Has the final countdown to the end days begun? Are the heavens telling us we are nearing the end? Astronomers have noticed it is coming. Historians have noted its significance. In 2014 and 2015, there will be a phenomenon in the skies of four blood moons falling during Jewish feasts. This has only happened three times in recorded 1493-94, 1949-50 and 1967-68. Each time these dates have had extraordinary significance for the Israelites. From the discovery of the New World to the creation of modern-day Israel, these years of the four blood moons have truly been turning points in history. Bible prophecy describes the moon being darkened and turned to blood. What is the significance of these signs in the skies? What will the future bring? Prophecy expert Mark Hitchcock guides you through the relevant Bible passages so you can understand the times in which you live.
Mark Hitchcock was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He attended Oklahoma State University and graduated from law school in 1984. After working for a judge at the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals for four years, Mark was led to attend Dallas Theological Seminary, graduating in 1991. Since that time, he has served as senior pastor of Faith Bible Church in Edmond, Oklahoma. He completed his PhD at Dallas Theological Seminary in 2005 and serves as an associate professor of Bible exposition at DTS. He has authored over thirty books related to end-time Bible prophecy that have sold over one million copies. His books have been translated into over ten languages. Mark is a frequent speaker at churches and prophecy conferences both in the United States and internationally. Mark and his wife, Cheryl, live in Edmond, Oklahoma. They have two sons, Justin (married to Natalee) and Samuel, and two grandchildren.. You can also connect with Mark on Facebook
I really like Hitchcock's book because someone finally has published a valid critical response to Hagee's speculation. Hitchcock agrees with Hagee's theology of the end times (pre-trib secret rapture) but disagrees with the conclusions Hagee drew from Scripture and historical events. This is a reasonable book, bringing Hagee to task. For example, the Scriptures also talk about the sun being dark at the same time the moon turns red. Yet Hagee ignored that. Also, the events related to the previous tetrads? Well, the expulsion of the Jews and the founding of the state of Israel happened before the tetrads, and the Six Day War happened after the first lunar eclipse but before the rest. Hitchcock shows how the tetrads then do not qualify as true biblical signs. If you've read the hype and want a reasonable look at the information, this is the book for you. My only caution: just know that historically, Christians have believed in other theologies of the end times, particularly, no secret rapture. See my full review at http://bit.ly/1hYn9YW. I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for an independent and honest review.
I picked this book up only because it is part of Tyndale's summer reading program, and my library had it. I didn't think I'd actually end up reading it, to be honest, but I checked it out, looked it over, and did get started.
I don't love reading about Biblical Prophecy, particularly all the end times stuff. I had no interest in another big discussion about some new end of the world prediction. I'm vaguely aware of the hype about the four blood moons in 2014-2015, and how a couple coincide with Jewish holidays. And how that spells TEOTWAWKI. I remember the one a couple of months ago (we viewed it) and I remember looking at the info about where it would be visible, and I remember thinking "if this is prophetic, shouldn't it be visible in Israel?"
That is what this book is about. It is about some of the problems with the Blood Moons prophecy specifically, and some other end times prophecies more generally.
I didn't pick it up and read it straight through. It was a book I could put down. But after a chapter or two, I did want to keep reading so I could hear what Hitchcock had to say.
In 2014 and 2015 we will experience lunar events which are drawing the attention of many people. There will be four occasions in which a blood moon (which is a full lunar eclipse in which the moon turns an orange or red color) will occur on the same date as a Jewish feast. This series of four blood moons has happened three other times in the past five hundred years. On each occasion, significant events have occurred in Jewish history in the years surrounding the events (though not precisely in the window of the four blood moons). As this next set of events draws near, speculation has arisen about whether or not there will be another historical event relevant to either Israel or the larger world.
Mark Hitchcock has written Blood Moons Rising as a response to the recent discussion of these events as popularized by John Hagee. Hagee has popularized this theory based on the teachings of Mark Blitz of El Shaddai Ministries. This view has received some attention in the media lately, and may receive more attention as the time of the four blood moons passes. According to Hitchcock, Hagee claims that “This is the hand of God orchestrating the signs in the heavens. The final Four Blood Moons are signaling that something big is coming…”1 Additionally, Hagee claims that America may be facing judgment if they do not repent.
