I recently retired, and have jumped back into one of my favorite lifetime hobbies -- fly fishing for trout! This book by George Daniel and Josh Miller's recent book, Euro Nymphing have been absolutely eye-opening for me. Over the years, nymph fishing for trout has always been difficult for me to fully understand and execute, and the new techniques and methods that both Mr. Daniel and Mr. Miller have provided in their superb books have given me some completely new perspectives and the powerful desire to learn how to effectively catch more trout. I live just 2.5 hours from some very high quality trout waters on the Upper Kern River in the southern Sierras, and I have been having a ball trying out these new trout nymphing techniques described by Mr. Daniel. These are books that I will be constantly revisiting as I gain more experience. 5/5 stars for me.
George Daniel's book can sit on the coffee table. Not only is it a definitive source of nymphing instruction, it's full of beautiful pictures and drawings that are just fun to page through. I read through it completely and often need to reread sections because there's so much valuable information. It teaches fly selection, casting technique, various leader recipes, and how to fish in various water conditions. I highly recommend it for anyone trying to uplift their fly fishing enjoyment.
Solid read for experienced stream/fly fisherman. Not for the beginner by any means. George is loaded with knowledge and specialized tactics. Especially in Pennsylvania.
Good book on general nymphing. Been fly fishing and 90% of the time is nymphing and I picked up a few skills and ideas that made it well worth it to me.
Look I am a fly-fisherman, I will read almost anything on the subject in the same way that I will drown a worm in a muddy rain puddle if that is all there is to be had on the fishing front.
Was this book useful? Yes undoubtedly it was and did I enjoy readying it? Of that I am not quite so sure.
There were a few points made which I tend to disagree with, but that said there was a lot of information which I found interesting and quite possibly very useful. It is a book that you should read if you are a fly-fisherman, but I do think that having read it one should retain one's own thinking and not simply follow the mandates provided like some piscatorial sheep.
The variations of Modern Nymph fishing are massive and this book does an exceptional job of putting them all together in a workable compendium. As a "one stop shop" to get a basic idea of the variations available to the accomplished angler this is a must read copy, but as said, for me there was something lacking in the readability of it and perhaps in terms of some of the philosophy behind the various methodologies which could have been explored in more depth.
This is an excellent book that goes over the basics as well as advanced techniques for modern nymphing. The author explores nymphing styles that breath life into the sport and go far beyond the classic and mind numbing - strike indicator bob up and down stuff. It has great photos that break down casting, what nymphs to fish, and how to fish different water types. This book makes you want to go fishing and tie your own confidence flies. That's the best a fly fishing book can accomplish. I've had some great days on the water practicing these techniques. A must have for your fishing library.
If you're new or experienced at the art of nymphing, there's something in this book for you. You can read most parts of this book and go from absolute novice to catching fish in no time. For the advanced nympher, there are sections in this book that are incredibly specific and detailed. Pick what you want to learn and start catching more fish.
This book was recommended to me as the most up-to-date and comprehensive work on modern nymphing methods available today. It definitely was all that and more.
If you want romance, read 'A River Runs Through It'. If you want to catch more trout than everyone else, read this book.
This book has a broad range of information on different nymphing techniques, from czech nymphing to fishing a dry and dropper. Lots of great suggestions on leader building and building sighters into a leader too.
After multiple readings and countless skimmings, I continue to find applicable ideas from this book. It's really well-written, and beautifully produced. This is probably the most important book in my fly-fishing library.
