First published in 1971, and here reissued for the second time, the emphasis of this book is firmly on the biographical rather than the literary. The author has also written biographies of Charlotte Bronte and Elizabeth Gaskell. Emily was perhaps the least accessible of the Bronte sisters, and Winifred Gerin presents a balanced impression of her life, without becoming dazzled by her strangeness. She probes her withdrawn, mystical character, but counters it with an appreciation of her practicality and humanity. She traces Emily's development from unhappy schooldays, through her love of walking on the moors, the writing of "Gondal", "Wuthering Heights", the French Essays and her poems, to her death.

Es una biografía fiable y quería leerla porque en internet o incluso en otras biografías podemos encontrarnos versiones diferentes sobre algunos episodios de la vida de las Brontë o incluso sobre sus personalidades. Esta versión, en particular, me ha parecido muy verosímil y lógica y le doy bastante credibilidad.
Está claro que Emily Brontë tenía un fuerte carácter y era bastante peculiar, incluso para ser la hija de un párroco que vivía en un lugar retirado. No creo que podamos imaginarnos la vida que llevaban allí, casi solo teniendo a la familia como compañía pero yo, que soy introvertida y si no me controlo me aíslo mucho, ya os digo que estar mucho tiempo solo puede llegar a cambiar mucho el carácter.

Uno de los aspectos que más me ha gustado de este libro es que nos cuenta cuales son las posibles influencias que tuvo la autora para escribir Cumbres borrascosas y me han parecido teorías muy acertadas y bien argumentadas. Por un lado, Emily nunca dejó de enriquecer ese mundo ficticio que ella y Anne crearon de niñas y algunos de los pasajes, poemas o personajes parece que son un atisbo de algunas ideas que incluiría más tarde en su novela.

Después está el tema de Branwell, el hermano descarriado. Ese hombre del que se esperaba tanto y que fracasó de forma tan estrepitosa que es imposible no sentirse triste al conocer su historia. Branwell tenía las cualidades pero no la actitud. Parece que para Anne esto se debía a que no se educaba a los hombres para ser fuertes y soportar las tentaciones y los problemas que se les venían encima y al menos, en el caso de su hermano parece que así fue.

Tanto ella como Emily se inspiraron mucho en él para sus personajes masculinos. No quiere esto decir que Heathcliff sea Branwell como dicen algunas teorías, no lo creo, Heathcliff tiene ideas de otros personajes y su propia personalidad, pero el gran dolor que siente por perder a su amada sí que es muy probable que Emily lo aprendiese de él. Según la autora del libro, ella sacó de ahí la idea de un amor destructivo y esa sería la explicación a la tan ansiada pregunta de cómo una mujer joven, que vivió tan aislada y sin ninguna experiencia amorosa pudo retratar con tanta vehemencia una relación tan tormentosa y poderosa.

Otro detalle que me sorprendió es que Emily Brontë había empezado a escribir una segunda novela y la tenía lo suficientemente avanzada como para contarse a su editor. No obstante, por las razones que fuera, dejó de escribirla. Creo que más que las críticas negativas sobre Cumbres dejó de hacerlo cuando su hermano empezó a estar peor. El estado anímico de esa casa debía ser terrible y si era ella quien lo iba a buscar a los bares y lo ayudaba a entrar en casa por las noches, creo que tuvo que sufrir mucho. La tragedia llegaría para quedarse, porque el señor Brontë perdería a todos sus hijos en poco tiempo.

Se hace un repaso de la vida de Emily y sus hermanas, la mayoría me resultó muy conocido pero como podéis ver, hay aspectos o episodios que aquí se detallan mucho mejor, se citan cartas, poemas, fragmentos de las obras… y es una buena fuente para conocer más la vida y motivaciones de esta autora de la que, en realidad, no se sabe mucho.

Algo que hizo que el ritmo de lectura fuese más lento de lo usual, además de mis asuntos personales, fue que se citan muchos poemas de Emily. Eso me gustó mucho, porque nunca los había leído y tenía mucha curiosidad, es muy laureada por sus poemas, pero por desgracia, creo que la traducción no les beneficia nada. Siempre he leído que tenían una gran musicalidad y, al estar en español al menos, no la conserva. No sé si se debe a la traducción o a que es imposible trasladarlo a otro idioma, pero tenemos la ventaja de que la autora los explica. Muchos de estos poemas están relacionados con Gondal y las historias que Emily y Anne contaban allí, así que se comprenden mucho mejor en su contexto.

Estoy bastante contenta con esta lectura, he aprendido mucho más y me gustaría que hubiesen traducido también las otras biografías que la autora realizó sobre las autoras.

