MacRieve IAD #13: 5 STARS OF OH MY GOD

Lets start this review off with a celebratory twerk for this great novel.

I would like to just say that this book is amazing. freaking obviously Read it, love it, review it...whatever. NOW, STOP READING HERE if you can't take a spoiler because I'm about to spoil your worllllllld. I know what you're thinking, just use the spoiler html formatting thingy...well no. I hate how that looks. KAY NOW FOR THE FUN PART.

OH. MY. LORD.

This book was everything the doctor ordered. Unfortunately for me, KC has been giving me a huge heaping of disappointment lately. I tried to get in to her Arcana Chronicles series with her debut YA novel , Poison Princess. However, I ended up DNFing it which was the biggest shocker ever. As everyone knows, I'm a complete KC fangirl freakazoid. That being said, DNFing a novel by KC was akin to being stabbed in the heart. Then, the second blow was her Shadow's Claim novel which i actually had lukewarm feelings toward. That being said, I approached this Macrieve book with a modicum of apprehension. However, it was a just a fabulous as her other 12 IAD novels and kept me on my toes.

I've always adored how she writes Lykae. They brood the best, sound the best, seemingly look the best, screw the best, and well...are just generally the best in my opinion. There is nothing like a KC valkyrie or Lykae. SHE WROTE THE HELL OUT OF THIS NOVEL. MacRieve, or Will, was a man after my own heart. I hated him at times and loved him at times. Which , I think is the mark of good writing. Similarly, I really liked Chloe. I didn't think I would like her. She's butcher than most romance heroines. Also, naturally, like most people who read romance novels I tend to be overly critical of my heroines. A trait i really must overcome. However, I ended up adoring chloe. She had spunk and intellgience. Similarly, she knew when to forgive, when to rage, and when to love. Her timing was impeccable and her feelings were understood. The fact that she ended up being a succubus was crazzzzzzzy. I'll admit that I didn't see that coming. However, I totally should have. It was nice being introduced to a new species. The fact that chloe ended up being Webb's daughter was HELLA PRICELESS. all i have to say is KC kc, is you okay because that was so crazy!

Anywho, MacRieve pulled it together and Chloe and his reunion was freaking lovely and lit up. As far as steam goes, I must sadly admit that it was no where near the steam that we experienced as readers during Lothaire. Love it or hate that book, the sex in lothaire was so freaking raunchy and creative it had a girl turning up the AC! . However, the sex was still pretty damn good.

Now, lets talk about that FREAKING CLIFF HANGER! I can't believe it ended off like that. HOLY MOLY. Firstly, I kinda slept on the fact that Munroe was even going to get a book. You see, similar to many of you all, I'm chopping at the bits to get to Nix's book. The two books I craved more than anything were Lothaire (CHECK) and now Nix. I excitedly await all books, and I must admit my curiosity for Lanthe and her man almost know no bounds, however, NIX's book keeps me at night. Ok, not really, but It might tonight! So, now I know that more than likely, we will have to wait for, Furie and Kristoff, Lanthe and her Vrekner, and Munroe and his rather illfated human/werewolf basketcase.... THATS THREE BOOKS. At her pace of one book a year that means that we could possibly not know about nix until the year 2016-2017. I might perish.

Now for the crazy spoiler predictions that if you don't want to kind of figure out my thoughts on Nix's mate then you should stop reading now. I beg you, don't let me be the ruiner of your series, even If there is a chance that I'm wrong!

Oh kay dooookie. I beleve, in my heart of hearts, that Nix and Webb are mates. I'm not usually wrong about televison and literature predictions. Also, I had been mulling over this for a while. It makes complete and total sense. Firstly, nix is the beloved character. Moret than likely, the series will end ( i know just saying that this series could end makes me want to chain KC to a microsoft word document as my paranormal romance writer slave....okay that might have been overboard) on Nix's book. That being said, it would make sense that her book needs to go out with a fudging bang. Secondly, Nix is the biggest power player in the game. It seems fitting that she mate with Webb another HUGE POWERPLAYER. It would be hella ironic that the woman who helps all would go for the man who hurts all. Then, this book unveiled the shocker of the year, which not to be cocky I kind of suspected, that webb is FUCKING IMMORTAL. He is by far the most unstable and strong lorean anomaly ever IMHO. I mean he has about 4-5 different species in him. He's got lothaire, a fey, malkolm, and Ullieam in him. I mean DAMN. He is fucking lorean mixed drink. Also, he is freaking crazzzzzy. He sounds like the hitler of the lore. Not to mention nix said that he couldn't be harmed. And he mentioned being crossed by an ally. The only major ally who crosses anyone is nix. WHEW, glad I got all that out.


