(Book 1 of 5 of "The Chronicles of Staffordshire" Series)
August 28, 1980. It's move-in day at Manhattan's elite, women-only, Paulson College. Nervous freshmen are settling in and meeting their new roommates for the first time. Will she be a bookworm or a party girl? A slob or a neat freak? Will I like her? Will she like me?
Tennis star Lena Sardi doesn't care what her roommate is like as long as she's normal. Lena's life has been practice, study, practice, play since she was a child. She just wants to go to college, meet a nice, no-drama roommate, and build a legal career to fall back on when her always-suspect forehand finally gives out.
Inside 1426 Stilson Hall, Spanish supermodel Lenore De La Fuente has moved in and rearranged the furniture. Her bed is made. Her desk is clutter-free. Her designer-made clothes are hung neatly in her closet. She awaits the arrival of her roommate, dreaming of having just one girlfriend she can finally confide in, a girl she can share her hopes and secrets with and maybe have a little fun with for a change.
The tantrum-throwing tennis pro and the OCD runway cat are about to become the oddest couple of all.
A few miles up the Hudson...
The Prince of Madison Avenue is accepting a burdensome bequest. He is the sole heir to his family's fortune and the secluded estate known as "Staffordshire." But deep within Staffordshire's underbelly a twisted legacy lurks in the shadows. The prince's hands are tied. For the man dreaming of escaping his family's predilection for kink, murky obligations will interfere. To secure his inheritance, The Prince must one day find and wed a woman with a healthy appreciation for the sublime joys of "discipline."
Love is optional.
Paulson's Princesses and Staffordshire's Prince are fated to collide.
Sorry, Lena. Your dreams of "normal" are about to take a very muddy detour...
It’s always dangerous to become an author of erotica. You live this nice, normal, sane life and your friends and co-workers think you’re one person. Then you disappear into your dungeon and become someone completely different.
Like a semi gaining momentum, Guardian Girl by N.C. Simmons may take a page or two to get started, but once it’s gone through each gear, adding more and more power and sensual intrigue, this is a force to be reckoned with. Back track to the 1980’s where two famous, brilliant and wealthy teens let their public facades down as roomies at an exclusive women’s college. Different as night and day, they become the closest of friends, sharing almost everything. Lena and Lenore find that not only are they best friends, like sisters of the soul, but their bond will last through good times, bad times and the fear of the unknown. Through college and beyond these two are the ultimate odd couple, so diametrically opposite in their daily habits and demeanor.
Meanwhile, a wealthy heir is given an unusual ultimatum, or he will lose his inheritance. Welcome to his estate, known as Staffordshire, where no one may enter without an invitation and few will want to leave.
Dark, erotic and full of tension, secrets and discoveries of both life, and of oneself, Rory, Lena and Lenore are about to embark on a journey into the pleasures of the flesh, the heart and the soul, like the Three Musketeers of erotic adventure.
A definite eye-opener, N.C. Simmons fears no genre, scene, or dialogue as we are taken into a world where sexual preference, experimentation and carnal needs are fulfilled while not ignoring the heart, mind and soul. With dialogue that can be rough, or even humorous at times, the characters, especially Lena and Lenore, make this erotic tale come to life with pure human emotion. Not for the shy, or those who may find discomfort in the subject matter, there is so much more to this tale than meets the eye. Intense, dark and full of surprises, get ready to enter N.C. Simmons’ world, you will NOT soon forget it.

(Disclosure. I received an ARC and know the author.)
"Guardian Girl" is the first book in a series called "The Chronicles of Staffordshire." At first, I was nervous reading about a bi-sexual relationship, but then, as I read on, I found myself sucked into the struggles the two main characters go through as they work through their relationship during the 1980's. Like a lot of erotica, there is a billionaire in this series, but the author flips things upside down. The series really isn't about him, or about his dominance. It's really about the two girls.
What I especially loved is that the girls are powerfully written. They are independent, strong-willed, and able to stand on their own. One is a supermodel and the other is a tennis pro. Unlike a lot of the erotica I have read, the women are just as empowered and aggressive as the men, which is a nice change of pace.
But they both have secrets from their past that are affecting their lives and their choices. And one of those secrets will hurt one of the two girls.
There are so many plot twists and characters, it would be hard to know where to begin to describe the story, and the first 10 chapters are all backstory and setup, how the girls meet, how they fall in love, how they meet the one girl's boyfriend. And a lot of what the author puts into the first 10 chapters comes back again and again as the story continues. I am reading the second book now and I am already seeing how things that happen in the first book come around in the second. But once I got past the first 10 chapters, that's when things got really steamy.
