The Curse Breakers is book two in The Curse Keepers series by Denise Grover Swank. I have repeatedly admitted to my fandom of this author and this book most definitely did not disappoint me. It has everything, sweet romance, snarkiness, mythology, and heart stopping suspense and action.

Ellie Lancaster is a Curse Keeper. She is known as Daughter of the Sea. She gets her power from the sea. The other Curse Keeper is Collin Dailey, Son of the Land. Ellie and Collins’s souls are bound and maybe even their hearts, but Ellie cannot trust Collin. He has betrayed her at every step of the way. It was his fault that the demons are now running wild, gaining in strength. It is his fault her father is now dead. It is his fault she has a virtual bull’s-eye painted on her back. She is all alone now and she has to find a way to send the demons back, to save not only those she loves but all of humanity. But how will she do it? Collin won’t give her any information that will help her. The evil Okeus wants her to pledge herself to him and the God Ahone has also claimed her but he won’t give Ellie his symbol so she can protect herself. She has never felt more alone.

 photo tumblr_muu9r77Eak1qft4nwo5_500_zpseeae26e0.jpg

On a fact finding mission she meets Dr. David Preston, professor of Native American Studies. At first David will have nothing to do with Ellie, mistaking her for another hormonal student trying to get into his class. But when he meets her again at her family’s Bed and Breakfast when he has come to investigate the reappearance of the Lost Colony, he realizes how deeply she is involved in everything that has been going on and agrees to help her. David is a good man. Can Ellie allow him to become involved with all this danger? Can she protect him? After what Collin did can she let someone else into her heart?

Ellie is one of those people that you could say that if she didn’t have bad luck, she would have no luck at all. So many times throughout this book I was praying for at least something to finally go right for her. Even with David’s help, she can’t find the answers she needs. Collin is no help. And along with all the demons after her, there are also some very bad men who want her as well, thinking she has information they want. And then there is Tom, a very persistent police officer that is trying to put it all together. He knows Ellie is involved, that she is in danger, and won’t let up his efforts to get her to talk to him.

So if you love a little bit of history, mythology, romance, and suspense, this is the series for you. It has it all. Thank you to Denise Grover Swank, 47 North and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book. I truly loved it and can’t wait to see what is next for Ellie. Denise, by now I think you know that I will follow you anywhere.

Warning: If you have not read the first book in the series, this review contains spoilers! You have been warned.

A substantial improvement from the first book. Ellie has her act more together in this book. She is actively looking for answers on her own. Her attitude in the first book about drove me batty but here she is more realistic in what she is doing.

She is still pissed at Collin for his betrayal, yet still drawn to him. Honestly, what she sees in him, I have no idea. Sexy good looks does not make up for a lousy, lying, manipulative personality. In addition this book introduces another potential romance for Ellie. While normally I am not a fan of love triangles, this one makes some sense at least.

The police officer Tom is a much more active role in this book. He wants to help Ellie but is also determined to get the truth. Then there is David (her new interest), who holds lots of knowledge and resources to point Ellie in the right direction.

The plot thickens as Marino steps up his game, spirits want to kill her out of vengeance and Okeaus has some sinister plan afoot and Ahone is silent and unhelpful. What is a girl to do?

I enjoyed this one so much more than the first. I love how the author is tying everything together and it has me most curious for the end results. This book is much more plot focused which I appreciate.

Well…what can I say besides: I can’t even force myself to finish this book!

I liked the first one. The story and the idea are really good. Unfortunately ‘The Curse Breakers’ was a disappointment and a serious struggle for me. The first 50% of the book are basically a recap of book 1. That’s it- plain and simple. The writing style is okay, the characters are likable…However I was waiting for something interesting to happen (for hours)…It didn’t!!! So I’m giving up…

*SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE CURSE KEEPERS AND THIS PLACE IS DEATH!*

I have to preface this by saying that while I like paranormal romance, it's not something I seek out. The thing is, I used to love them. I think I just got burnt out on paranormal because everything seemed to have the same old theme. I love a good vampire story as much as the next girl, but there just seems to be only so many ways you can vary the story.

That's why this series by Denise Grover Swank is so refreshing. It's completely original. I've never heard of another book referencing the Lost Colony, and the Native American mythology was completely new to me. While I'm not as big a history geek as my beloved husband, I do love mythology of all types. This kind of stuff fascinates me, and I can tell DGS really does her research. It actually makes me want to do some googling and see what I can find out about these Native American gods.

This book is the second in The Curse Keepers series, which is sure to be an intricate and action-packed mystery/romance series. I'm not sure how many books DGS has planned for this series, but I can totally see her adding at least two more. I don't see how she can wrap this up in one more book! One of the reasons I love DGS is her ability to include several genres into the same book (see the Rose Gardner mystery series). A romance is a romance, but this series gives you romance PLUS history, mythology, mystery, horror and drama. There's a lot going on, but it's not overwhelming.

