Katherine Rebecca has always done exactly what was expected of her. Her prim and proper upbringing taught her the importance of family, sacrifice, and social stature. She has followed in her parents' footsteps, being trained and groomed daily almost from birth, to take over the family law firm. It was never a question of IF she wanted to but WHEN she would take the reins of the company. She worked rigorously toward that predetermined goal her entire life. She gave up friends, boyfriends, and an exciting social life in order to propel herself through school and college. Katherine Rebecca strives to please her parents. More than anything, she basked in their praise and approval. But now, at 21 years old, she finds herself leading a life that is nothing like the life she imagined for herself.
Becky has always possessed a deep love of magic. Ever since she was a small child she has been fascinated with magicians, illusions, mystery, and the vague hope that there was some sort of real magic in the world. But this is a secret no one knows, or at least that’s what she thought. Until one day Becky finds a mysterious business card in her pocket that leads her to an equally mysterious man. He opens up a whole new world of possibilities to her, one with a tantalizing proposition that she never thought imaginable.

I won an ARC of this book in a giveaway on the author's blog and went on to purchase it on Amazon later so I could see how/if the writing improved from soup to nuts. In addition to that, when the opportunity arose to join in on a review tour, I pounced. I've reviewed Ms. Greene's work in the past and found it more than five star worthy. This book had a couple of flaws; but didn't disappoint when it came time to deliver on the story end. I have in no way been compensated for my participation in this tour and all opinions are my own. On to the good stuff.
From a Reader's Perspective: I didn't like Ms. Hoity Toity Perfect in Every Way Becky at the beginning of the book. She was too prim, too proper, and did too many things just because her parents wanted her to. As the story moves forward, we begin to see all may not be as it first seemed. Little Becky has kept secrets from her mother and father throughout the years. One big one was why Becky had a falling out with her ex-boyfriend, Lance. This is one spot I found an inconsistency in the story though. In chapter eight, Becky talks about her mother setting up dinners between the two families because she was ignorant to what happened with Lance. Later, in chapter eleven, Becky talks about how her mother knew and was okay with what he'd done. As a reader, continuity is something I expect and it did throw me for a loop when I read it.
But, the magical aspects of the story and Becky's well-kept secret helped move the story along. I was fascinated at how she'd kept that aspect of her life hidden for so long and thrilled when she discovered all may not be as it first appeared. I won't go into that because I refuse to give spoilers. You'll have to read the book to find out what I'm talking about.
There are two love interests in the book as well, and I can't wait for book two so I can find out which one wins Becky's heart and why. Neither felt added as an afterthought and both fit into the story perfectly.
From an Editor's Perspective: Pronouns! These seem to give authors the most trouble. I found no pronoun errors in Ms. Greene's first book, Twisted, and contractions were used well. Illusions Begin could use contractions to make the prose and dialogue flow more easily. There are also many commas missing between statements and names in dialogue. But those are nitpicks most people probably wouldn't pick up on.
Rating: +1 Star for giving me a truly magical story +1 Star for showing me Becky's imperfections as the book went on and not letting her remain annoyingly unlikeable +1 Star for the awesome surprises along the way +1 Star for the guys in the story -1 Star for the inconsistency in story and the need for pronoun/contraction/comma oopsie repair Overall, 4 out of 5 stars! Highly recommended for those who love an engaging story with awesome twists.
Little did I know when I picked this book to read and started it that this author would be snatching me away and not letting go until I reached the end even though I was reading something else at the time of looking at this. It wasn't enough that the cover beckons to you and says open me up and read me. Katherine Rebecca or Becky is taken as a little girl to the circus by her Nanny because even though her parents love her they don't care for the circus. When it is all said and done she falls hard for the magic and entranced by the magician taking away her heart to all things magic. Years later though she is now working as a lawyer in her family's firm but secretly still magic is in her soul. Now she is able to do any trick or illusion same or if not better. Having also broken off her engagement to Lance who also works there also finds her sometimes dragging feet to go off to work knowing him for the creep he is. Of course by now you are caught tight and the pages are flying because this author can do that for the reader. Events start happening that escalate to reveal even more things in her life need some rethinking and Lance's true colors are coming out more on how he is just worse than she thought. Thanks to a pick pocket who she got the best of when he tried to get her wallet she is asked out by the detective in charge and she goes. If that is not enough she gets strange emails from MysticSeekers and even a card with someone also seems to be following her. That someone is soon revealed when he seeks her out. Blaine is the one shadowing her and also helped her out in a jam concerning Lance. He wants her to train with him because of her love of magic but she also must believe again. She has two parents that love her dearly but dutiful daughter that she is she is torn on what to do. Something happens that she feels takes that decision from her. As I have mentioned this author has a gripping read here with mystery and intrigue with a hint of romance also. Eloquently done keeps you spellbound to the very end but wait it is not the end but really only the beginning. Received a arc for a honest review (Paranormal,Fantasy,Dystopia, and Romance Readers,Writers and Reviewers)
'Illusions Begin' is a great new novel that introduces the possibility of a unique and exciting paranormal series that I really can't wait to get my hands on and read!
