Movin' to the Mountains #3

The Reclusive Mountain Man

Rate this book
MARSH
Tal Bellamy is everything I'm not. A jet-setting playboy. A sexy silver fox. A guy who lives his life loudly and unapologetically. We've been friends for almost twenty years. When he comes to town for a visit, I make a vow. There's something I need to get off my chest. Something I've been hiding. Tal's the perfect guy to confide in because I know he won't judge me. The last thing I expect is to get plastered and hook up with him.

TAL
Marsh Duncan is a big, burly mountain man. A recluse. Grouchy at times. Or at least, that's what he wants people to think. Not me. I know the man beneath the gruff exterior. When he's around his brothers or hanging out with me, his kindness and warmth shine through. The truth is, Marsh is actually one giant marshmallow. Another truth?… I'm all-out, head over heels, slap-me-sideways in love with him. My plan is to confess my secret when I visit, not sleep with him. But it seems that I'm not the only one with something to reveal. Now that we've both shared our truth, the question have we ruined our friendship, or are we on the brink of a forever love?

This story was quite funny. Yeah, it was. Quick, funny and had two mature MMCs who've been friends for 20 years.

3.5 - 3.75⭐ for the story and I have to round it down, because again the second half left me wanting for more, there should've been more.

It's a short novel, yes, but when the MMCs get together is where these stories lose their momentum, that enthusiasm that's felt at the beginning of the story quickly just winds down in the second half when it should be going very strong until the (more) satisfying ending.

🔵 Long time friends to lovers
🟢 Age gap - 13 years
🟣 Both gay, but never hooked up
🟡 Mountain man is bottom, submissive, likes nice underwear
🌶️ Good spice, but not nearly enough; t/b

At present Tal, the worldly 54 - year old man with tons of money, fantastic friends, a great life lived and a long career of fucking all the twinks from Berlin to Timbuktu suddenly realises that at 54 years old there's something missing in his life. And he's pondering over what that might be wearing his pink g-string on a yacht in the middle of Australia.

"Maybe I'm growing up? I offer. "Maybe buying a yacht is the first phase of my new life where I settle down, hang up my g-strings, and start wearing more sensible underwear. Hey, if you were in your fifties and had a sublime ass without a hint of cellulite, wouldn't you be showing it off too?"

Yeah, this is Tal, the silver fox with a pink thong. Yep. Sold!

Tal goes to visit Marsh, the guy he's in love with, the reclusive mountain man, the oldest of the three mountain brothers in this series and one of his very good friends.
They hang out, they really get along, but this year Tal decides to do something about those feelings.

"It's not a crush, and it's more than just physical attraction. I'm all-out, head over heels, slap-me-sideways in love with him."

"He works in construction. He can't cook for shit. He drinks scotch. He chops wood... which gives me wood."
😄

I mean, Marsh is really like another planet for Tal, so far out of his comfort zone of boning twinks with daddy issues, right? So of course I was very curious about how exactly was this supposed to go down, since Marsh is a big, muscled guy, but Tal is a top, he likes to dominate, he's very at home with being the one calling the shots... and has no problem picking Marsh up and carrying him to bed.

Tal tells Marsh how he feels, but he's not met with as much enthusiasm, because Marsh doesn't really have luck in love. He's tall, broad, masculine, so he's always expected to top, but that's not who he really is. He's quite submissive in bed, he's a bottom and he'd like for someone to take care of him, nurture him and cuddle with him.

"Why can't I choose who I am? Why can't I be in touch with both my masculine and feminine sides? I like being looked after. I love having someone cook for me. Snuggle me. Think of me. And I love spreading my legs and letting my man ravage me. None of those things make me weak or less than."

Well, it turns out Marsh also has an affinity for lacy underwear and is also chopping wood in it. Yeah.

I think I'll need a minute here. Yeah, definitely will need a few minutes here. Damn.

Tal and Marsh do have sex - and it's pretty hot, but I would've liked it to be longer and more descriptive, to be honest. Marsh is getting to be a bottom for the first time in his life and that was pretty special, he should've gotten more on-page sex and intimacy in general.

After having sex they take a breather and think about things, Tal goes back to his yacht and is this time sulking in his pink g-string while Marsh is coming to terms with his feelings for Tal. Marsh decides to suprise Tal by coming to Australia and Tal is so out of his mind with happiness he can't help but vomit all over the place, he's that much in love - but then fucks Marsh into next week, which again, we weren't getting on-page. Of course not.

After this particular event they stay together, but not much is said about it. I'd like more of their dynamic, of their time alone, of them living together, I mean that's pretty important when two friends decide to love each other for the rest of their lives, right?