In the first book, The Curse Keepers, we are introduced to Ellie and Collin and a few supporting characters that I love. Ellie tugged at my heartstrings right away. She's working her tail off as a waitress while trying to help her step-mother take care of her father with Alzheimers and an inn that has been in the family for generations. She's worn out. I felt for her and cheered for her and really wanted to slap her a couple of times for giving so much trust to Collin. Collin is such a jerk at times, but there are glimpses of a possibly good heart underneath all that. Until the end, of course, when he tricks Ellie into opening the gate to hell which results in her father's sacrifice of himself to close it. I'm heart-broken for Ellie, and actually a little for Collin as well. As much as he has infuriated me throughout the book, I know he loves Ellie as much as he knows how, and he knows he's royally screwed up. It's not a happy ending.

We begin The Curse Breakers not too long after that fateful night. Ellie knows she's a target for the evil spirits that have been loosed from hell. She's desperate for help, but not so desperate she will turn to Collin for help. Yes, it's prideful, but I totally don't blame her. The magical (and physical) draw towards him is still there, but what has happened just makes it impossible to go forward. Collin doesn't do himself any favors in that he is still keeping secrets. When are heroes going to learn that keeping secrets to protect the little woman just makes that woman angry. Really.

In an effort to get as much help as she can Ellie connects with Dr. David Preston, a university professor and expert in Native American studies. Yes! I am now in book-love with David. Does it hurt that he has a British accent? Of course not! (I totally hear Paul Bettany in my head when he's speaking. Jude Law will work, too, but Paul is my go-to British love.) What I love the most about David is he recognizes that he is not the protector in the relationship. He is a partner and supporter. While he's not a curse keeper and therefore doesn't have any supernatural power, he is of great help to Ellie. Their relationship grows slowly into a solid friendship. And maybe more? You'll just have to read it to find out!

While Claire and Drew have a lesser role in this book than the last, I love that they are so there for Ellie. Claire is a best friend that anyone would want. You don't have underlying jealousies there. They truly love each other as sisters and support each other. Again, Claire has no supernatural powers, but she is a great encourager to Ellie. She is essential. I love that Myra has a bit more of a role in this book. You get to really see how strong the bond is between Ellie and Myra. I feel better for Ellie's childhood knowing that she had Myra after losing her mom at such a young age and in such a horrible way.

Which brings us to the mystery. Or should I say mysterIES. Wow. There's a whole bunch and it's just starting to tie together in this book. Ellie's mom's murder, which she is dreaming and remembering differently than how she's been told it happened; the Ricardo deal, which Collin still won't talk to Ellie about (cue frustration); the real reason for the curse and the agenda of the gods. Yikes. I feel like I need to keep a diagram or chart of all that's going on so I can connect it all as I read. But, like I said, it's not overwhelming. It's engrossing. I couldn't put this book down, and it wasn't because of romance. It was totally because of the mystery aspect. I finished at 1:45 a.m. and woke up at 6:30 still thinking about what it all means. What is the reason for the curse in the first place? Why did Ahone help Manteo and Ananias do this? What will happen now that the gate is opened? Will they be able to stop the spirits? Should they? What does the Ricardo deal have to do with everything and what involvement in that deal did Ellie's father and mother have? What really happened the night Ellie's mom was murdered, and why was her murderer after Ellie? What will happen with Ellie and Collin and David, and how does "fate" play into it.

I have an idea, of course, about all of this. But I'm so going to enjoy reading the rest of the series to find out if I'm right. In my experience with DGS, she tends to blow my theories out of the water and give me something unexpected. And that's fine by me! Whether things work out the way I think they will or the way I hope they will, I'm sure I'll be happy with it in the end. I highly recommend this series. You won't be disappointed!

Really glad I picked up book 2 because I wasn't sure I was going to be able to read a second book with Ellie all over the place but thankfully she starts getting her shit together and grows up a bit more which was why the curse breakers was a much more enjoyable read and I will happily read book 3.

I enjoyed this installment marginally more than Book 1, mostly because the plot took precedence over Ellie's un-romantic romance with the insufferable Collin. The new male lead -- I guess there has to be one, because Ellie just can't help herself, in more than once sense of the phrase -- is professor David, who initially comes off as equally arrogant and insufferable. His redeeming qualities start to shine through soon enough, though I remain unconvinced by their too-soon mutual declarations of loyalty and eschewal of condoms. I'm not sure why he's English, however, because it just seems like the author wanted an excuse to have a character say "bloody" and "wanker" and declare that his favorite childhood food was spotted dick.

Which reminds me -- there are not one but two separate rape threat scenes in this book. Three (or four!) if you count the abortive sex scenes with Collin. Women face the threat of rape in real life at an alarming rate, but in this novel it just seems like lazy writing, an easy way to up the stakes.