The story starts off with a young Katherine Rebecca, or Becky, who is taken to her first, and only trip as a child, to the circus by her nanny because her parents don't care for this kind of stuff. At the circus she is enchanted by magicians and their work and this is where she falls in love with the idea of magic. After being told over and over magic isn't real, she believes it, and years later at the age of 21 she is working as a trainee attorney at her family business that one day she has to take over but she has not let go of magic as she watches shows all the time and analyses the tricks down to a t. She goes about her life believing she magic can never really be a part of her, that is until she meets Blaine.
Becky was a really likable character, she was humorous and endearing as well as strong headed and confident. I love how she feels every time she experiences magic and how she has not let go of it even though she doesn't believe in it. I loved her relationships with people at the business especially her dad, her secretary Helen and the building's security guard. They were all well explored and they only emphasised what a lovely person Becky is.
In this book alone two potential love interests were introduced. A hot police man, Ethan and the mysterious MysticSeeker, Blaine. I definitely know which guy I prefer but the romances were not explored nearly enough but you can still see a clear outcome.
All in all, a really great, quick read that sets up for a great series. I can't wait for the sequel to see Becky find out more about magic and where she truly belongs, if she decided to go ahead with it! I also can't wait for Becky and Blaine's relationship to be explored.
*Thanks to the author who sent me a copy in return of a review*
I thought Illusions Begin was a fun, original story that introduces a Paranormal series from author N.L. Greene.
Becky is a very authentic character. Out of obligation to her family, she sacrifices her own happiness to work in a field she does not enjoy (and in close quarters with her cheating ex). Due to long hours at the office and a very shy demeanor, she is a bit of a loner with no real friends apart from the family business.
One of the few things that bring her joy is magic. She secretly studies the craft at home and wears costumes when she attends a magic show out of town. Believing her family would find her hobby ridiculous and shameful, Becky hides her love of magic from everyone. Through a course of mysterious events, Becky meets a man that not only encourages her to develop her craft, he offers to show her that magic is not just tricks with smoke and mirrors. She must decide if she wants to leave her “real world” behind in pursuit of a calling that gives her dull life new meaning and joy.
I liked the relationships between Becky and the 4 men introduced in this book. Her father (whom she tries to please), her ex (whom she tries to avoid), the hot cop (whom courts her) and the mysterious man (whom excites her). Ironically, it is the mysterious man that interacts with the real Becky; her guard is always up with the others for one reason or another.
This was an original take on a paranormal romance/adventure. If other books can focus on fairies, witches, demons and such, it is easy to enjoy a book about magic being more than just parlor tricks. I thought the book was well written and thought out. I very much look forward to the next book. I as eager as Becky to discover more about real magic and see what she does with this information!

Well this was a story I didn’t expect! Totally different to anything I’ve ever read before, I was fully engrossed and taken on a magical journey from the very first page.
When Becky experienced her first magic show as a child she was fascinated and became almost obsessed with the need to solve every trick, discover how each illusion worked and even make up a few of her own. Sadly her parents didn’t share her enthusiasm causing Becky to enjoy and practice in secret. The older she got the more interested she became, but this was not a pastime that suited her social standing nor was it expected of someone in her profession.
Becky’s life had been pre-planned for her, from her career in law, to the man she would marry, and up until now, not wanting to disappoint her parents, she went along with their wishes. It wasn’t until a mystery man appeared in her life that she really began to question herself, should she continue on the path her parents have set out for her, or should she follow her heart into the unknown and see where it takes her?
Illusions Begin is a paranormal romance but with a difference. It doesn’t follow your typical paranormal pattern and we have not one possible love interest, but two, both of which are worthy candidates. Also thrown in the mix is the undesirable ex with his smarmy attitude and face you want to punch, and I found the combination thrilling. I enjoy being surprised and not knowing where a story will take me, and this book ticked all the boxes on that front, it was exciting, and fresh.
