I've never done a terribly stellar job of teaching civics and local government, so I decided to get a head start on researching some texts I could use in class next year. I enjoyed this book, and I know my kids will appreciate that the captions tell exactly which city the action is happening in ("These people are voting in a San Francisco fire department"). Those kinds of details matter to them.
Many teachers say they struggle teaching math because they don't have much experience with high-quality instruction in math. I can say the same thing for myself regarding social studies. For example, in this book alone I learned A) Why elections are in November, B) Why elections are on Tuesday, and C) THAT NATIVE AMERICANS COULDN'T VOTE UNTIL 1924?!?!?!?!?!
I'll definitely be adding this to my book box next year.