I'm dying to know everything about this series. There are so many matings and theories bumping through my head as You can see by my jumbled review. I aplogize for the spoilers if you didn't heed my warning. I also apologize for the grammar. I'm too excited after just finishing this book and I'm also tired. Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised to wake up and find out that this review is just one big ol' run on sentence. In conclusion, I loved this book and totally recommend it!

UPDATE: 6-1-2013 THIS HAS SPOILERS REGARDING THE EXCERPT

Okay, so KC has released the excerpt from chapter three i believe. Also, she released a huge excerpt of a full chapter 7, HOWEVER, one must buy a copy (kindle version) of The warlord Wants (i cant remember the full name) which is .99 cents on Amazon. I opted out of that beceause I'm a cheapskate. Anywho, IT WAS A DAMN GOOD EXCERPT. I had noooo freaking idea that Ullieam's excistance was shrouded in such sadness. It Hurt my heart It did. We'll see if I like the heroine. I have no idea if I do or not because the excerpt focused little on her. All we know is that she plays soccer (futbol) and she's transforming into SOMETHING. KC said it was something we haven't encountered so that rules out demons, vamp, valkyrie, sorceress, and witch. However, i'm scared because I don't believe in this point of the book Ulieman has experienced his Vivisection and stint in the Center!!! :[[[[ I have a feeling that our hearts will be breaking during this book, but I have faith in KCs ability to give a good story and a HEA. Well, heres to hoping that this is better than her last book shadow's claim... :)

So I might be late but whatever. I just read the full description for the book which releases a lot of GASP-worthy details. I think I'm gonna love this book. I pretty much hated the last book, she wrote for the spin off series, However this one sounds like its back to the KC i've grown to love.

2. The heroine has gone through adversity and is human

YAY, it seems like it will be a combination of Lothaire and Conrads book as far as themes go , I think. I'm excited. THOUGHTS, CONCERNS ?????

2.5 stars. I was all into this book in the beginning. Its dark undertones appealed right away and then when Will first meets his Chloe, it was a lot of badassery with a touch of love struck wolf. I was eating it all right up. Then... something happens that made Will do a 180. While I get the dude was hurt by his past, he takes it out so badly on that poor girl that I was legit wishing for a separation and dissolution. I'm talking about next level douchedom happening to a girl who has lost EVERYTHING. It gets bad enough for her that her life is in danger. That was the biggest turnoff. Ugh. Do they reconcile? Yes, but by then the infinitesimal effort he puts into the reunion makes absolutely no difference to me. His turnaround was completely conditional on one thing and I call BS. All my stars are for Chloe for her spunk, smart mouth, drive, and for breaking the mold people wanted her to fit. Will can go into the flames with my blessing. Safety: I would consider what the H does to Chloe emotional abuse. There is rape.

My reaction anytime I hear a new IAD installment is coming out:



Me when I get my hands on any new Kresley Cole, she's a goddess among authors, I say. I vow it to the Lore. Thirteen books in and I'm still reading the series?!



When I'm reading a new IAD installment:




I devour the words because Kresley Cole is just crazy good.

How so?

I've been wanting Lanthe and Thronos' story for ages...I'm not even going to go to Nix because her story I expect to be epic and she's a special case. She'll need time to fully cook her masterpiece swan song.

So let's just say I have a major case of blue balls for Lanthe/Thronos. My non existent ballocks...ache for their story.



So when I learned that the next story after Lathaire's was going to be a Lykae story and another MacRieve at that..let's just say I was not the happiest camper.