The past three series of four blood moons occurred as follows: The first series was in 1493 and 1494, near the time of the Jews being expelled from Spain in 1492. The second of these series occurred in 1949 and 1950, just after Israel again became a nation again in 1948. The final occasion was in 1967 and 1968; the Six Day War in Israel occurred in 1967. Hagee’s claim about America’s future is based on the fact that 2015 is a Sabbatical year for Israel, a year in which Israel was supposed to allow the crops to rest without planting in the Old Testament. Since Israel ignored this command, they were exiled to Babylon. Hagee applies this judgment to the United States, and cites events in the past which correlate to the Sabbatical years leading up to 2015 (the 2008 stock market crash, the 9/11 tragedy in 2001, as well as other events leading back to at least 1973). Hagee does not give specifics on what he believes will happen, other than to say “This we know: things are about to change forever.”2
A discussion about these theories raises many questions, such as: What is the Biblical basis for these views? Are these events necessarily being linked to end times, or just “a big event”? How often did four blood moons occur before five hundred years ago? Did significant events occur during those previous series? Is it a stretch to attribute the historical events to each time period since two of them only occurred in the years surrounding the events, and not on the same years as the blood moons? Are some making the claim that the fourth such event will be the most significant? Why is the commandment and judgment of Israel’s sabbatical years being applied to the United States? Why is 2015 cited as the year something will happen although 1948 and 1492 were not Sabbatical years? Is this theory a type of “date setting” about end times?
Hitchcock addresses many of these questions in his book. In addition to discussing the theories involved with these events, Hitchcock’s book also provides: a summary of several approaches to end times prophecy; an in depth look at the Biblical passages associated with the claims; and, a proposed chronology of end events based on a pre-tribulation and premillennial eschatology. Based on this framework, Hitchcock states that the blood moons events do not fit into an eschatology based on any Biblical prophecy.
“None of the verses quoted to support this theory mention four blood moons. The entire blood moons prophecy is based on something the Bible never specifically predicts. The Bible does mention the moon turning to blood in connection with Christ’s return, but it never mentions four blood moons, let alone four blood moons in conjunction with the Jewish feasts of Passover and Tabernacles.”
Hitchcock’s examination of five key passages used to build the blood moons theory leads him to conclude:
“Let me reiterate that I do believe in signs of the end times. I believe there are legitimate signs today that point towards the coming of Christ, and I have no personal ax to grind against the blood moons prophecy or is proponents. Nevertheless, I think a fair, contextual reading of the five biblical passages used to support this view shows its sizeable shortcomings.”
I have not read Hagee’s book and I am cautious about saying how well Hitchcock has represented his view. My interest is studying the Scriptural basis for this theory rather than evaluating Hitchcock or Hagee. Many world events are occurring which could fit a setup of the conditions for the end times events to occur: Israel has been re-established as a nation, the countries surrounding Israel continually threaten its existence, and it would not be surprising if imminent events result in more stage setting.
Each generation has looked to events of their time and hypothesized on how those events could fit into Biblical prophecy. Scripture teaches that the Rapture could happen at any time; if Rapture or some other significant event does occur soon, it will not necessarily be because of these lunar events. It is likely that an event in 2015 or soon thereafter will occur which some may attribute to this theory. On matters of end time prophecy, I take a skeptical footing and decide to ask many questions; Scripture is the authoritative filter for discerning the veracity of any claims. My responsibility is to obey God and remain busy until the end; I like to remind myself of the sage advice I was given as I began studying eschatology, “Be ready for anything.”
Notes:
1. Hagee, Four Blood Moons, 237.
2. Hagee, Four Blood Moons, 51.
Additional Note: I am not familiar with the beliefs of Mark Blitz or El Shaddai Ministries beyond the mention in this book. Supposedly, Blitz is the one who originally formalized this theory. A comprehensive look into this theory should include Blitz’s view; my purpose in this piece is to review Hitchcock’s book.