I did start to like Ellie again; she show more backbone here, as she grows into and learns more about her role as Curse Keeper. I wish we'd seen more of her network of friends and family as well, in addition to, or perhaps instead of, the expanding cast of Croatoan gods and spirits, who at best require willful blindness about real-life Native Americans and Native American beliefs, and at worst are just offensive. At least there were more scenes set at the site of the "discovered" Lost Colony of Roanoke, and more stuff with cool artifacts such as the watches.

After reading these two installments, I'm sorry to say I will not be reading Book 3. I'm not interested enough in the outcome of the supernatural plot line to wade through the tangled threads of not one but two romantic relationships that I'm not enjoying, much less slog through boring writing.

ETA: Because I enjoyed this marginally more than Book 1, but still not enough to rate higher than 2 stars for "It Was Okay", I'm actually lowering my rating to 1 star for Book 1. Just in case anyone happens upon my reviews and wonders why I'd bother reading a sequel to a book that I did not like! Plus...

I received [a personal invite to access] an ARC of this book via NetGalley.

ETA2: Ugh, I just can't in good conscience rate this higher than 1 star. I did not like it at all.

I was in complete turmoil all the way through this book...Don't get me wrong...It was a great book...It is just that what transpired in the pages of this book kept my stomach in knots...
Now, while I understood Ellie's anger and distrust toward Collin, I still really like him. But this is kind of jumping ahead...
Ok...there is so much to this story. Action-packed, filled with suspense; I was holding my breath the whole time waiting to see just what was going to happen to this little firecracker of a curse breaker known as Ellie.
She learns so much more in this book and there are pieces starting to come together. *sighs* Still, there are so many holes to fill to solve the dilemmas in her life though.
But, she has enlisted the help of a young good-looking college professor that specializes in the legend and lore of her problems and this is where the whirlwind of excitement begins to take off.
Now, while I like the new guy, my heart was already given to Collin. Yes...I am taking sides and I am #TeamCollin all the way...LOL!! I can't help but feel that the chemistry between Collin and Ellie is hotter and much more explosive...But...I will say...David is a great match for Ellie...I just don't FEEL the connection...
The Curse Breakers is a fabulous second installment. I literally couldn't put it down because so much happens to keep you going until you reach the very end...
All I can say now is...When does book 3 come out??? Ahhhhh....I need more!!!!
Fantastic series, that if you haven't started it yet...pick up book one now...

Great follow-up to the Curse Keepers.

This installment takes place right after the events of the Curse Keepers. And although Collin and Ellie managed to close the gate, unfortunately it wasn't enough. Ellie is in even more danger than before, both from the angry gods and also from Marino. Yes, he's still around, and yes, he still wants Ellie. Combine all of the above with the fact that Tom won't leave Ellie alone. He knows that there's something bigger going on and all of it has ties to Ellie, so not only is he hounding her every chance he gets, he's also threatening to put her in jail for not being completely forthcoming with anything she knows.

All of the characters from the previous books continue on in this one, with the exception of Ellie's father. She and Myra are still grieving his loss and Ellie needs him more than ever because of the serious turn the curse has taken. There was a new character introduced, Dr. David Preston, who agrees to start helping Ellie. I didn't like him very much, if at all. For being a professor of Native American history, he sure didn't know much. And I found him to be an uptight stick-in-the mud with his reading spectacles and his "spotted dick". Dude, spotted dick isn't that rare. Sure, it's funny, but it's also available in most grocery stores and manufactured by Heinz. I just didn't like the staunch bastard and really missed Collin. At least he was exciting, but I guess now Ellie has a "safe" option when it comes to suitors.

As far as the curse - Ellie now has to make a choice. Okeus and Ahone are demanding she does, one more than the other. I was glad to see one of the gods be a bit more frightening. So far, all of the gods and spirits that knock on Ellie's door have been quite laughable. I started disbelieving the severity of their malice and anger because they never came across as such.

One aspect I really liked was in this installment vs the previous, Ellie has the upper hand over Collin. She knows more than he does this time around, and I really liked the fact that she is now taking the curse a bit more seriously.

Once again, the ending is cliffhangerish. Still many unanswered questions, which I'm sure will be answered in the next book, The Curse Defiers. Really looking forward to that one and I hope there's more Collin.

Review Courtesy All Things Urban Fantasy

When I finished the first book of The Curse Keepers series, I was on the fence about whether or not I was going to continue. When I saw THE CURSE BREAKERS come up on the review list, though, I picked it up without hesitation. For all my meh about the first book, I was intrigued about where the plot would go to pick it back up.