These books should've been a bit more developed, the ending should've been really strong in all three and when the couples mingle in their everyday lives, it'd be great to hear more about it than just a sentence or two.

Would I read these books again?

No, I wouldn't, because even the smut didn't impress me (except in the first book), but they're no-angst, easy stories with good visuals and endearing characters, so I definitely liked them, only they needed a bit more work to make them really fantastic and sexy - because I'm guessing that's what the author wanted, otherwise we wouldn't be hearing about no damn veiny giant dicks and lacy boxers.

I probably won't be reading this author again. 🫤
Don't know, maybe.

I have enjoyed all the books in this little series, but at the same time I do think they are a bit too short. Like here, a lot of the relationship development takes place off page. The first book in the series has past letters between the two MMCs so their history was more on page that way. But on the other hand, sometimes you’re in the mood for a quick read and don’t need a high level of detail. :)

3.5 stars, rounded up

- age gap
- besties to lovers
- opposites attract

Tal and Marsh met an orgy twenty years ago and hit it off, just not in the way you think. The two have never crossed the lines into sexual territory, not wanting to ruin the friendship, but after all this time this are about to change. Both Tal and Marsh have secrets that will alter the course of their friendship, both hoping in the right direction.

This was probably my least favorite of the trio, but was still really cute and kept me hooked regardless of that! Marsh and Tal may be polar opposites, but their friendship and relationship just works.

I was so incredibly excited to read this novella as I absolutely loved the first two in this series. They were perfect in my opinion for how short they were. Unfortunately this one did not hit the spot. I didn’t feel any connection to the characters at all. Everything important was either skipped or rushed through which I understand will happen in a novella but we missed out on too much info here.

The one thing I did enjoy while reading this book was seeing the brothers and their partners from books 1 and 2. I highly recommend those books still and if you like them and give this one a try I hope you enjoy it as well!

3 Stars ⭐️. Still fun but I didn’t enjoy this set of characters as much as the first two. Still highly entertaining and a great ending to round out the trilogy.

"Tal, you're… you're everything. Beautiful. An incredible friend. Loyal. Kind. Chaotic. Brilliant."

He comes over to me and slides his hands around my waist. "You forgot one thing."

"What?"

He leans in and kisses me, nice, slow, and sensual.

"Yours."

This was short and sweet. I didn’t read any of the others in the series, I was just looking for a sweet novella to read. These two had sweetness in spades. Long time friends who become more. They made for the cutest couple.

I have to say, after loving book 1 & 2 this last one really left me disappointed.
This looks more like an idea for a book than a really fleshed out story. I’m sure it could have made a great novel if more developed but with the same number of pages as the previous ones this one felt empty.

While Tal wants to confess his love,Marsh’s big secret that he’s scared to reveal to his BFF is that he’s a bottom (despite people’s assumptions.) A bottom and a submissive and yet…we never get to see the submissive aspect. We just get one quick sex scene that is done in 2 pages and that’s it. I hate when writers tease kinks, dynamics, fantasies and then never show any of it 🙄
At the end he also talks about his feminine side and apparently his new love for lingerie but it felt like it came out of nowhere just for the epilogue. Bad pacing.

Also the Australia plot line felt really stupid: Tal just moved there 2 months ago but decides it’s time to confess his feelings to Marsh now, even though Marsh lives in the USA?? So unless Marsh accepts to follow him and move his whole life what’s the point of the confession? “I love you so you kind of have to move countries for us to be together”🤣 Which is even weirder when you see Marsh loves his mountain and being with his brothers…

They spend 3 days together at Marsh’s place but we don’t even see it all and then Tal is gone in a flash. This and the rest of the book felt so rushed IMO. A pity because I really loved the other brothers’ stories (and I was glad to see them here) but this one didn’t deliver. I’m glad I read it through KU :/

(Also I love when authors think you can just move countries so easily, especially Australia which is a very hard place to emigrate to 🤣)

The Silent Mountain Man ⭐⭐⭐
The Curious Mountain Man Coming Soon!

Content/Trigger Warnings: Explicit sex scenes, grief

This was so freaking precious and wholesome! I feel like we rarely see romance stories where you're following two individuals who are 40 years and up. I need more romances like this one, please and thank you! I also listened to this via audiobook and the narrator did a fantastic job! There's also conversations about talking about one likes and how people can have the wrong idea about you just based off appearances. Overall, there was so much that I loved about this novella! You better believe I'm going back to read the first two books in this series!