Thank you to the people at Tyndale House Publishers for a copy of this book for review.
Source: Free copy from Tyndale in exchange for a review. Summary: John Hagee, has written a book which was published last fall, it's entitled: Four Blood Moons. The book has been featured and critiqued by news media, and Christian blogs and websites. Hagee on his television program has aired his views on the four blood moons. The link for his website: John Hagee. Mark Hitchcock, has written his book Blood Moon Rising, in response to Hagee's prophetic beliefs of the Four Blood Moons; in addition, Hitchcock points to what God's Word states on eschatology and Jewish Feasts. Bible Prophecy or eschatology is a topic which stimulates strong views. From those who believe in premillennialism, amillennialism, or postmillenialism. To those who have various beliefs about the rapture and tribulation. The four blood moons, or tetrad, are lunar eclipses which happen during the "Jewish feast days or high holy days". These "days" are the Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles. The dates for the four blood moons, plus a total solar eclipse are: "April 15, 2014---Passover October 8, 2014---Feast of Tabernacles March 20, 2015--Total Solar Eclipse April 4, 2015---Passover September 28, 2015---Feast of Tabernacles." The blood moons are called this because of a "reddish hue or blood color." John Hagee has stated, "God is getting ready to change the course of human history once again. He is preparing to display the next series of signs in the heavens." page 9 (from, Blood Moons Rising).
Mark Hitchcock's aim for Blood Moons Rising. "My goal is to present what I believe Scripture says about the end times, examine the historical evidence for the blood moons prophecy, and leave you to make your own decision. I used to be an attorney, so I want to make my case, present the evidence, and let you render your own verdict." Page xi. My Thoughts: Eschatology teaching often borders on more fiction than fact. A more politically correct word is speculate, but it's really fiction. End time books and movies mesmerize and make the hair on the back of our neck all prickly. The topic is interesting, provoking, and creates discussion. Discussion promotes attention. This is the first book I've read on Bible prophecy of end times. I've read the Bible from cover to cover numerous times. In 2013, I read Revelation twelve times in twelve different translations. Blood Moons Rising, is the first book on this topic I've read. Being new to this type of genre can be positive and negative. Positive in that I'm fresh to the topic, no preconceived views of it, and further I'm not a fan of any speaker or pastor on eschatology. It's negative in that I am an inexperienced reader in the field.
My feeling is Mark Hitchcock, has written a basic, beginning piece on eschatology. This includes a mini-study of the book of Revelation. He has included a study of Leviticus 23, which is on the Jewish Feasts. Hitchcock is a believer of premillinnialism and pretribulation view. The reader has to take in to context his beliefs. The average Christian reader is not a heavy theology based reader. I believe Blood Moons Rising, is an adequate and interesting look at the subject for beginners to eschatology and the study of blood moons. For those readers who have more than basic knowledge (or a fan of John Hagee) this is not a book which would be accepted well. Hitchcock did debunk several points in John Hagee's belief system about the four blood moons, for me this meant the book excelled in its mission. Hitchcock gave Scripture evidence for his case, this point is tantamount for his mission. Over-all, Blood Moons Rising, is an enjoyable book to read, it's interesting, encouraged me to look up Hitchcock's Scripture references, and created an interest to read more books in this genre.
My thoughts: When I first saw Blood Moons Rising offered as a book to review, I really thought it was an end-time novel. I had never heard about the blood moons, though I had heard about the moon turning to blood as an end sign. But I am neither a theologian nor a Biblical scholar and am not even well versed in debating or discussing Biblical prophecy. I’m just a lady that has attended church all her life and heard some really good preaching. I am a Christian and I take my Christianity seriously. So when I received the book and saw that it was a non-fiction treatise by Mark Hitchcock on the subject of the four Blood Moons and the theory of blood moons previously and prophetically affecting the Jewish peoples, I decided to do a bit of research prior to delving into the pages of Blood Moons Rising.