As for writing style, I LOVE the author's dialog. The characters really come alive in the dialog and I feel like each of them has a unique personality. But she is not as colorfully descriptive as some authors are about the sex scenes. Where some erotica authors write out vivid colorful descriptions of the sex act, Ms. Simmons keeps the pace moving swiftly and assumes you are going to fill in the gaps for yourself.
But I have to raise a note of caution. This book is hard to categorize. And I guess that applies to the whole series. There are some pretty disturbing scenes of borderline sexual abuse in the book, some of it was requested by the person being abused. Some of the bondage scenes are pretty graphic. One moment there is some great, hot romance, and the next a woman is being handcuffed to a bed and stuffed with a wine bottle. It's very, very hot, but it could be disturbing unless you want to read about that kind of stuff.
I wanted to give this book five stars, but I couldn't. Not because there are plot holes or flaws to the story or because of the sexual content. I think the story is fantastic and now that I'm in the second book I am in love with the characters. And I really love Ms. Simmons writing style. It's conversational and it moves pretty quickly, even though the book is HUGE.
I give it four stars because the editing was not great. I stumbled on a dozen irritating little mistakes as I read the first book. Things like double letters and double words and misspellings and double dashes.
But if you can ignore the self-publishing problems, you might just love this book and this series. I know I can't wait to get the third book and keep learning about Lena, Lenore, Rory, their girlfriends and the girlfriends' husbands.
All in all, I really love this book and I am loving the second one, too. I can't wait to read the next three!
This is an honest review in exchange for a free evaluation copy of Guardian Girl by N.C. Simmons. In Guardian Girl, as part one of the Chronicles of Staffordshire, N.C. Simmons provides an effective and entertaining introduction to the (series) titled setting while creating an intriguing plot through the intense personalities of her characters.
This is a story that goes beyond erotica to highlight and question the limitations of a society as well as the possible boundaries of individuals who find themselves within non-traditional relationships and/or communities of extreme pleasures.
It begins with the innocence of a well-off but typical young woman turned elegant, articulate and traumatized supermodel, the soft and caring nature of a young man with a wealthy family secret that may or may not define him, and an energetic and intelligent pro-sport’s star whose heart (and body) is more guarded than her outgoing personality suggests.
From the moment the two young women meet, as freshmen and dorm-mates at an all-women college, their interactions explode with wit and a mess of real emotion. The scenes flow easily from one to the next as the women become more intimate and their relationship grows to an enviable internal connection. A connection that is unbreakable even in the face of a powerful, and mostly physical, male presence.
As a package deal, he brings both women into his unconventional life and family, offering his to-be wife the world…and so much more. However, with the details of his secret revealed, the women discover, in a raw and penetrating scene, their own secrets not only lurking in the dark, but fighting through in desperate need of exposure.
Guardian Girl is not for the faint of heart. It pushes the envelope of ‘tradition,’ and then some, but if one is willing to put her/himself out there as Simmons does through the characters, it is well worth the read. It speaks to emotional and physical needs regardless of a type of relationship. It is smart, funny and well written. And, as the first part of a series, it offers enough to satisfy the reader and leaves just enough unsaid to keep the reader wanting more.
Any author who can keep me hooked on their full-length novel, like Guardian Girl, has more than earned Five Stars from me. Like most genres, erotica is no exception; it’s all over the place when a reader is trying to make a choice of whether to read a book or not. The Amazon preview pages are always helpful to me.
The author, NC Simmons, demonstrated great talent for unfolding her story. Guardian Girl held my attention through all 378 pages of blistering drama, and plenty of unbridled sex. Because the author took the time to develop the characters of Guardian Girl, the highly charged sexual interactions were more meaningful to me as a reader.
As the story unfolded, I got to know the characters as friends, therefore everything they were involved in, (their work, dreams, conflicts, and sexual liaisons), became more believable to me, the reader. NC Simmons paces her story perfectly, allowing the reader time to adjust and get to know each character as they are introduced. I now know the characters of Guardian Girl so well, that even my Kindle is hungry for the next volume in The Chronicles of Staffordshire, Wild Wild Wives. I hope the author continues to turn out her tantalizing stories. Very good reading, Ms. Simmons!
I admit I haven't read much work that dealt with bi-sexual relationships but once I started reading I got involved in the girls lives. When they met their Billionaire boyfriend, well it was actually supposed to be Freakys boyfriend but they share everything and he was fine with that. Rory lived a lifestyle that the girls were defiantly not used too but their love for him and one another brings the lifestyle to them. The girls were both very rich themselves one being an international supermodel and the other a sports superstar. The story was very Erotic and graphic but also loving. The girls truly loved one another. I will be continuing the journey of the three loves very soon.
Lenore & Lena meet in college and become great friends. They go through college & grad school as room mates. Then the decision is made that the two of them will be together forever. They meet Rory and decide that even a man will not separate them. Enjoyed this book. Was surprised by all the different names that the private parts were called...lol