All thoughts, feelings, experiences, and opinions are honest and my own.

***ARC Review***

This is my honest and voluntary review for the ARC I received.

The Reclusive Mountain Man is the third novella in Casey Cox’s Movin’ to the Mountains series. Tal from Heart Unbroken is in this book! Also, oldest brother Marsh gets his turn in the spotlight. Lol. (And of course Leo and Rove make an appearance as well). I love that the MCs in this novella are older. Tal is fifty-four and Marsh is forty-one. Tal and Marsh have been friends for almost twenty years.

I love how Tal just accepts his feelings for Marsh and goes after what he wants, without knowing if it will mess everything up or not. He’s ready to give up his playboy ways. Marsh is hiding the truth about his preferences in the bedroom. I like that Tal brings out a different, softer, more playful side to Marsh. I think their Corner time is sweet. It takes a little bit of time for both MCs to reveal their secrets to one another, but they are immediately supportive and accepting of them and one another once they do.

Tal and Marsh have excellent chemistry when they finally get together. I think it’s appropriate that it takes Marsh a little bit longer to admit his feelings for Tal, since he’s had less time to wrap his head around it. It’s super sweet when he goes after his man! I like the arrangement they come up with in regards to staying in the U.S.A. and Australia. Seeing Harrick and Branum again in this novella was fantastic. I love the rapport between the three brothers (and their respective partners).

This third novella in the series wraps everything up in an endearing way. I’m sad to see the series go, but I’m glad that all three brothers got their HEA!

Update: I was unaware this was an AI generated cover prior to reading this book. I in no way support using AI for books. Just wanted to say this and will be changing my review because of this.

OK, hear me out. This story wasn't bad it just wasn't as powerful or moving as the first two of the trilogy. Where those will stick with me, this one was just a fun, quick read.
Was happy to see Marshall get his happiness and be his true self. Just with Tal, I didn't feel that palpable energy as with his brother's story. I am happy to see Casey steered from the bottom stereotypes that anyone can be a bottom and shows how that judgment by both parties changed these two men's lives forever.
Great trilogy if you're looking for quick fun reads.

this was another really cute book.

i think out of the three, this may have been my least favorite simply because i didn’t vibe with the sexual dynamic between the characters quite as much (because it’s not what i want in a relationship), but it was still really good. i also appreciate the author writing this story to combat the masculine top and femme bottoms stereotypes. marsh was a cutie and he deserves so much love. it breaks my heart that people have rejected him for his preferences in the past and made him feel like he can’t share those and should be ashamed of them. tal was so kind and caring, and i love how he was so open with marsh about his feelings and gave him time to process his own.

i think this is the only book of the three where i felt like things seemed a little rushed, not because they necessarily were but because of the story set up. in the first book the characters meet after being separated for years, and we get some backstory about why they fell in love in the first place and the letters also us a glimpse of that. in the second book we’re there for the entire love story. in this book, we start off the story with tal already admitting his love for marsh, but we don’t really know why. i wish we got more of their past and how he went from seeing him as a friend to wanting to be more.

other than that, this book was really good. of course i wish it had been longer so we got to see more of why they fell in love with each other, but i really enjoyed the story we did get. i love these three brothers a lot, and the family they have built with their partners is so wholesome and adorable. it was so heartwarming to see more of the relationship between the brothers as the series went on.

Here's Casey Cox's "The Reclusive Mountain Man" instead (it's the third and final book in her Movin' to the Mountains series).

I love Casey's books and her characters and her happily ever afters. Sometimes, the utter lack of angst is a pleasure, an anxiety break, but other times, I need something to drive the story, to set the stakes, to make it worth going onto the next chapter. Does that make sense?

The Reclusive Mountain Man is the third and final Movin’ to the Mountains book by Casey Cox.
This series just made me so happy - three brawny, bearded brothers, each finding their own HEA.
Oldest brother Marsh has a secret: one he’s finally ready to share with his best friend Tal. And even though they only meet a few times a year, he feels closer to Tal than anyone except his brothers.
Silver fox Tal is a fashion photographer with a secret, too. He loves his friend of over 20 years and this is the visit he finally confesses his feelings.
What happens next surprises them both.