THE CURSE BREAKERS does a good job for a second book of jumping into the story while at the same time reminding the reader what came before it. I didn’t have any problem picking up the threads of The Curse Keepers and remembering what I liked, and didn’t like about it. What I liked most is that it wasn’t all dumped on me in the first few pages. She did a good job of reminding me about what I needed when I needed it instead of all at once. That kept the story flowing well and allowed me to get into the current story. Which, I have to say, was much more enjoyable this time – from the gods to the mystery around Ellie’s fight for good.

I will say that I enjoyed Ellie a lot more in THE CURSE BREAKERS. She was much more focused on her curse and the seemingly never-ending piles of crap and lies heaped onto her than she was about her glands. It was a refreshing change and really helped me to see her more as a heroine bent on doing the right thing while keeping her loved ones, and even complete strangers, safe. I really felt for her and everything she faced.

The new character addition of David was both welcome and not so much. Welcome because he was delightful – especially when compared to Collin. The not-so-much because he represented a descent into triangle-dom, a plot device I’m over in the worst way. I will say this for THE CURSE BREAKERS, though; the triangle didn’t follow the conventional “Team” angle. And, no, I won’t elaborate for fear of descending into spoilers.

The third and final is out in November and I’m definitely on board for the conclusion. With the ramp up of the mystery and the positive changes in Ellie, I’ll not only be reading, but pouncing on it.

4.5/5 stars

After having read and loved the first book in the Curse Keepers series, I was so happy to get a copy of this second book for review. It's been awhile since I've read the first, so I was afraid that I would be fuzzy on the details of the first book, but Denise has done a wonderful job of filling you in as to the events that happened at the end of the first book and she has done so where it didn't feel repetitive or like information overload.

Pacing: It was so easy jumping back into Ellie's world, so I am really glad I didn't spend the first part of the book trying to recall what happened previously. I feel Denise did a great job with this second novel. She wastes no time in picking back up where we left off and I was so heartbroken for Ellie and everything she's gone through.

Storyline: When we first meet Ellie again, she is a mess. Betrayed, heartbroken, angry, and hurt- she is struggling to deal with the aftermath of what happened at the end of the previous novel. She has gained the attention of Tom Helmsworth, police officer and old high school classmate, and he is not only concerned about her, but is far too curious about the events that are transpiring in Manteo. He isn't stupid and knows Ellie has a connection to everything that's going on, but doesn't have proof. Tom, while not a bad guy, just doesn't understand that there are supernatural forces at work and Ellie cannot divulge that kind of information to him. Not only is Tom nosing around, but she also has angry spirits that are after her now that the Curse has been broken and the gates of hell opened. Seeking out Collin Dailey for help is the last thing Ellie wants and will hold out as long as she is able to. I just felt so much for Ellie in this book. After having lost someone very dear to her, she is trying to get by the best she can, but she also is in great danger. She has one god who wants her for his own selfish purposes and won't give up until he has her. While the other has also claimed her, he is not going out of his way to help her- instead she must make the journey on her own. Time is running out for Ellie and she has to make her decision quickly... before it's too late. She seeks the help of Dr. David Preston, a professor of Native American studies. After casting her off as a crazy person, their paths meet again in Manteo and he can't deny the overwhelming urge to find out more. However, David ends up being a true ally to Ellie and ultimately someone she can trust and depend on. This second novel has a bit of everything: mystery, romance, suspense, and action. And of course- more Native American lore, which I really loved reading about!

Characters: As I said earlier, Ellie is a mess right now. Yet, she is still as determined as ever. Not once did she just say the hell with it and want to give up. She is in danger on multiple fronts and has to protect herself. One of the things I loved about Ellie before was her compassion for others. She will risk her own life to protect others and that is what makes her such a likeable heroine. She is sassy and snarky, and after being betrayed by the one person she needed most, she is determined to stay strong. She has moments of weakness where Collin is concerned, as she can't deny the connection they share, but she still manages to call him out on everything that's happened. You go girl!

Collin. Insert really angry face here. I want to know what his deal is. As much as I want to hate him for everything, I just can't. And my heart is torn. What he and Ellie have is electric and they share a connection that no one will ever be able to touch. Yet, Collin's selfishness and his refusal to confide in Ellie are what separate the two even further. Ellie doesn't trust him and without trust, there's just no way the two can be together. Collin will confuse you and then surprise you with his actions and I was left feeling really undecided about how I felt about his character.

I am not a fan of love triangles, but I have to say I really liked David's character. I'm unsure of the direction Denise will take their relationship in the third book, but he is exactly what Ellie needed NOW. She needs someone to care for her and treat her as an equal in all things and that is David. He's also really sexy and British, which is always a plus too!

Final Thoughts: The Curse Breakers was an excellent second novel and I cannot recommend this series enough, especially if you are an urban fantasy New Adult lover! The odds are against Ellie and the fight is on to ensure Okeus does not succeed in his maniacal plans for her. I have a feeling the next book will be an edge of your seat type of read, as Ellie continues her battle against the ancient spirits that have been unleashed and want to steal her life force.

