Mr. Timothy is a cat, prized pet of Miss Pilgrims and her niece, Jo. One day Jo discovers that Timothy has ventured outdoors alone and before long both Timothy and Jo are involved in rowdyism only to be rescued by a lonely boy Ginger.
112 pages of sweet perfection in creating a story of Ginger, a young orphan boy living in the care of a kind rag and bone man named Mr Massey. He comes across a cat, Mr Timothy, being protected from a gang of boys determined to tie a firework to the cat’s tale on this Guy Fawkes Night by young Jo, a niece of the cat’s owner, Miss Pilgrim. Thus are we introduced to the four key figures in this very well written novella. A genuine sense of place & time prevails as we are taken into Ginger’s wartime experiences plus the effects of the Blitz on the East End. Very simple writing and you could very easily give this to a 12 year old to read or read it to them.
This simple story was written in the 1960's and set in the 30's and WW2. There was more substance to it than I expected and it felt like a story that really happened, which I always prefer in a book.
This was a nice book. Minimal plot; nothing spectacular about the writing, but just a gentle read with some lovely characters - particularly Mr Timothy.
