mindf@ck of all. And if you're not screaming for book 4 then you haven't been reading what I have.

Again a very solid book in the series.

This time King Henry is about 18 years old. The love of his life, Valentine (aka Boomworm) comes to ask him to help her convince her parents and her 14-year-old sister (Christmas) to allow Christmas to go to the academy as she is showing signs of Geomancy ability. Henry does and hence the fun begins.

While at dinner at the home of the parents and Christmas, the house is invaded by 15 special ops (one of them a "mancer". They kidnap Christmas and it's assumed the reason is not for the child's own good! King Henry and Valentine set out to find her.

Along the way, adventure ensues such as going back way into the past and making at least one friend. Learning who or rather what the actual elemental of Earth that King Henry is able to talk and visit with. Finding out that King Henry has a worse nemesis than either Welf or the vampires, or the werecreatures. This nemesis threatens King Henry's entire existence. And that's all I'm going to say. If you have read the first two books, you will not want to miss this one!!!!

Still the foul mouth

This third book easily stands up to the first and second. Well written and funny, interesting believable characters. But now I must HATE the author for he has belittled the Seahawks (& the Bengals, but who cares about them), so I cannot in all good conscience read any more of his GREAT books. My only hope he will issue a full public apology to the whole Pacific N W & British Columbia for his ill aimed slander then I can read more of the wonderful King Henry Tapes.

Wow! This book starts out quickly and then becomes a runaway train all the way to the end.
King Henry's lost love from the Asylum, what the kids call the Elemental Academy, shows up in his shop one afternoon his world stops spinning.
Her sister is 14 years old and a mancer but refuses to leave her family and friends to go to the Academy. She wants King Henry to talk her into going or she will die insane.
The sister is kidnapped by a team of mercenaries and that's when the tale kicks into overdrive.

Another strong one.
Must admit that I devoured this one. Great story, great lore being built AND deepened.
Love Val, specially after the surprise. Kinda saw it but thought "nah. that's fucked up".
And yeah, it's DEEPLY fucked up.
Other than that, 'same old' back and foward from the past to present.
Get to know how ONE of the scars occur.
Jump into the next, coz it ends with a cliffhanger.

One hell of a book

I like the characters, the story, almost everything about it. I never know where it will go next. Great characters. They are real enough that I connect, understand where they are coming from. From my side anyway. Can't wait to read the next book. Only issues is the book jumping between now and when they were in school. Sometimes that bothers me.

A love story

Things get serious at last for King Henry and his true love, Boomworm. Seriously, who else could it be?

But the series moves beyond Hogwarts at last in this third book.

Easily the best of the series to this point. If you're reading these you need to get this book immediately, and if you aren't reading them, you should be.

Not only do we get to finally meet the legendary Boomworm, but the story really opens up into much, much more than any of us probably ever expected. The future of this series is looking fantastic if this installment is any indication.

I could go on and on about how great this is, but without spoiling anything all I'd be doing is pretty much saying, "Read this book!"

Do it!

Third book in the series and still not only going strong but getting even better.
New and interesting characters are still being introduced and still stand out as individuals in an already large cast of characters. The main protagonist is still learning growing and maturing keeping that freshness that so after fades after the first book in a series. Question about the world he lives in are being answered but each answer expands the universe creating more mystery and more questions to delve into. What a wonderful and unique series. I can not wait for the next book.

Best of the series so far! Absolutely awesome! Great character progression both from young King Henry and the adult version! Also I totally thought Isabel was fucking with him and fucking him when I first read that she kept changing her appearance. And I really hope daughter he mentioned in an earlier book "tape" is his daughter with Val.

Getting my hands on the fourth book as soon as I possibly can!

Loved this book. Plenty of action, and I was laughing pretty heavily at some of it. The "End of the Beginning" hooked King Henry up with a bunch of new things to think about. I had to read it twice to make sure I caught everything.

Definitely looking forward to the next entry in the series. :)

Just when I thought the series couldn't throw any more surprises at me...

well, shit. I can't discuss it without spoiling the hell out of everything. I'll leave it at this: it's great, you won't see every twist coming, and at least once you will receive a colossal mindf*ck from this story. It's fantastic, and the protagonist could not be more believable and compelling.

Read it already, dammit!

Four star rating aside, the little foray into Middle Earth made me very, very nervous. I mean, we all know what happened when George Lucas tried to explain the Force. Is the same thing going to happen to the Mancy?