Wow, I loved The Curse Breakers even more than Curse Keepers!
Starts off a little after the Curse Keepers ended, the emotional pulls the character have on your heart are so strong.
Ellie continues on a long journey to try to make things right by sending the monsters back to hell for good. In her journey she has so many obstacles but she has someone to help her.
Some complain on the situations of possible rape that almost happen. Yes some complain in reviews that this is horrible but also this is not the author condoning this. This is fiction, this is not real. I’ve read a couple books that the authors think rape is a turn on which sickens me.
No this author portrays the horror of almost being raped and how Ellie is a fighter and survivor time and again. This is part of Ellie’s character and the story.
This book will have you on the edge of your seat and I am rushing to finish this review so that I can keep reading the next book!

*My Thoughts*

The Curse Breakers picks up several weeks after the end of The Curse Keepers. 23-year old Ellie Dare Lancaster is still coming to an understanding about what it means for her to be one of two Curse Keepers and also a very unique soul who has never been recycled, and who witnessed the creation of the universe.

Ellie experienced the painful loss of her father, and unwittingly helped Collin Daily open the gates to Popogusso because she wrongly trusted him to guide her in what it means to be a Curse Keeper. Now, demons, and "good" spirits are running around killing animals to take away their Manitou, and taunting her every night in her dreams and awakened state. They demand that she make a choice between Okeus (who has already marked her as his), and the mysterious Ahone who apparently is a devious as he is secretive.

I will say this for The Curse Breakers, I liked the addition of Dr. David Preston and the fact that he helps Ellie uncover hidden secrets. I liked how he and Ellie interact, and was happy that they didn't just automatically jump into bed right off the bat. I liked how there was a trust factor (I hope!) that wasn't there between Ellie and Collin Daily, and really, really hope that Swank doesn't shove a dagger into my heart by doing something shocking like betraying Ellie yet again.

I still have questions, of course, in regards to Ellie's mothers death. What really happened that day? Why was the killer specifically looking for Ellie? Why did her father hold on to so many different secrets including the Ricardo Estate's disappearance, and the expectation that Ellie would just understand her role as Curse Keeper with Okeus and Ahone playing mind games with her?

You could, in a way, twist The Curse Keepers into being a historical paranormal romance series set in modern times instead of what the author is calling Urban Fantasy. Especially since the story remains focused on the factual Lost Colony of Roanoke, the curse between Ananias Dare and Croatan Indian Manteo, and the fact that there is plenty of romance and sex scenes to carry readers through some slower times.

I need to say this though, I am absolutely nervous when Swank writes scenes that take Ellie to the brink of being violated. I just wish this wasn't necessary in any form, but will probably go to my grave knowing that my bucket list will never be completed. That is, the complete removal of rape, incest, and child abuse from all future novels, & TV shows.

I have one little complaint about the story that will probably have everyone rolling their eyes at me. So, you just lost your husband of X many years, and all of a sudden you are rushing head first into another relationship because you and he may, or may not have had a connection in the past? Huh, uhm, no. Just no.

I will say that I am happy that Swank has given Ellie some very supportive secondary characters like her best friend Claire, and her step-mother Myra. I haven't come to a conclusion yet about Police Officer Tom who seems intent to protect Ellie from herself. I do look forward to the next installment, and am anxious as to what happens to Ellie, David, and Collin next.

Ellie is back, Collin is back, and their soul bond is still there, but wait until you meet David! Ellie, Daughter of the Sea and Collin, Son of the Land had a sacred duty to uphold, one that was handed down through the generations, keep the demons of hell from entering the human realm, deceived by Collin, Ellie inadvertently aided in the escape of several demons who are threatening not only the world, but Ellie’s life and the lives of those she cares about. David is a professor who is well-versed in Native American folklore and has come to see the phenomena that is the re-appearance of the Roanoke Colony. Does the secret to saving the world and banishing the demons lie within this long lost town or in the words that Ellie’s father tried to tell her so long ago before his death. Animals are mutilated, people are dying and Ellie is the common denominator, does this also make her a suspect? Who would believe her if she told the authorities what she knows?

In a battle of good vs evil, Ellie has two gods who want her, but to give in would seal the fate of the world. Can she accept David’s help and risk his life? Can she accept there is more between them than ancient legends? With her heart and life on the line, Ellie is a formidable foe who just needs a break and for things to go her way.