Illusions Begins, by N.L.Greene starts with a common childhood memory. We've all been to the circus, most of us have been dozens of times. But for 6 year old Katherine Rebbecca this is a pivotal moment in her structured life. She falls in love, at that young age, with the world of magic and it fundamentally affects her. As she grows, Becky comes to realize that magic isn't more than illusion, slight of hand, and well-thought tricks, but that realization doesn't decrease her fascination with the subject. In fact, she becomes obsessed with it, spending all her free time studying the masters of the craft, teaching herself the ins and outs of the industry by careful observation and unyielding determination.
But she does this all in secret, terrified of disappointing her loving parents. To them she is their brilliant daughter, poised to take over the family law firm after completing her degree in half the time. She is stifled by the double life she is leading, weighed down by guilt for not loving the dream career that she has. Because it's not her dream. It's not magic.
She is weighed down by the responsibility she has, tormented by her scumbag ex-fiance... and there's this mysterious guy that's been following her around. Appearing suddenly, and with impeccable timing, in a city as large as New York it's unlikely to be the same guy... impossible even. Why, only magic could make his too-frequent appearances possible, and everyone knows that magic isn't real.
Becky is drawn to magic, but it doesn't fit into the plan she has for her life; a plan she believes her parents have long wanted. While being the dutiful daughter during the day, she sneaks off at night to fulfill her passionate need for magic by going to shows and learning all she can about the tricks she sees.
Then, one day, she finds a mysterious invitation to find out more about real magic. This leads her to an intriguing man named Blaine who wants to teach her. Before she can give into her desire to know, something happens that rocks her world; something that reminds her duty comes first.
Although it took me a few pages to warm up to Becky, she did find a place in my heart. She wanted to do what was best for her family, but she found ways to also feed her own interests. And I loved that she was willing to work her way up from the bottom instead of relying on her family legacy. By the end, I believed her choice and supported her although my heart broke.
This was a great first book in a series because it built the necessary foundation for the reader to care about the characters and want to see what would happen to them going forward. As soon as I finished this one, I wanted to jump right into the next. Good thing I could!
I highly recommend Illusions Begin to readers who appreciate memorable characters and an intriguing story concept. Just don't expect much resolution in book one.
Note: I received a complimentary copy for review purposes. A positive review was not requested or guaranteed; the opinions expressed are my own.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Cover: Magical. Pun completely intended. It is such a sexy, fun cover! The couple is hot, the cards are a perfect touch. I love the boldness of the red. I just love everything about it. The book’s cover designer gets a round of applause from yours truly.
The Characters: Becky is so vivid and fabulous, she nearly leaps off the page. I could relate to her in so many ways. I love her inner struggle, against the expectations set for her by others, and what she wants for herself. She is an amazing character. There are two amazing guys as well, but I’m afraid to spoil the fun for you. Once you understand the illusion, it’s no longer enchanting! :)
The Plot: This is the fun part for me. I loved the plot of this book. The story is fresh and imaginative. I love it when an author is brave enough to step outside of the box and offer up something new! N.L. Greene delivers an imaginative, fun story that will keep the reader turning pages long into the night. The storyline was well-developed and the amounts of tension and fun were perfectly balanced. This book is a wonderful example of good writing! You don’t have to write erotica to have sexy in a book, and Illusions Begin is tastefully sexy.
Rating: 5 Aces of Hearts! I loved it! I would recommend it to anyone who loves YA/NA or a well-written, fun story. It was simply magical! :)
Katherine Rebecca has had her whole life planned out for her since the day she was born, and I really felt for her. She has always put others needs first and become the lady expected of her, whilst hiding her true self from everyone. As she grows up, she never forgets her love of magic and secretly starts practising her own illusions and working out how others do their tricks, scared to let anyone into that part of her life. Things start getting strange when she notices someone watching her, then a business card appears in the trouser pocket one day which leads to meeting a stranger who can turn her life upside down. Can she let go of her fears and travel her own path, or will she follow in her parents footsteps and take over the business?
I really enjoyed reading this book, and can’t wait to see where things are going to go with the series. I loved how the author depicted the excitement Katherine Rebecca felt when she experienced her first magic show, and found it really helped set the scene for the book. Incredibly well written, the story flowed smoothly, and with the descriptive nature I easily found myself completely lost in the story. Even if you have no interest in magic, I would still recommend reading this book.