As I found in my own research and saw in Mr. Hitchcock’s book, there is theory that John Hagee adheres to based on the premise that since these blood moons centuries ago occurred when major events also occurred impacting the Jewish peoples, that during the years 2014-15 when there would be four of the blood moons occurring the events would serve as a sign of end times. Mr. Hitchcock disagrees with the reading of signs into these occurrences. Mr. Hitchcock also disputes the methods of interpretation used by these theorists.
Blood Moons Rising is not a heavy read, but it certainly is not light reading either. I believe Mr. Hitchcock has stated it concisely in this statement referring to Mr. Hagee and other theroists …. “speculation and a misinterpretation of Scripture.” We are to be careful in our interpretation of the Bible and especially in assigning signs in the sky and earth as prophetic to the coming of Christ and the end of time.
Points of interest: John Hagee published a book called "Four Blood Moons: Something Is About to Change," which suggesta a link between the new lunar tetrad and a biblical prophecy about the apocalypse. Joel 2:31 KJV states: "The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come." Revelations 6:12: "There was a great earthquake. The Sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair. The whole Moon turned blood red." Tetrad dates coincide with Passover (April 15, 2014 and April 4, 2015) and the Jewish observance of Sukkot (Oct. 8, 2014 and Sept. 28, 2015)
DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy of Blood Moons Rising: Biblical Prophecy, Israel, and the Four Blood Moons from Tyndale Blog Network in exchange for my honest review. Opinions expressed are solely my own and I received no compensation for this review.
I was very hesitant to read Blood Moons Rising: Bible Prophecy, Israel, and the Four Blood Moons by Mark Hitchcock. I saw it when it was first coming out and have been on the fence about reading it ever since. I finally decided to give it a chance and I was pleasantly surprised. The description of Blood Moons Rising reads:
"Has the final countdown to the end days begun? Are the heavens telling us we are nearing the end? Astronomers have noticed it is coming. Historians have noted its significance. In 2014 and 2015, there will be a phenomenon in the skies of four blood moons falling during Jewish feasts. This has only happened three times in recorded history: 1493-94, 1949-50 and 1967-68. Prophecy expert Mark Hitchcock guides you through the relevant Bible passages so you can understand the times in which you live."
Based on this description, I expected it to be a pro-blood-moons prophecy book, so I was pleasantly surprised that much of it was a rebuttal against the "blood moons theory". The publisher made the description a bit misleading, whether accidentally or on purpose, because it doesn't sound like it will be against the blood moons prophecy. I don't love reading "end times prophecy" books because Jesus said that no one knows when the "last day" will be and it will come as a surprise to all, but this one at least takes down another faddish theory that is out there today. I'd like to point out that where the description says "these years of the four blood moons have truly been turning points in history" - well, not really. Two episodes of four blood moons have had ZERO events associated with them (but no one ever mentions those and completely ignores them), and the other "significant events" are stretched to the point of incredulity as they occurred up to 6-12 months outside of the time of the blood moons. But this book might be a good tool to help you deal with the people spouting the "blood moons prophecy".
Blood moons rising is written to counter numerous books that have been written on the subject of complete lunar eclipses aka a blood moon. I was worried at first that the book may have been written in a way that would go over my head as Hitchcock stated that he was a lawyer and will write like a lawyer; who knew a lawyer writes in such a understanding and in-depth way. I could not put the book down! this book is so well written that Hitchcock completely debunks what the other writers of similar book state as prophesies can not possible be end time prophesies. even thought this book it a rebuttal to other books on the 4 blood moons of 2014-2015 Hitchcock never once put down the other authors for what they have written. Hitchcock, using what he has learned as a lawyer went through each element of the 'blood moon prophesies' so that you can truly understand what prophesises are talked about and what is a blood moon etc. this leaves you to come to your own conclusion, with full understanding. I have previously bought one of the books Hitchcock is writing about, but after reading this I can not see how the other author could possible convince me that the ' 4 blood moon prophesies' are true end time prophesies; this being the case I will still read that book to hear his views and how he came to these. also Hitchcock has in chapter 3 written a in-depth yet clearer than anything I have ever read on the end times. Hitchcock goes through each element that has been prophesised in Revelations, Isiah, Daniel and other books of the bible. He tell of each prophesy in order of which they are supposed to come, explains how his prophesy is to be filled and what it entails, backing each statement with Biblical verses. if you or anyone you know that is interested or has ever wondered what the end times/ revelations is all about; read this book, all will become clear to a point where you yourself would be able to tell others what is to come for the time is close, too many main prophesies have already come to pass, we are in the latter days. we are in the end times.