So I expected to enjoy the story but not fully because I want Lanthe/Thronos action.

Consider me surprised with how touching Ullieam is. How much I craved his story and I didn't even know it. I can honestly say this was a turn in the right direction. And this twin arc/thing started...I'm too intrigued to not want it finished. Please don't make me wait two years for the next one.

Ullieam he's so damaged and I did not expect the depth of his angst. I was so angry, saddened and upset with what happened. All those emotions in just a prologue?



Seriously my feels list is long with this book. It goes all over the place.

And Chloe was such a fitting mate for Macrieve. She was such a kind person, totally did not see her being the species she turned out to be. But her species was so interesting to learn about.

Chloe is a smart ass, Ullieam is a damaged, possessive ass. We get to meet a handful of new characters, we get Nix crumbs (I love that crazy bitch!), a trip back to Scotland and glimpses of the next book set up. There's hot sex, crazy plot twists and fitting HEA. My favorite thing about the couple? The ease they had when they actually communicated, they had each other's back 100% and it was just really nice. An athlete heroine with no sinister secrets, I thought it was a nice change of pace.

My favorite quote? The entire book. Down to every period, comma, quotation mark...everything. Still fresh hilarious, serious, crazy good writing...still deliciously Kresley Cole.



And the way the story ended?

-Chloe and Ullieam - they deserved each other and once again I lurve another MacRieve Lykae. He's not my favorite Lykae. That spot seems to be reserved by Garreth <3 But I have a feeling Munro might shake up my Lykae fave hierachy. My favorite hero will forever be Cadeon, my sexy demon. (with Malkolm on the side)

-The cliffhanger ending - holy shite is it going to be a doozy.

Another amazing instalment in this series and a new favourite! 😍
It was so good, I couldn’t get enough!

To sum it up, this is a story that surrounds trauma. Major trigger warnings for childhood sexual assault, depression, suicidal ideation, loss of loved ones.

This aspect to the story was heartbreaking.
The hero was abused/groomed as a young child but didn’t realise it, neither came to terms with it till he was much more older.

“You need to re-break that bone. It didn’t set right.”

He thought that by finding his mate, he’d be okay. That whatever was dying inside him would be fixed but it was only the start of him having to deal with his ordeal.

Especially when he finds out that his mate is someone that he wasn’t expecting to be.

“Fate is our faith.”

This was such an incredible journey. It was realistic, though we’re dealing with paranormal creatures. The emotions and his struggles are still very much human.

I absolutely adore how Kresley Cole has written this series. The themes are incredible!

Seeing these paranormal creatures being paired with those they never could fathom to be with—due to fate—is always so fascinating to read about.

Because you see them forced to come to face with their prejudices, even though their assumptions may have been rooted in fact. They’re still challenged, they’re forced to become better by becoming the worst version of themselves.

It’s dissecting human emotions at its finest and Kresley Cole did the damn thing! 😍

P.S. we got a glimpse as to how Munro’s story, who’s the twin brother of the hero here, will play out in his book and I’m gagging to get to it!

Uilleam MacRieve (Lycae) and Chloe Todd (half human/half succubus)

Fooball/soccer is certainly my favourite sport since I was a kid. Thus, I loved each football reference that is used by the characters.
On the other hand, the book was the saddest so far in the series. It deals mainly with child sexual abuse that has left an open wound to a fearless warrior and it has not healed for 900 years.

“I know I’m wrong in the head! I want to be . . . right. For you."

This book started off very well I believed that this was gonna be my next favorite after the other books, which I marked it as worthy re-reading. But then, you know, it was all blew up. Uilleam aka Will turns to be a real jerk when he finds out about his human, Chloe , even though he has his reasons to be angry, yet it's unforgivable and pretty awkward.

“She pressed a single soft kiss over his heart, having no idea he’d just given it to her.”

Will being tortured when he was a child tried to run away from what he has been through all his life, then he finds his mate and that connection is hard to ignore, so he follows along. While Chloe is pushed into her new world that she knows nothing about, she meets Will, it's so fortunate she has this man to guide her and be taken care of.



