Originally published in 1940, this book is a detailed and in-depth study of the history of the Ukraine up to the beginning of WWII. Allen examines the geographical and historical factors behind the development of the Ukraine and its people, as well as giving an overview of its economic history. This book will be invaluable for anyone with an interest in the history of Eastern Europe.
William Edward David Allen was a British scholar, Foreign Service officer, politician and businessman, best known as a historian of the South Caucasus—notably Georgia.
He was elected as MP in 1929 as an Unionist in Belfast West. In 1931 he defected to Oswald Mosley's New Party.
A detailed history of social, political and military events in Ukraine over the thousand years up to just before WWII. The author seems very knowledgable and the research in documents in Ukrainian, Polish, German and Russian was extensive. If you want infomation on the background to the current war, I recommend it. Although, be warned, the actions of the rulers are rarely anything other than appalling.