Blood Moons Rising is another suspenseful must-read for this summer. In this book, the author explains to his readers about biblical prophecy concerning Israel, their history, and what Israel has to do with the four blood moons that are expected to take place in 2014 and 2015. The author teaches its readers about what the Bible says about the end times and what those last days may be like. He, then, compares the biblical prophecies to stories that were printed in newspapers and why they point to these days as the precursor to the end times and the importance of Christians to be paying attention to the things we read in the newspaper or watch on news channels. The author also explains what the blood moons are and their significance to the last days and where they are mentioned in the bible. Though this book was interesting, I also found it to be a little chilling because with all the facts presented in the book, it seems as if the last days are not far from occurring and there are so many people who have either not heard of Jesus and His salvation, but also those who reject. Reading this book has helped stress the point that Christians need to take the news seriously and use the more frequently occurring disasters as a motivation to make Jesus’s name known.
When I heard about Blood Moons, I was pretty confused. This was not something I remembered in my Bible. However, if it was and I had missed it, that would be important. Especially since it could have been due to my lack of specific knowledge of Jewish traditions in these instances. I looked for a book that would critically analyze the claims. I had seen the blood moon claims and they seemed to be non-scriptural and lacked critical logic. I came across this book and read it (in addition to the other books). By far, this analysis is spot on. This book lays out the claims, the history behind the claims, the scripture (or lack there of) that backs up the claim, and then lets you decide for yourself. It is a critical analysis of the situation (something I appreciate, being an analyst by trade) and is very well written.
If you are looking for an honest look at the issue of blood moons, this book is a must-read.
I feel this book is well written and that the Biblical view of the significance of having the upcoming four blood moons is well presented. The work is intelligently written and organized with several appropriate references to help the reader locate where the information comes from. I would recommend this book to those with an interest in Biblical prophecy or just a curiosity about the blood moons both in history and our future. I received an evaluation copy through Tyndale publishers in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion, which may differ from your own. No compensation beyond the single copy has been accepted. Read more reviews and find your next favorite book, or win your own copy of a book or a kindle fire on my blog.
I got this book free from Tyndale because of their summer reading program. I am so glad I picked this book! At first I was thinking it was going to go on and on about the end of times for 2014-2015 but its not. It talks about the Blood Moons and what has happened in the past during and after a blood moon. What I really loved about this book was that Mark Hitchcock is telling the reader to not look or listen to someone that says the world is going to end on a given date, because no one knows the hour or minute. That we need to keep our eyes on Jesus at all times and we need to be ready every day, every min of each day.
I love a good look at prophecy, especially when it correlates with current events. I think most people are interested in the four blood moons that are taking place this year and next. This is the last blood moon tetrad that is to occur during this century. Hitchcock shares in his book how previous tetrads have occurred during Jewish feast days and how significant things happened to the Jewish state of Israel during those blood moon years. http://jamiswords.blogspot.com/2014/0...
I read this book a bit after the fact since it deals with rebutting the belief that blood moons appearing in 2014/2015 means something is going to happen regarding end times, Israel, and/or the United States. However, I did think it was good to read to help enforce the point of looking at the verses around the verse one is using to support one's view and even looking at the words around the word one is using to support one's view. The author does a good job explaining and supporting his view regarding the falsehood of the alleged blood moons prophesy.
The whole earth will lie in darkness. I watched the April 2014 total lunar eclipse and it wasn't a global event. The three yet to occur in 2014 and 2015 will not be viewable globally. Tribulation has not started. There are many books and movies based on end times, some based on fact. This book is readable and nonfiction.