What I loved:
🧸When Marsh revealed to P.J. in The Curious Mountain Man that he had unconventional desires, I wasn’t sure where his story would go. Color me pleasantly surprised.
🧸Older MCs. Marsh is 41 and Tal 55. This gave them time to figure out what/who they really wanted. They have a lot of fun with their ages, and make maturity sexy. (And Tal can still rock a neon pink g-string!)
🧸 OMG, their origin story! I adore Marsh for being so honest. So he accidentally went to an orgy and they spent the night talking…
🧸And I loved that Tal was friends with Rove and Leo from Hearts Unbroken

Marsh is such a sweetheart. And even though Tal kissed a lot of frogs (and twinks!) once he made up his mind Marsh was his guy that was it.
Like all the other books, there a lovely message about how the right one will accept and love you because of who you are. Bonus: the relationship between the brothers and their partners is so funny, supportive, and real.
TRMM is another short and sexy novella that you won’t want to end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

This story is about the elder Duncan brother Marsh and his long-time friend Tal, they have known each other for almost twenty years and try to meet once or twice a year when Tal travels to the mountain town.
Tal is a photographer who always travels and is a fuckboy who has travelled around the world fucking all the twinks but now he is in his mid-fifties & he is missing something, also he wants a partner who will never judge him and also he realised he is love with Marsh.
Marsh likes to live in his mountain town and be close to his brothers but now that his brothers have fallen in love, he also wants a relationship, but people have always made assumptions about him as he is a big mountain man.

Tal and Marsh had an amazing friendship and I loved the moments when they could speak with each other without any trouble, and the sparks between them were visible to everyone around them but Marsh was not sure what he felt for Tal was friendship love or something more.

I liked the scenes with Marsh's brother & their partners and also how Eddie & PJ cared for him and helped him navigate his feelings and his relationship with Tal, it was all so beautifully written. And it was amazing to meet Leo & Rove again.

I enjoyed this series so much and recommend you to check them out.

4.25 stars. Tal is almost fifty-five, he and Marsh have been friends for twenty years. He comes to terms with his feelings and has to take the chance… telling Marsh about his love for him.

Marsh is forty-one, a mountain man, looking forward to seeing his best friend coming over.
They are completely different but their friendship is strong for twenty years.
Marsh has something to tell Tal, he’s been hiding this for too long.
Oh boy, both are anxious about how the other would react. (Spoiler: they are fabulous)

Their friendship is so good, I loved watching them. When they both revealed what was on their chests, something hot happened. I loved how the author made it flow naturally.
Marsh his mountain brothers and their partners are also in this story, I adored them.
To enjoy this read you don’t necessarily have to read the others, but hey, it’s so much fun.
I really recommend doing it.
Overall a sweet, kind read, with lovable characters. The whole concept of this series was just awesome!

Ah, miscommunication. Lack of communication. Communication about everything but what they should be communicating about.
Marsh is the last brother. He's also a big, burly, lumberjack-looking mountain man. He looks like he should be a big, dominant top. He's also in love with his best friend.
Tal is the best friend. Handsome, rich, and a silver fox. He gets plenty of 'attention', but he really wants the attention of his best friend.
Tal would love to *finally* lavish Marsh with attention, but would big, handsome Marsh really want to put himself in Tal's hands? Tal's in for a big surprise when he learns that all is not as it seems with his larger-than-life, quiet, reclusive friend. When Marsh realizes that Tal not only wants him, but can give him what he wants, will they be able to put their fears of commitment aside and be together or is Marsh destined to be another, while unintended, notch on Tal's jet-setting bedpost?

I love me a rugged softie! I want me a man who gives great hugs too!

We finally get to really meet our oldest brother Marsh. It was clear in the first two books how much he loved his brothers and the men they fell in love with, so I’m glad he finally got his happy ending.

And with none other than a gorgeous famous photographer. I’m a big softie myself for some mutual pining and friends to lovers, so these two are perfect. And I enjoy the worlds apart men finding an exciting and sweet way to bring them both together. And the awkward lead-up to their declarations was a lot of fun.

I’m excited for Marsh to get to have a big and exciting life and love, and for Tal to find someone who wants to know and love him.

I hope we’ll get to see some of them again because I’m not ready to be done with these rugged men and their lovers.

We get to see a different side to Tal than what he shows in Heart Unbroken. This cute story features the last mountain man brother, Marsh and Tal, a fancy jet setter photographer who's commitment adverse. This one has a lot of heart, like the others in the series, and I really liked how Marsh and Tal already have a really strong friendship. I will say that I thought there would be a bit more spice in this one and that we'd get to see a bit more of Marsh being taken care of. The spark between these two wasn't as bright for me than the previous in this series. I'm not sure if it's because these two didn't have to get to know each other, since it's already established or if it's because I'm still left feeling that I would've liked to have seem more of these two being physically affectionate with each other. It was still a fun read and I did love Tal getting his HEA.

