NERDY SUSPICIOUS life, born to write Technothrillers
B. G. has a degree in Applied Mathematics and was a Software Engineer. Nowadays, her technical kicks come from doing research for her TECHNOTHRILLERS, DYSTOPIAN, POST-APOCALYPTIC, and CLIMATE Fiction. She loves creating future worlds based on earth with cool technology, working on her website, and creating her own book covers. She is the author of the epic DYSTOPIAN THRILLER SERIES GARBAGE.
She confesses to being a Zumbaholic. To keep her fingers keyboard-strong, she weightlifts with Dark Chocolate M&Ms, the heavy ones with peanuts.
Her suspicious side eggs her on to write Paranormal and Supernatural fiction under the name B. AUSTIN.
She thanks you humbly for your interest and taking the time to read her bio. If you want to know more about her stranger-than-science-fiction suspicious life, she has written a series MEMOIRS OF A BIGAMIST'S DAUGHTER.
I didn't enjoy this book; however, I can see how some other readers might. To this end, I will categorize my feedback into my top areas of interest.
Premise: The premise of this book was intriguing, or it should have been.
The first half of the book wraps around the conflict between the Emperor's administration and the rebellious, witless youth, including the Emperor's own son. Unfortunately, the youth in question appear to be directionless as well. The main character has a gift which draws the Emperor's attention and ire. In a logical next step, the Emperor's son pursues the MC.
This is when the story takes an odd and meandering turn toward an attempt at a romantic arc. There is little if any heat and much meandering into whispery tale-carrying and petty encounters for the MC.
Narration Voice: Blunt, passive, and expository.
The reader is fed information without color or nuance, sometimes by the narrator and sometimes by the characters themselves. The main character spends no less than the first ten chapters stating the obvious either to themselves or directly to the reader.
It makes for a stark introduction to an uncomfortable world.
Character
--Building: The characters are portrayed more like avatars of the ideas of the characters rather than fully developed and multidimensional relatable characters.
--Voice: The various characters range in speech from the talk of angsty twenty-somethings (if that mature) to caricature puppets or absurd clowns.
World Building: The world within the story is meant to encompass a large area and display what might happen after an economically motivated power grab. Unfortunately, the world portrayed is limited to the boroughs of New York, robbing the stakes of the conflict of any meaningful tension.
In the end, the setup for the next intended book in the series is there but a bit obvious.
I would recommend this book for readers who want a simple world with no beating around the bush.
I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book is a bit twisted. It is a story about a society in which everyone is born into a specific station in life. There seems no way to move up in life, but you can be demoted for not following the rules.
You are considered flawless if you follow every rule or garbage if you don't. I would never want to live in a world like what is described in this book.
Echo is the main character. She loves to paint and sometimes she paints the future. She is garbage because she does not fit into the life she was born into. Because of one of her visions that she painted on a public building, she gets her family demoted a level. This makes her a 3rd class instead of 2nd class.
This book was interesting enough that I would like to read the next one in the series. It is a short book, so it doesn't take too long to read.