I almost believed that MacRieve would be full of sugar. The couple is excellent, they're supposed to be together since their first meet. Yet something happens, and it drives them away. Although I didn't like this book as I expected, I still adored some material, such as Will's scottish accent an Chloe's will.

“He was so domineering. And a dirty talker. Apparently, she liked both. A lot.”

The sex scenes are extremely hot as always. I liked how Kresley Cole managed to slowly build up tension and the way she released it was potentially remarkable.

3/5 ⭐️ This started off so freaking good but Will’s treatment of Chloe when he found out what she was, just didn’t sit right with me. He said some nasty things to her and I understand it was because of his past trauma but it still bothered me. I just couldn’t look past it.

I did shed a few tears reading the prologue 😭. That vile woman robbed him of his youth and it broke me. I just wanted to give young Will a hug 🥺.

I did enjoy the beginning sooo much! Will was being so sweet towards Chloe but then he changed. And I know his trauma was really why but I didn’t love how he treated Chloe. She was my favorite thing about this book. I fell for her instantly! She was strong, sassy, sweet, and funny.

Overall, I still enjoyed some parts so it wasn’t so bad. I also still very much adore this series!

Edit 2/11/2013: Ack, what is wrong with that cover? (Although I still like this better than Lothaire's cover, which I despise.) And that eye. Even I can Photoshop a better eye than that. It's just... oddly flat and pale and dead looking, and also appears to be looking up, rather than at you. And the highlight doesn't seem to match the light source.

9/21/2012: I just have to say... 25% of IAD heroes so far have been named MacRieve. What about Uilleam makes him THE MacRieve? He's MacRieve #4, and presumably we'll get MacRieve #5 eventually, as well, with his twin. (What will Munro's book be called, anyway? MacRieve II?) Lothaire is Lothaire, and that's unique enough to make an interesting title, but MacRieve just doesn't have the same ring to it. I may not be able to tell any of the other IAD titles apart, but I like this even less.

Oh, well, it's Kresley Cole. I'm sure I'll love it, even with a silly title.

Uilleam MacRieve, aka Will, aka MacRieve, is a haunted, tortured Lykae who has not ever been able to get over his past. Oh yes, he's tried to run, block it out, sex it out and drink it out but nothing has worked. Then he gets a call from Nucking-Futs Nïx, aka Nïx the Ever-Knowing, and a whole new chain of events are set in motion.

The one thing that KC can do oh-so-well is "the chase". I don't think I've ever read another series where it's been handled so well and so thoroughly. I've read a few complaints of this being the same ol, same ol and I guess if I was reading the books back to back that might be a problem but after a year wait, I am "ravening" for it!



I really enjoy reading about tortured heroes and MacRieve certainly fits the bill. But...but, he is a teensy bit of a meanie. You would think after reading Lothaire, I would be over it but apparently not. Once he finds out about Chloe...he is way too harsh. Some of that is understandable but I just felt it was a bit over the top.

Chloe was wonderful and just very go with the flow and as she likes to say "rub some dirt in it". I loved that! I think with everything she goes through, she would have to be one tough cookie. I hated how she was treated and left to figure out everything on her own.

And then there's Munro! I LOVE him!! Obviously, almost nothings better than some yummy Scottish Alpha weres but throw in a soft side and I'm a goner! We do get a tiny glimpse of his story in the Epilogue...it sounds very interesting. Oh yes...I love Munro's and MacRieve's nicknames...

Hot...and Hotter??? Count me in!!!



There is a ton of sexual tension and some steamy scenes and once you find out about Chloe, you will know why. I do wish there was a more romance but oh well, guess you have to make do with the dirty talker, MacRieve.

We also get the ongoing back story which I thought was interesting but almost a little far-fetched. Not sure I'm buying it but I'm going to withhold judgment for now. I do LOVE Nïx's involvement but it's almost become the norm instead of being surprised by it.

We did get to meet some new Lykaes and "other" creatures that could possibly have stories in the future...you never know. I was disappointed not to get some of my yummy Lothaire. It would have been icing on the cake.