Denise Grover Swank has hit another one out of the ballpark! The Curse Breakers, book two in The Curse Keeper Series took book one and exploded upon it in waves! Picking up where The Curse Keepers left off, the turmoil is ratcheted up a few notches as well as the tale itself! With tidbits of back story thrown in seamlessly, the danger to the world and to Ellie is now off the charts. The best part? Ellie is now determined, matured and willing to seek out help from any source she can. To say Ellie is now an ally you would definitely want on your side would be an understatement! Ms. Swank has tossed in sturdy characters that feel so realistic, with real emotions, agendas and their own determination makes this one fascinating read, filled with plots, subplots and sub-subplots that spider out from the main storyline like a shattered windshield. She writes with a sense of tension and excitement that pulls like a magnet on fire. With never a wasted word, action or scene, from start to finish The Curse Breakers is a wild ride into fantasy, myths and legends as the human realm and the spirit realms collide with often unspeakable horror.

I was super excited to read the second book in the Curse Keepers series. I loved the first book. I thought it was so unique. How many times do you get to read a book about ancient Algonquin spirits that are tied together with the reappearance with the lost colony of Roanoke. This is the second series that I have read about the Roanoke colony and it is still a unique subject to me because both series are so different. (Roanoke Vanishing by Auburn Seal is great as well.) I absolutely loved the Curse Keepers. I thought it was fast paced and fascinating. I really enjoyed the second book as well, but it was slower paced than the first one. I thought The Curse Breakers was great in terms of the supernatural mystery as well as the ties with the actual mystery with Meriano's men. But in terms of actual plot advancement it dragged a bit.

Ellie dealt with that awful betrayal and loss of her father in the end of the first book, so she is a little less trustful in this installment, and more than a little hurt. I really felt for her. She is still in the thick of this curse, and she is in constant danger at night. It has to be a lot to deal with all alone. Colin is in this book a lot less. I have a feeling that will change more in the next book, but because of certain events in the story he didn't have nearly as much page time. Ellie doesn't know who to turn to, but she needs to figure out a way to put Ahone's symbol on her so that she will be protected by him. So she seeks out a young professor who is an expert in Native American's. He became a much bigger character in the book than I was expecting after their first, rather rude, meeting.

I was really glad that David became so important in Ellie's quest, because he turned out to be such a sweetheart. And very helpful. I can't imagine having to go through this big bad scary all alone like Ellie, so it was nice to see someone there for her- helping her out. I'm still not sure where I fall in the whole Collin v. David situation, but that is something that I will defer my opinion on until the next book.

The Curse Keepers series is a really interesting series. One that I enjoy and will continue to read. The Curse Breakers was a good installment, but it did suffer a bit from second book syndrome in terms of pacing. It just dragged and felt a little boring in places. But the overall mystery answers and advancements were great. It was a good book in a great series, but it wasn't as good as the first one, which I completely loved. Still very much worth a read if you enjoy paranormal books and are interested in the Lost Colony of Roanoke.

The Curse Breakers picks up right where The Curse Keepers left off. Ellie is left to deal with the consequences of Collin's actions. With Collin now out of the picture, Ellie is forced to figure out how to deal with the spirits on her own. As the spirits start wreaking havoc on the town, Ellie is desperately trying to discover Ahone's mark. Her time is running out and it's her only shot at protection.......Ellie seeks help from a college professor, David, who specializes in Native American studies. At first David doesn't want to help her out, but as fate or luck would have it, David ends up in right in Ellie's backyard. His curiosity gives Ellie hope that she may not have to do this alone. Together they will try to figure out the mystery about the curse and hopefully put an end to things.......

The Curse Breakers takes you on one heck of a thrill ride. There was never a dull moment. The Curse Breakers took you further and further into the mystery. Just when you think you finally got some answers, you were given more questions.

We didn't really see a lot of Collin this time around, but what we did see, left quite the impact. I'm still frustrated with him for his actions in The Curse Breakers and I don't fully trust him. But, I do think that he really does love Ellie and I couldn't help feeling sorry for him. I'm hopeful that he will get a chance to redeem himself in the next book.

David was a great addition to the story. Not only did he prove to be helpful to Ellie, but he genuinely seems to care for her and is willing to protect her no matter what. I think that he was just what Ellie needed, but I do feel that he's only going to get his heart broken.

Ellie.....What can I say?? She is still so stubborn. But, I was glad to see that she wasn't going to give up. The odds were definitely against her and for once I think her stubbornness worked well. She goes through a lot in The Curse Breakers and I felt by the end of the book that her character had grown so much!

The Curse Breakers is definitely an exciting sequel. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, trying to unravel the mystery. I am still left with so many questions, especially about the Ricardo Deal. I can't wait to see how everything comes together and I'm looking forward to the final showdown with Okeus!

I was skeptical of the first book but thought I should try something I am not used to reading. I LOVED THIS SECOND BOOK! It got smart! The addition of this professor who not only is a hottie but really knows his history is exciting and somehow makes this story more believable. Ellie is a great man character and I enjoy going through her struggles as she tries to find her way in this new universe and new normal after meeting Collin.

