I can't believe how many 'that didn't just happen' moments were packed into this book.
For the record, this is the third time I've read The Rain and that statement above still holds true. Not that I needed a reason to reread the book, but I needed to refresh my memory (it's been over a year since my last reading) before the next book in the series (Lost Souls) was released and there were a few updates made since its original release, not the least of which was a brand new cover. As a side note, I love both covers and there are things about each version that I like... no major changes to the plot or characters, so the rest of my review pretty much stands as is...
Confession time... (I do that a lot, don't I?) I got my hands on The Rain about a month before its release. I had been meaning to read a book by Amos Cassidy for a while and when I saw this book I couldn't resist signing up for the tour. Reading the book wasn't part of my stop on the tour, but being the conscientious reader/review that I am I had to know if what I was promoting was good, right? And honestly, after reading that synopsis and looking at the awesome and unique cover, how could I NOT want to read it? So, how did I like The Rain? Let's put it this way. Even though I received an ARC - with no strings attached - I still purchased the book as soon as it was released. I rarely do that folks.... this book was that good. Alright, now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's move on to the review....
Just a little warning... the first chapter is... well... it hurts. I know, that seems a little dramatic, but there's no easy or better way to put it. Reading it the second time wasn't any less painful than the first. It's necessary though. Readers aren't left with any doubt of what Jake lost and where he was emotionally when he moved to Longbrooke. It was a rough way to get to know him as a character, but it definitely made me sympathize with him in a very real way. *sigh*
Longbrooke and its residents were a huge reason why I loved The Rain - and I loved them all - well at least the ones that weren't evil. Greg was the first person that Jake really interacted with and he was one of my favorites. His sense of humor and loyalty were exactly what Jake needed. Ivy was almost a force of nature and I loved the way Jake reacted to her. They all added an extra layer to the story and they each played a very important role. They were well developed and had their own brand of wit and humor. (It doesn't matter how many times I read a certain chapter *cough* 18 *cough*... I will always laugh out loud. I'll also never look at a claw machine again and not grin as I look for a particular toy. ;) ) Yeah, this is definitely a book that left an impression. I love it when that happens.
The characters were just one aspect of The Rain. The formatting was unique and told from several points of view - readers sometimes didn't even know whose POV the story was coming from, but instead of being confusing, it just added to the mystery. Even the way that Jake was clued into what was really going on and the part he played in this new world he'd been thrust into was done in a unique way. (Nope, I'm not giving that away either... it's just too good to spoil.) Jake's flash backs were even an important part of the story. They were more than just filler. It was a great way to get to know him better and to understand exactly what it was that he lost. *sigh*
One of the other things that drew me into this story is that I have a weak spot for the legend that this The Rain centers around. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what legend that is without giving things away. I can tell you that Amos Cassidy took an age old and familiar tale and gave it a unique spin. One that I didn't expect but thoroughly enjoyed.
The Rain was full of surprises. It was an epic fantasy set in a quaint British town with some quirky characters. There was a touch of bitter sweet romance, plenty of action, more than a few surprises, mythological creatures, some coffee spewing laugh-out-loud moments and some jaw dropping, heart breaking, tear inducing, cringe worthy moments. (I still can't believe some of it happened.) And then there was the ending... gah! This is one book that kept you guessing until the very end and then sucker punched you. (I'm not complaining.... just still can't believe it.) This may have been the first book I've read by the Amos Cassidy writing duo, but it most certainly won't be the last.

They do it again! Amos Cassidy's Crimson Series was a unique foray into Urban Fantasy, and I had no idea how they were going to do it with a new series, but they did. And they did it so well.
Jake Pendragon is a man trying for a new start. A horrific incident shattered his life and he thinks moving to a small town would be just what he needs. He meets some interesting people, weird things happen, people start dying, and he realizes he is somehow involved. But the reader is kept guessing right up until the end. You are getting breadcrumbs as you read, but the "big reveal" is still so unexpected that I just sat and stared at my Kindle for a few blinks.
My heart was breaking for Jake the whole time. He would start to heal, then bam, something would happen to remind him of all he lost. Or he would learn something new and incredible to turn his life upside down. Fortunately he makes new friends that know a little something about what he is going through and can help him out.
The side characters are just as entertaining and loveable as Jake. My favorite is Greg. He is the perfect neighbor and I really wish he could move in next door to me. But unfortunately for all of us, he isn't a real live person. And that thought makes me a little sad.
The mythology used in The Rain is one you don't commonly see used in Urban Fantasy books. It was a pleasant surprise, so I won't tell you what it is, but I think you will like it!
If you are looking for something different than your typical UF, your search is over! Pick up a copy of The Rain: Rebirth today!

*Beta Read*
Yet another ensemble cast in a paranormal book with a few shots of 'goes-both-ways' steam- I'm SUCH a fangirl of Amos and Cassidy! As a beta, I think it hit right at 4♥'s, but I think there is room to grow, and tweaking could easily knock this up to a 5. Really interesting new series!
*Official rating will happen once edits are made and I re-read the final copy*
I participated in the beta read, and was given (by Amos & Cassidy) an uncorrected advance copy prior to editing in exchange for my thoughts.

he first chapter is heartbreaking poor Jake. He moves to a small town for a fresh start and the first person he meets is Greg. A Good person to meet with what Jake is going through right now. He tries to get him out and about a bit which is how he meets Ivy another new friend. Straight from the start both of them are good for Jake getting him to be around people again.
The rain story line is a good one, centred around an old legend which always fascinated me. Won't say as be a nice surprise when you read it yourself :)
The characters are brilliant you got Greg the neighbour, Ivy the bookstore owner, Dean the mysterious stranger and staying at Jakes, Karla the head of the group and Crystal who works with Ivy and is seeing Greg. By the end of this book I had been laughing on my seat to see what happened next and heartbroken. Omg so much pain for them and then it ends on a cliffhanger arhhhh. Roll on next book.

Keeps you turning pages. From the very beginning the Rain by Amos Cassidy grabs your attention and doesn't stop. Jake, the main character suffers a tremendous loss in the first few pages. He moves to a small coastal town to try and get away from his heartbreak. It's here where he finds out he has some odd abilities. He meets a mixed group of people that are basically the good guys. As evil chases them, Jake tries to learn how to perfect his capabilities because people are dying. You can't help but love all the characters involved with helping Jake. They are all unique yet blend into a very cohesive group. The ending was so different than what I expected. I can't wait for the second book. The Rain is just that good. Don't miss it.

Eh. Okay read. Interesting gay character, but the concept is just dumb.
Leaves a LOT of things up-in-the-air that should *not* have been for further books in series.
Read the 2nd one: 2 stars.
Not going to read any more of this series.