I do recommend reading this one last, as we get a super cute scene of Marsh's brothers' partners cornering him a bit. It's not too much of a spoiler but they were featured in the previous stories.

This final book was great! This was a great age gap/ long term pining book. Reclusive mountain man X Silver fox rich playboy.
Now that doesn't seem like they would even be in the same league for friendship. But they actually are great friends.
I think in terms of this book, Marsh really calms down Tal and how hectic his jetsetting playboy lifestyle is.
They have a good friendship dynamic, but it's funny how a small unsaid thing stops them from going further.
1 unsaid truth.

I laughed when I saw how Tal and Marsh met. I can't EVEN imagine what that looked like, but it fits Tal perfectly.

I think in terms of this book they are total opposites and where it doesn't look like it would work on the outside.... it really does for them.

Overall, the storyline, characters and book tie in from book 1 & 2 were great. It flowed seamlessly.
Book 1-3 has different couples and pairings and I think they all reflect the brothers and their partners very well.
I would recommend any of these books if you are short on time and want something sweet, sexy & has an interesting backstory.

Marsh and Tal have been friends for 20 years despite living very different lives, Marsh as a reclusive and quiet mountain man and Tal a jet-setting playboy who has only now decided to change his ways.

When both men confide in each other and confess their biggest secrets the two become closer than they ever have been before.

I am so sad that this series has come to an end but it has concluded on such a high note that I’m content to let it go. I loved having Marsh and Tal as our MC’s in this book as it is somewhat less common to see men in their 40’s and 50’s as romantic interests in a lot of romance reads. Their friendship has been healthy and stable for such a long time and moving from friends to lore felt so natural and sweet.

I also loved seeing Marsh’s brothers and their partners a lot more in this book as the entire overarching story was wrapped up. This was a great conclusion to a well written, low angst and overall heartwarming series that I’ve had a great time reading.

The final novella in Casey Cox's Movin' to the Mountains series. What I liked best about these novellas is that they were perfect for a quick one-sitting read and they were about 3 brothers who live and work in the mountains, but this was my least favorite of the 3.

Marsh is the oldest of the brothers and this is his romance with his longtime friend, Tal. I will say this made for a fine read, I just prefer more emotional connection to the characters and I just didn't feel it here. I did like how Marsh was able to finally be comfortable with someone and share what he was really looking for in the bedroom. Otherwise, I didn't feel much connection to Tal especially, or their romance. But it was a quick read and finished out the series nicely. I did really enjoy seeing Marsh's brothers and their partners make appearances!

3/5 stars. I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

🤐Swapping secrets: 2 friends reveal all👥

The opposites attract and more mature couples finding their certain someone tropes featured in this story are scenarios that I really enjoy. Here ageing, globetrotting playboy photographer Tal based in Australia is considering a major lifestyle change and rarin' to share a romantic secret with his long-time, American mountain man friend Marsh. Funny, though, Marsh is also ready to spill the beans about a secret part of his life and Tal is his chosen confidant. They just have to find the perfect moment and setting to open up during Tal's brief visit.

It's a good story for its length with some heat but could have been better had it been longer and delved deeper into their lives and character. The Reclusive Mountain Man can be read as a standalone, though Marsh's brothers are each featured in the previous two volumes in this series of novellas.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the story; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Opposites Attract

The third book in the Movin to the Mountains series was an unexpected surprise featuring the eldest brother. It was fun having the two younger brothers and their partners interacting with until now the absent older brother. I didn't expect the person that the slightly jealous older brother was paired with.

Despite being close friends for many years neither wanted to ruin such a great relationship by introducing sex into the equation. Their interactions were perfect until they weren't. Something changed in the dynamic Latent feelings bubble to the surface. Still neither wanted to risk it - the divulging of their most guarded secrets. How do you garner the courage and run the chance of losing everything? You weigh the pros and cons & if what you'd be gaining is even better than what you have now which is pretty fantastic. Sometimes you gotta go for broke and lay all your cards on the table.

The Reclusive Mountain Man is the third and final book in the mountain men brothers novellas. While well written and engaging, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first three. It just didn't really make sense to me why they held off getting together for so long and I found it a little sad how much time they'd wasted apart, thinking they couldn't make their different life styles work.

However, if you're a fan of later in life, long time lovers to full time lovers, I think you'll really enjoy it. It helped that we start with them both ready to get serious with each other, and taking the initiative to speak up about their new needs for their relationship. They had good communication (a theme that I appreciated in this series) and I liked that their solution was an even split of time together between the places they each loved most.

Even though personally it wasn't my favorite of the three, it was still a sweet little novella I can recommend.