I felt the writing here was lacking compared to the first book. I may be remembering the first one wrong, but here the dialogue especially just felt incredibly cheesy compared to its predecessor. I was also hoping since Collin and Ellie broke up, there would be little romance but of course we had to squeeze that in there. I felt that was unnecessary, but I definitely like David more than Collin. Collin always gave off this creepy vibe, which didn't go away in this book, and David seems to genuinely care about Ellie. My only problem is he has no reason to and everything is chalked up to fate. Personally, I think that's a lame excuse not to write in legitimate character bonding.

The action was god and kept me going, but this still felt like a filler book, as the second of a trilogy often does. We learn a bit more about what's going on, but not enough to spoil what's going to happen in book three. This one was all about finding the mark of Ahone, which alone sounds pretty dull. However, a lot of terrifying things still happen. There are still murders of animals and humans alike, and of course Ellie is at the center of all of it. My only complaint would be the attempted rape scenes. Yes, scenes. Plural. There is a time and place for that sort of plot and this was not it. That alone knocked off a star.

I'm not very knowledgeable on Native American legends and religions, so I don't know how accurate that is in here, but I must admit this series is making me curious.

Overall, I think this would be a great book in the right hands. I have a few friends in mind who would absolutely love this series. So there isn't anything particularly wrong (with the exception of the attempted rape scenes), but I'm clearly not the intended audience. Despite this, I'm still curious enough to read book three and will do so in the near future.

(as a personal note, I found it very weird that Ellie referred to her father as "Daddy" to everyone. I understand Myra and even Claire, but people like Colling and David? It was weird. I don't know why it was weird, but it was weird.)

My Thoughts: 4 Stars
I was a fan of book one in the series, Curse Keepers, so I knew I would enjoy a follow up book, but sometimes the sex scenes were just much too steamy. The author did manage to jam-pack the novel with a ton of native American history. It was no different with book two. Lots of history and steamy scenes. I could have done with a lot less steamy and more action. I know not everyone thinks along those lines.

I found the character of Collin wishy-washy. In book one he was a strong guy walking around with purpose. In book two he was hiding out most of the time and waffled between saying he was protecting Ellie but going out of the way to keep her from the truth. Sometimes things just didn't make sense, but such is how it goes in real life, huh?

Now that the gate is open and the gods have escaped, Evie needs to find a way to trap them all again. The mark Collin put on her back in book one is fading and she must choose sides in this war of good verses evil before her current protection runs out. During her quest to find the truth and any details about the curse, she comes across Dr. David Preston, a British professor of Native American studies who at first blows off Evie's concerns. Then when he shows up to study the reappeared Roanoke Colony, David is drawn to Ellie. Ellie finally decides to trust someone and spills the truth to him.

If you are looking for an exciting read that packs a lot of history into the mix, then this book is for you.

I received this book as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this title.

~~I was gifted a copy in exchange of for an honest review~~

There are no words to describe how much I love this book. This book goes into what happened after the curse has been broken. It also shows how Ellie has grown into her own person. Ellie is stronger than ever before, and with the help of a very handsome Englishman named David, she gets down to what she needs to do, closing that gate. In this book there are not only spirits chasing Ellie, but there are also two thugs, and a police officer that is becoming more and more suspicious.

This is by far the best book out of the series. It has you on the edge of your seat, and it makes you stay engagued with the whole story. It won't let you put it down. It pulls you in and it never lets you go. You WILL have a book hangover after reading this book. The you will go back and read it again!

Denise has taken this book to a different level than The Curse Keepers. She has done enough research on the subject at hand, that she sounds like an expert in it!

I just knew the second book would be even better than the first and I was not disappointed. In The Curse Breakers we get to learn so much more about the gods, the curse, and also how a certain "deal" is connected to Ellie in a big way I never saw coming. I love how strong Ellie is in this book, and how much she's grown. Her interactions with Collin are perfect and some of my very favorite moments. He deserves everything she dishes out to him, and I wouldn't want it any other way, yet I still feel for Collin. I think there is more to him and hope some of that comes out in the next book. Then there's David AKA British Indiana Jones. And he's swoon worthy enough to do the name justice. I adore him, and he's so good for Ellie. Which has me a little worried about what might happen to him.

This was such a fun and exciting read. I couldn't put it down and ended up finishing it in one night. I definitely recommend this book, and can't wait for the next!

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

This is the second book in the Curse Keeper series. It is a continuation from the first book.

Ellie still has quite a bit of information to collect about what's happening around and to her. She definitely should have listened to the stories her dad passed along to her.

In addition she's battling her feelings for Colin and learning what type of evil he has surrounding him. Deciphering if he can really be trusted is a whole other matter.

All the clues Ellie is chasing leads her in circles - or so it seems - but it's all about to come to a head. Gosh, I can't wait to read how it all pans out in the third book. I like how the author has mixed history with present day along with the paranormal too. Makes for an interesting combination and a lesson included!