Hopefully, Munro's story is up next but we will probably have to wait a year! Either way, I'll be ready. And if you enjoyed Poison Princess, there is an excerpt for the next book in the series, Endless Knight, with the yummy Cajun...can't wait for the book!

Hmmmmm Okay well I will keep this short and to the point. I had a hard time with this book. I could see that Uilleam was sexual abused as a child by a succubus and that he feels guilty for his parents and lil sister's death and I get that he was tortured by the Order and that he was almost raped by 5 succubus ok I so get it. I could even understand that it would make his angry to find his mate and find out she was part succubus but damn he was the biggest prick I have ever seen he wasn't just mean or stand offish or even angry he was abusive and hateful to the point that I couldn't see how she could fall in love with him he was only kinda nice for like a few days then he treats her like total dog shit for almost the whole book whats not to love right! and the way he acted made it hard for me to feel sorry for him and what happened to him, and I feel that book didn't give him enough time to kiss ass and make up for it there just wasn't enough romance. I feel disappointed in this book its the first one in the whole series that I didn't freakin love and it's a shame too because I loved Chloe. She was awesome. I mean My God the first time they have sex (her first time ever by the way) he gets shit faced still goes soft, tags in his wolf to finish and pukes afterwards so sexy. So in closing Blah!

If Kresley Cole wanted to crush my heart to smithereens,then she succeeded!Engrossing,carnal and heart-rending,"MacRieve" is the 13:th instalment in Kresley Cole`s Paranormal "Immortals After Dark"-series.How i have missed this series and this world of mystical creatures and how glad i am to get back to the MacRieve clan.In this book we have the scottish cold-hearted and tortured alpha lykae "Will" Uilleam MacRieve who have lived all his existence in agony because of his part in what ultimately got his parents killed when he was just a teenager.In the former books he was a captive of the Order and got tortured in the most brutal of ways.No wonder he can`t stand the thought of even breathing anymore and plans to get revenge before he dies at his own will.But fate has other plans when he finds his fated soulmate in the daughter of his enemy.

Oh boy can this author deliver.I say it again:OH BOYYY!I never thought anyone could deliver a trope like lovers-to enemies to lovers again kind of story.It does sound messy but i LOVED IT!Although i did not see that twist coming!Chloe Todd is a professional soccer player and so damn sassy and badass that i clapped my hands at her.DAMN she could trash-talk and diss Will like no tommorow!She took no shit and was such a fighter to the core.No wonder Will never could resist her!"Will" Ullileam MacRieve made my heart break while he also made me want to hug him.His thoughts are so grim,unhappy and painful because of what that disgusting perverted succubus did to him when he was just a kid.How his parents died because of her.And how Will and his twin-brother Munro had to live alone together,relentlessly yearning for their mates to cure them of their loneliness.I love how vulnerable Will was to Chloe when he first smelled her scent and felt unsure of his looks and even switched shirts with Munro!I mean awwww!How he saves her and woos her with his charm..ahh even i fell in love with this sexy dirty talking scottish lykae!Will and Chloe together are fire on pages.Their journey in falling in love is extraordinary and i swooned in their every scene of passion,tears and anger!Came to love this whole package of a book! MacRieve follows up the story arc of the Order and in a huge way. I loved how Cole ties things together. Who would have thunk the Lore community would be so connected.

MacRieve might be one of the most tortured IAD heroes. His experiences as a preteen damaged him severely and as such, he has no hope of finding his mate or for his matehood to be normal. And it also gave him a violent hatred for succubi, which is going to be a problem. When he hears that there is a young woman that everyone wants because she's Webb's daughter (the leader of the Order-a group of humans who are out to exterminate all the Loreans), he shows up to get revenge on his enemy, and isn't above using his daughter, and recognizes his mate. That's not the beginning of a happy ever after. No there is a lot of pain ahead.

At times, MacRieve was a real mean bastard. I had to remind myself how damaged his was from his youthful experiences with a succubus. It didn't condone the way he treats Chloe, but it does give me understanding into why he was behaving that way. I did like how beautifully he changes and convincingly loves Chloe. I just wish he had done so a little sooner.