I received an e-copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Katherine Rebecca Wellington grew up in New York and was groomed to be prim and proper and to one day take over the family’s prestigious law firm. Knowing that the firm had been in her family for many generations she was willing and ready to keep the business going even if it was at the expense of her own dreams. As a young girl she once saw a magic show put on during a circus she attended and fell deep in love. She spent all of her spare time solving the tricks and illusions so that she could perfect them herself. Rebecca knew that her parents did not share the love for magic and forbade her at a young age to practice so she kept her secret love hidden. She would secretly go to magic shows and sit by herself watching closely to take in all that she was able to observe, that way when she would get home later she could write down notes and solve the tricks. But one day after leaving a magic show she finds a mysterious business card in her back pocket. After receiving an equally mysterious email, she gets a call from a mysterious man that is linked to the two. Her life will forever be changed after they meet. You MUST read this book, it was so good. I think I already love this series.
Katherine Elizabeth, we learn to know her as Becky, is enthralled by magic as a young child and never quite loses the love. Although she works as a lawyer in her father’s firm she still attends magic shows and learns all the tricks. After attending a magic show someone puts a business card in her pocket, and she starts noticing a mystery man hanging around. After being mugged she gets called to the local precinct where she meets Ethan, a hunky cop. As her life is suddenly turned upside down, can she believe in magic? I wanted to read this as magic always calls my name. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book grabbed me right away, and I totally enjoyed the story. I did find at times the story seemed to be stilted, but that did not distract me from the storyline itself. I would definitely recommend this book, it was like a breath of fresh air to me. I am anxiously awaiting the next book, I can’t wait to see where the author takes it.
This book was a breath of fresh air! Truly didn't see this one coming! (No pun intended) A child's first encounters with various situations and people are very pivotal at a young age which in this case is Katherine Rebecca's fist experience at the circus. She grows to love and yearn for more knowledge of the mysterious world, magic, and the illusions associated but quickly finds out life had other plans for her.
"Becky" has always grown up sheltered and at a young age took on the responsibility of her family, the business, and also the harsh problems that come with it. But the love of magic diminished but never died away. Who knew a risky trip to thirst her quench of childhood circus nostalgia would turn into so much more!
The story, plot, and characters are refreshing with real life problems and situations with just a touch of magic. Its definitely a great start and I can't wait to read where this goes!
Illusions Begin is just as enticing as it sounds. It's not just another fantasy book. In fact, for most of the novel it's hard to remember that it IS a fantasy book. It weaves such a subtle tale of a mystical existence that it's....real. It really pulled me in. The book has so much to offer (more tha nmagic). It's a saga that encompasses self discovery, family, relationships, love, and finding your place. Who can't relate to that?
Katherine Rebecca is so full of life. She's witty, fun, and quirky. You just want her to figure it all out. You want to be her friend. Her character is devloped so well. She is beautiful but doesn't know it. She has fears and dreams. She struggles. She loses. She triumphs. And we are all there for her journey.
Great novel. I couldn't put it down! Can't wait to see what's in store for book 2.
Let's begin with, I was not expecting the form of 'magic' in this book to be magician magic. I anticipating a more magical magic, although I had not seen the cover until I began to write this review. And if I had seen the cover before I read it, I would have anticipated a much more sexually based book as the cover is quite scandalous. Anyway, that is not to say that the form of magic made the book any less interesting. The concept: Becky is a smothered child and too afraid to speak up to her loving parents who expect only the best. She can't find the words or time to tell her parents about her secret love, magic. Until a moment when she meets a mysterious man who wants to show her a whole different side of magic......
I was given this book to write a honest review. It surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I found it quite captivating and struggled to put it down. The book I feel was the very beginning of a exciting story of life, magic & finding your true self especially for the leading lady Becky. I really liked the characters - Ethan Yum Yum he's a hot policeman and a gentleman, but then there is Blaine who is mysterious yet appears to wear his heart on his sleeve and has such a magnetic attraction to Becky. This story was different to any other book I've read and I most certainly want more & will be reading the next book. Thanks! A fab read!
I seriously enjoyed this book. Do you believe in Magic? If not, this story might just jump-start your imagination. The characters were great and the storyline was fun. I picked up this read and didn't put it down until I was done. The action, is thrilling. The suspense, is gripping. The mystery, is intriguing. But there is so much more, that I can't wait to read the next part of this story! A recommendation from me, this is a definite addition to anyones TBR list!
