This is a straight up adventure thriller and makes no apologies about it. While there is a mystery you the reader clearly are not meant to “figure it out” but instead follow along the ride as it slowly unfolds. What you get instead is a lot of butt kicking. This was just a fun read. It might not win any awards for prose or changing the world but if you like military-esq adventure books then this book offers time well spent.

None of the characters are all that fleshed out and you generally get a collection of 2 dimensional stereotypes, but again that is not the point of this book. This isn’t a character driven story; it’s all about the action and beating the “ticking clock”. Watching a guy with top of the line special forces training being set on by “good ol’ boys” that are used to beating up environmental protesters was a thrill. My only complaint is there wasn’t enough of it, but that is just me wanting more of a good thing.

The plot is fairly interesting and I was on board throughout as the story unfolded. Unlike many books of the genre once you find out the end scenario it doesn’t come off as completely over the top or preposterous. My only real complaint is the “real bad guys” once they are revealed are a bit too well informed. They have information it seems unlikely a group, even a well-financed group, like theirs would have a hold of. That being said the way events unfolded I was on board with and made sense to me.

The pacing of this book is excellent. As you would expect from this type of thriller it is fast paced and rarely lets up. The reader will practically zip through the pages of the book once the story kick into gear, and it is a fast read.

Another new author thanks to NetGalley. Tantalizing lead character.

What I liked: Although I hadn't read the first novel in this series, I could easily follow the story and didn't feel I was missing too much. Having said that, I found the lead, Michael Herne, so interesting, I will go back and read the first in the series, Operator. The characters felt like "real" people. They weren't perfect, they had everyday problems in their lives. While I didn't know it at specific points in the story, all the plot lines tied together and it didn't feel contrived. I enjoyed the suspense and the interaction between all the characters. The story flowed very well and felt complete. I seriously couldn't figure out all the clues.

What I didn't like: Some of the things the lead did seemed beyond belief but as this is fiction, Mr. Vinjamuri could have his hero do just about anything he wanted.

This is available only in Kindle. The price, $4.97, could be an issue for some and does seem a bit high for only the second book in the series.

From the very beginning this an action-packed thriller. The pace is unrelenting as Michael Herne moves from one danger to another as he tries to assist his former boss. The characters are well-developed and multi-dimensional. There is a surprise around every corner, and so many suspense-filled moments that it is impossible to put the book down. Don't start this book if you don't have the time to give it your full attention right up to the end. Many similar stories of former special forces people and country-threatening conspiracies are out there, but this one makes all the other look like pale imitations. It is well worth a read or two.

I have to say I really enjoyed reading this book, it is the second in the Michael Herne series, I hadn't read the first one but I don't think reading this one out of sequence did any harm. It is very much a boys own action packed thriller with well plenty of twists and turns. Is it going to win a booker prize probably not but is it a page turner I thiink it is.

If you like the Jack Reacher or Nick Stone ex-military reluctant hero type novels you will probably like this also.

Vinjamuri did a great job of bringing me into the scenes. His expert us of the first person drew me into the scenes. The description and dialogue were woven together in such a way that I could picture the scene in my mind, as if I was there. Character development was great and the plot was extremely enjoyable. If you like a good thriller, you'll love this.

I don’t normally read thrillers, but Binder kept me engrossed until the final page. Be prepared for a plot with as many twists as a road through the West Virginia mountains!

Author David Vinjamuri has a knack for creating authentic characters across the range of human experience. In this case, we meet environmental activists, white supremacists, mine workers, business owners, and law enforcement agents, along with Tier 1 operator Michael Herne. This authenticity drew me in, and I just needed to know what was going to happen next to each of them.

Binder is one of those rare books that has a cinematic quality to it. Some of the scenes were written so vividly that I could picture exactly how they would look on the movie screen. It’s been years since I felt that way while reading a book.

I did read the first book in this series, Operator, and felt that this book could easily stand on its own, with all the necessary backstory included. I liked the pacing in this book even more than the first.

Binder
By David Vinjamuri
Publisher:

Radical environmentalist, a crooked mine boss, a white superamcy group, and a ex-Speciali Ops soldier. This book seems to have it all.

The book started slow and took a couple of chapters to warm up. Once it did though it was soldier action to the end.

Mike Herne, call sign Orion, is asked by his old boss, Alpha, to look for a girl. A girl who was part of the protests at the Hobart mine.

What seems a simple job, becomes a deadly adventure as one group after another sets out to kill Mike.

This is the second in the series of Mike Herne stories, although it works well as a standalone book. Written in the same style as the Jason Borne books, it draws you I with the action, and cliff hanger chapter endings.

For an action book the characters develop rather well, particularly the lead Mike, and his new found FBI buddy Agent Nichols, who plays the potential love interest in the book.

This is a great read, and I can’t wait for the next.

ARC for review.

Definitely not my usual thing, but set in West Virginia. We'll see......

These types of manly-man, retired special-ops books are not my cup of tea, but this was quite enjoyable. First, it was set primarily in southern West Virginia (though there were several errors....there is no area in Charleston called "Kanawha" - there is Kanawha City, but that is NOT the area described around Newton Road which is and has always been called "South Hills" and with the discussion around mine disasters it was odd to have no mention of either Sago or Upper Big Branch. Nice shout-out to Pies and Pints, though (even though the main character didn't enjoy the pizza)). Anyway, the books plot dealt with white supremacist groups (like the National Front) but overshadowed by money, natch.

For readers who like these types of books, this is a good bet.

This isn't my normal read but I thought the premise sounded interesting. It was a well written book with great characters. (didn't read book one) Michael goes into West Virginia to save a young girl from domestic terrorists.