Si os gustan las Brontë os animo a leerla si podéis porque vale mucho la pena y sus vidas fueron dignas de una novela, de hecho, se han escrito varias inspiradas en ellas. Además, no dejéis pasar la oportunidad de leer sus novelas porque las tres fueron escritoras maravillosas y nos han dejado grandes historias y personajes fascinantes. Siempre que termino de leer una biografía de las Brontë me quedo con una sensación de tristeza y vacío porque su final fue muy trágico y doloroso para toda la familia y no es algo que podamos cambiar. Como una lectora que las admira, siento mucho que tuviesen que sufrir tanto y a pesar de que sé como acaba, no puedo dejar de apenarme y desear que el final hubiese sido otro. Fueron las primeras escritoras clásicas que leí y las que me llevaron a interesarme por otros géneros literarios, así que siempre tendré una relación especial con ellas y tener al alcance libros como este es muy interesante para mí.
La edición es bastante sencilla, pero cuidada, aunque tiene algunas erratas. La portada no es nada bonita, solo es un fondo rojo, pero la contraportada me encanta porque han puesto en grande el retrato de Emily Brontë, que casualmente es mi favorito. Aunque hay que tener cuidado porque circulan muchos que no son realmente retratos suyos y ya sabéis que en muchas ocasiones se versionan, pero este se encuentra en la National Portrait Gallery y lo realizó su hermano Branwell, por lo que le doy credibilidad.

Si la figura de Emily, al igual que la de todos los miembros Brontë, han sido reiterado e insistente objetivo desde que recuerdo, de mi más ferviente interés, admiración y sobre todo fascinación, esta biografía tan maravillosa de Winifred Gérin ha multiplicado infinitamente ese deslumbramiento y mi respeto, reconocimiento y aprecio por la misteriosa Emily Brontë como poeta, escritora y ser humano.

Necesito ahora, encarecidamente, el resto de biografías galardonadas escritas por Winifred Gérin, que dedicó toda su vida a escribir las de Anne, Charlotte, Emily y Bramwell, así como su mayor éxito: "Charlotte Brontë:The evolucion of genius"

Puede considerarse una de las mejores biografías de Emily Brontë, una mujer valiente, un pilar fundamental en la familia, y un ser excepcional que jamás pudo ser comprendido fuera de su entorno familiar.

La documentación por medio de cartas y datos de archivo en esta obra es de una magnitud tan grande, que un solo agradecimiento a Winifred Gérin por semejante trabajo sería quedarse corto.

Había leído biografías de las tres hermanas pero ninguna individual. Este acercamiento a la vida y obra de Emily me ha aportado mucho sobre su personalidad. Creo que ahora la comprendo mejor y sitúo algunos aspectos de Cumbres borrascosas.
De lo mejor que he leído sobre las Brontë.

Engaging biography spoiled in last pages by rampant speculative psycho-analysis of the cause of Bronte's death (she claimed it was psychosomatic and Bronte wanted death!) I also found myself becoming increasingly sceptical at the idea Bronte was a 'mystic'. I think the context of widespread Victorian Protestantism and religion at the time has to be considered when assessing how the Brontes wrote about 'spiritual' matters, and the romanticising of Emily as a 'mystic' is problematic anyway. It's a shame that what was a good read (notwithstanding the other problematic psychogenic explanation often given for Emily Bronte's illness at Roe Head School) did unfortunately degenerate into an incoherent, implausible attempt to espouse a psychogenic explanation for what was certified as tuberculosis (though notwithstanding medical uncertainty and lack of knowledge at the time about respiratory disease).

While "The Dark Quartet" may be a more entertaining read on the life of the Brontes, this biography provides an exceptionally thorough and intriguing discussion on the most reclusive (and BRILLIANT) of the foursome. Emily Bronte was,without question, the GREATEST writer the world has ever seen - and will ever see! Gerin does an admirable job in exploring both the mundane and the mystical experiences and influences that led to the creation of the Gondal saga, the poetry - and, of course, that TOWERING MASTERPIECE of UNLIMITED CREATIVE GENIUS "Wuthering Heights". As an effort to probe into the mind of the most
GOD-GIFTED individual ever born, this biography is well worth the read!

Uncovering the elusive, reclusive author of Wuthering Heights - no easy task. But carried out beautifully by Gerin. A must read for all Bronte fans.

This is my first Bronte biography by Winifred Gerin, who apparently wrote a separate biography for all of them (next up: Charlotte). It's a short book yet more full of speculation than facts, which is sort of the problem with Emily's life: there is so much we don't know that you can basically make it up -- and indeed almost have to. The book quotes from the poetry a lot (which I liked) and argues that Emily was a mystic who at some point toward the end of her life stopped hearing her mystical voices, which plunged her into despair. Also a lot of speculation about how in she fell out with Charlotte, partly because of how Charlotte and the rest of the family treated Branwell, which was interesting but also ultimately speculative.

Just great, really! I am a big admirer of the Brontës and of Emily in particular and have read other biographies about her and the family before. Gérin's appears not only excellently researched but written in an engaging and emotionally captivating manner. It took me quite a while to read the whole book but then this was more for want of studying it at my own pace rather than racing through it to have it finished. If you are interested in Emily Brontë's life then I suggest this is a must-read! Enjoy.

This is a very sympathetic work that gave me a sense of Emily Bronte's greatness and oddness, both as a person and in terms of her writing. Her's is an heroic, tragic story, carefully and thoroughly told by Winifred Gerin.