This a fun, engrossing, different story. It's well written and the characters are engaging and interesting. I was hooked all the way through and can't wait to carry on the story with the next book. I look forward to reading many more from this fantastic author.
This was a good story! Kind of frustrating at first seeing Becky, living he life to please her parents and not living her life for herself. The book has some great characters that so lifelike in the way they are described. The book is well written.
This book is a great reminder that not all magic themed books have to feature wands and fantastical creatures to put its readers under a spell from which they are unable to take their eyes off the book until they reach the last page. The magic in this book is all about illusions and tricks, the kind of magic that you would go and see and then spend a week trying to figure out how it was done! To me, magicians are like rockstars, so to have an entire series dedicated to magic and the magicians behind it was something too good to miss out on, and so far I have not been disappointed.
Katherine Rebecca or Becky as she is known is the perfect daughter, having been brought up being groomed for the family business is is everything her parents expect and need her to be. But she is bored, and her love and secret 'magical' life is the thing that helps her to keep up the charade that she is happy in the life her parents have set out for her.
I have never like the whole "family business" thing, I have always thought that it is kind of unfair for parents to expect their children to sacrifice their own dreams to keep their parents dreams going. My dad owns a brewery: he loves it, I don't. As much as I love my dad I do not see myself running the brewery once he retires. But Becky sacrifices her own dreams for her parents, and her selflessness along with her quirky thinking makes her such a likeable character.
In this book we are lucky enough to have not just one but two delicious men to drool over and if there is one thing N.L.Greene is good at, it's writing men worthy of our drool! Ethan, the very attractive cop, who is one of those men who just says and does all the perfect things as makes the butterflies appear in your belly. Everyone needs an Ethan in their lives, even if just as a friend. Then there is mystery man Blaine. I do love a mysterious man, as does Becky, and the attraction between them is immediately there. Don't worry, there's no insta-love, just normal chemistry and shock worthy sparks.
As well as the drool worthy men there is also Becky's father and her Ex-Fiance Lance who make appearances in this book. I didn't know how to feel about her father. I liked him, he was a nice man, but at the same time it annoyed me that he couldn't see that his daughter was not happy with the life he had basically forced her into. Ex-fiance Lance is a douche, scumbag, sleaze ball... (I could go on forever!). Basically NOT a nice person in the slightest, who refuses to accept things not going his way.
And then there is the magic. The book starts with Becky's earliest memory of being taken to the circus and immediately falling in love with the magicians. (Kind of reminds me of my first Book Day at school.) I find it really sad that she has to keep her love of magic a secret, and through the whole book its very obvious that she is lonely. She has no friends, she has no social life, all she really has is her magic.
An excellent start to the series. N.L.Greene is perfect at drawing us in and giving us just enough information to get us hooked. I'm really interested to see how each persons story is going to develop in the following books and I can't wait for more magic!!!
I think it is only fair to preface this with the fact that I don’t normally read “New Adult” anything. I prefer my stories with a bit more heat. But this books storyline appealed to me. So I picked it up and I have to say, that the author had me hooked. From page one, I was turning pages. I loved how Becky dealt with the mugger on the subway. (You’ll have to read the book to find out what she did. I will say, that I was holding my sides laughing, while thinking “You go girl!”). All the while the author teases you and Becky with a mystery, and an internal struggle of whether to follow her dreams or do what is expected of her.
It’s a journey that the author allows us as readers to hitch a ride and observe. Becky is finding herself as a professional adult, and a woman. What does she want out of life and what is she will to sacrifice to obtain her dreams, as well as make her parents happy, and fulfill the family legacy. I had a bit of a problem with the ending of this book. It is to me, what I would classify book one out of three, in a serial not a series. But this might be the product of it being a “New Adult Paranormal Romance” as opposed to a “Paranormal Romance”. Since to me, the end of book one, was neither a happy ending, nor did it bring things to a satisfactory conclusion. But then again, there are two more books. The one thing it did do…… I want to know what happens next!!!!
I recommend this series. Not just book one, but all three books!!
I really hate it, really do hate it when you start a book and you are so interested due to the cover design or maybe due to the first few pages and then slowly it all goes down the drain. It's frustrating and irritating. This book had lots of potentials, I just can't believe how everything dissipated. It ended abruptly with a cliffhanger. Not interested in the next instalment