Well, here I am again,stuck... trying to figure out how to put into words how much I love this series. Ellie - my hands down favorite heroine of all time. Her journey in this book brings out a fierceness that truly impresses me. Collin... well, it's Collin 'effin' Daily, the man you love to hate and kinda want to hate yourself for loving even more after this book. Oh, and did I mention David? *swoon* *sigh* David. Once you read it you'll get it. Ellie's journey to figure out her role in all of this Curse Keepers mess continues to take it's twists and turns, leaving you on the edge of your seat cheering, then screaming when your stomach drops. Equal parts chilling, exciting, and romantic, I'd say this is another Denise Grover Swank Home Run! Don't miss out!

It really bothers me that a story that relies on Native American Mythology and lore has only one character from that community— even more bothersome is that the author has purposely separated this particular person from that community for the purpose of characterization. In this book we continue to discuss Native American history and mythology from a separate white perspective using books and museums. The Author has decided that the character with the most knowledge about the history and community is a scholar from England who views this community purely from an academic perspective. The living community is not allowed to be involved in this story in any meaningful way and that is a shame.

Goodness-where to even start? This is hands down my favorite series of all times. I adore Ellie. I envy her character. She is strong and ready to risk it all for those who matter. I don't have words that adequately describe just how amazing book two was. My heart broke for Collin and Ellie. I mean...David's cool and charming and smart and ridiculously helpful and has a sexy British accent...but HE'S NOT COLLIN!!!!!! Ugh. I highly recommend this series above anything else. Stop what you are doing and dig in.

Was blessed by Denise to get to read this a little early.
I was NOT disappointed. The Curse continues to reek havoc, evil murderous animals loom around, a nosy cop, thugs, and a gorgeous British Prof.... All keep Ellie busy, not to mention, Collin Fucking Dailey and his continued secrets. How will Collin handle another man sniffing around Ellie, will Collin be there for her when and if she needs his help

Another huge success for Swank. I couldn't decide who I liked more, Collin or David. Either one helped her in the end. This book moved just as fast as the other and it continues Ellie's search for answers about her destiny and part of the curse. We have a newcomer, David who is a professor and helps her discover more about the village. I really can't say much else without giving away the plot. This is the second book in the series by the way.

I have only one question.... When can I read the next one??? I am so in love with this series!! It was just as exciting and emotionally charged as the first, and now, on top of everything else, there's a love triangle!! I don't know who I want her to end up with more!! The suspense will be killing me until the next book becomes available...

This is book 2 in the Curse Keepers series and my goodness even if I'm reading this one after quite some time yet I felt like I had read the first book just yesterday and was thrilled to be back in this wild ride with Ellie.

After that devastating and shocking ending in book 1, I knew things would never be the same especially between Ellie and Collins but I was so surprised and loved the best new comer we get in this one.

When new unalivings of animals start happening around where Ellie lives, she knows the spirits and demons that escaped after the gate was opened, are wrecking havoc but at the cost of innocent lives.

Her fellow curse keeper has no interest in helping her and Ellie knows that Collin is the only other person who knows all things Curse related.

I loved how brave and resilient Ellie was in this book. Even though she regrets not listening to her dad when he wanted to teach her about the curse, yet she doesn't let that fact deter her. She might not know anything but she does her best as we join her in searching every clue or bit of information she can find.

This book certainly doesn't let go of you even for a single second and I loved how we experience Ellie in her quest to not only fight the demons, in this case the bad spirits including the giant badgers that are ready to go against Okeus's orders of not stealing Ellie's manitou and end her.

Those fights had me so on the freaking edge of my seat as I was FREAKING TERRIFIED for Ellie and those scenes were so fascinating to read because they are written so perfectly that I felt like I was watching a Paranormal/magical action scene.

Dr. David Preston is definitely one of my top favorite parts that we get in this book and honestly when we first meet him, I had no idea how integral he was going to be a part of both the story and for Ellie.

Ahh... I have to confess I'm in LOVEEEE with the hot British professor and it's definitely not only because of his accent (that too😉) but that man... Oh my freaking heart, he is so caring and the kind of man you can count on no matter what.
David is always there for you and he's the perfect gentleman who's rough where he needs to be 😉🥵 and so sweet where it's the most needed. 😍

Absolutely gripping, almost felt like a treasure hunt kind sometimes but instead of treasure make it searching for old secrets and ridding of curses and symbols of gods.
Every page felt like an adventure into the unknown and my goodness what an adventure it was.

Can't wait to dive into the third book, as I'm over the top excited but before that we have two more books. I don't know their order of reading so I'm just going to read them togther.
They are prequels, one about Collin and the Curse and the other is about what happened to Ellie's mother.
Abso-freaking-lutely loved loved this one. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