I was impressed by this book that it broke down the Blood Moons prophecy with the Bible and history. The author does not give the Blood Moons prophecy a pass but a biblical overview and finds it can't align with truth. Good book!
As with all things, discernment is needed to go through some of the headline books today. Great points and discussion in order to make a decision as to what is real and what is not.
Great handling of the subject, grounded and realistic based on sound prophetic interpretation. Without sensationalism of others that write on this topic.
Mark Hitchcock holds a non-alarmist perspective in regards to the Blood Moon Prophecy, which is unlike many the proponents hold in regards to the phenomenon.
very interesting book relating the Blood Moons Prophecy to current world events. I never knew much about the Blood Moons before reading the book but I found the book very informative and fascinating. I also enjoyed it because it was not a super long novel either. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has a fascination with end-times prophecy and Apocalypse type stuff. I'll tell you one thing, after reading this book I will be paying a lot more attention to the sky now. I will give this book a 4/5 stars because I did thoroughly enjoy it even if it was not my favorite book of all time. Definitely informative...
In the wee hours this morning, April 15th, 2015, my daughter Amy, 12, and I sat bundled under the stars gazing at the moon. The rest of the family got up at 2:15, looked at the moon, and went back to bed. Amy and I chose to relish the moment and cherish the memory were were making as we shivered and cuddled together. Our cat, Tiger, decided he wanted to be in on it, too, so he snuggled in, too.
As we watched the first of the four blood moons, we prayed, I sang soft praises, and we interceded for the peace of Israel. Around 3:30, as we prepared to go to bed, I told her to think about what she saw, what she felt, what she heard, all to make the memory permanent. She went to bed, I added wood to the fire, and went to take one more look. The moon had moved and changed. Since we could now see the moon from the kitchen window, I got Amy out of bed. I explained to her what an eclipse is, and as the moon began to show white again, why and how it was happening. In her excitement, she drew pictures and labeled them to show the phases of the eclipse that we'd witnessed.
I heard about the Four Blood Moons early this year by watching a sermon series by Pastor John Hagee. He believes that the heavens are God's billboard and that something big is about to change. I read his book, Four Blood Moons. I enjoyed it, but it was a bit academic for me. Mind you, I've not read very many books about prophecy.
Blood Moons Rising is Pastor Mark Hitchcock's answer to Four Blood Moons. Pastor Hitchcock has a gift for taking a very complex subject, Biblical prophecy, and breaking it down into language that I can understand easily. His writing is very clear and concise. He is writing for the average person who wants to understand just what all the talk about the Blood Moons is about.
In the first few chapters, Hitchcock lays a foundation with a very thorough explanation of Biblical prophecy. He includes timelines of the expected order of prophecies yet to be fulfilled. Beginning in chapter 6, Moonshine: Signs in the Heavens, Hitchcock begins to look directly at the four moons prophecy. In his words, "I believe that reading Genesis 1:14 as implying that God uses the heavens as "high-definition billboards" to send messages to humanity is overstating what that verse says." (p.95) The remainder of the book addresses the reasons that he does not agree with the blood moons prophecy and what he believes about the end times. He explains the feasts, the biblical prophecies and the historical situations at the time of the previous tetrads (sets of four blood moons). He is very thorough. Hitchcock doesn't believe the blood moons have anything to do with any big change coming. He believes the that the scriptures that Pastor Hagee sites are about the tribulation. He is respectful in his writing.
Who's right? Hagee or Hitchcock? I don't know. I learned a lot from this book, but I'm no expert on prophecy. Fortunately, I know who is. God our Creator, my God. I trust Him with my future. Ultimately, this is Hitchcock's point. He emphasizes the need to be prepared no matter when the Lord comes. He sums it up this way, "First Peter 4:7-11 tells us that as we await the Lord's coming, we need to do four things: keep our heads clear, our hearts warm, our homes open, and our hands busy." That's something I can agree with. So tell me, are you ready?