I loved Chloe. This is one of those instances where the heroine makes the book. She was awesome. I don't know much about Soccer, but she made me look up some women soccer players. I liked that she was very focused on her soccer and was fearless on the field despite her small size. That determination served her in good stead in her experiences with MacRieve.

I did also love hanging out with the New Orleans compound Lykae, including MacRieve, his brother Munro and the two young Lykae they are fostering until they get control of their wolves. I gained a lot more insight into the world of the Lykae with this book, and it was enlightening and fun. The world has gotten bigger with each book, and I find it more fascinating the more I learn about the Lore.

I wasn't really that interested in MacRieve before I read this book, but i could hardly put it down. MacRieve did win me over, but I think I loved Chloe even more than I loved him. I'm glad that he found his mate and that they realized how much they loved each other. I'm verra curious to see what will happen with Munro and his mate.

With so many paranormal romance authors work out there (even I know that some people think that PNR and UF now become less popular compare to the latest trend), Kresley Cole is one of those authors that still shine in the pararomancelandia (my term) and her Immortals After Dark seroes will always be my guilty pleasure read!

For me, I never become a fans of Lykae (don't throw something on me!) and prefer the vampires of IAD series (they're yummy. And lovable. And devoted. And less jerk). From Lachlan (who to much have macho vibe), Bowen (who said another woman name when he had sex with Mariketa. Ick!), to Garreth (who... I don't remember his story to be honest :P) and now into Uilleam MacRieve. Longtime fans of IAD already know him and his twin Munro from A Hunger Like No Other. Known as Hot and Hotter, these twins stole fans attention. Especially Ulliam after the event from Demon from the Dark, when he got tortured, vivisected, and meet his nightmare in the form of succubus. We don't know why, but readers will finally find the answer in MacRieve.

The story begin with a glimpse into Uilleam's horrible past, as he become victim of a succubae. Fast forward centuries later and the past still haunted him. With Uilleam still recovered from his torture and Munro become desperate to save his stubborn vampire, they got news that the witches captured Commander Webb's daughter. Bend on his revenge, Uilleam and Munro go to the auction, just to realize that his enemy's daughter is his mate.

Chloe Todd have a bright future as a soccer athlete, but her world turn upside down after she become auctioned for thing that she doesn't understand. Lucky for Chloe because Uilleam save her and claimed Chloe as her mate. But, fate is a bitch and she throw another challenge to this new couple with Chloe suddenly reach her maturity and become...succubus. A bad news for Uilleam indeed, for he can't fight his instinct, yet Chloe is everything that he despised.

I really dislike Uilleam and I don't get why he insist everyone to call him MacRieve. I think he never did that in previous books. He's a jerk, over and over. Not just to Chloe, but Munro as well! I know that his childhood past was so fucked up,and sometimes time can't heal a wound deep in the heart. But, really, 9 centuries and Uilleam still act as coward, still not brave to face his demon. To let his own prejudice.

On the other side, I really love Chloe! This girl is an athlette (soccer too!) and I know that she was though even with all Uilleam's taunting. Chloe is a girl that I want to become BFF with and I think she better with Munro, because Munro respect her, rather than her own mate! Anyhow, I wish that KC don't write her heroines as petite women. I know it's kinda weird. My height just 5 ft, and Chloe is taller than me by 3 inch. But, Uilleam is friggin tall, like almost 7 feet tall, and if I become Chloe, I will feel... dwarfed. Almost all IAD heroines are petite. I don't mind if their height fall into supermodel kind, tho.

I think that MacRieve like a filler book and the main story is just how Uilleam and Chloe work their messed up relationship. There's no big, bad villain. The villain actually is Uilleam, like what Munro said, for Uilleam's act toward Chloe was kinda unforgivable. That's why he's fallen into unlikable hero in IAD world, lol! The ending kinda have a cliffhanger and heartwrenching too. I want to hug Munro, and I hope he will finally become Lykae that I loved with. There are new Lykaes too, like Ben and Ronan who become comic relief. And some appearance from Chloe's succubus family that finally change Uilleam's view of Chloe.

Ummm,MacRieve?

I understand why Lothaire's book called LOTHAIRE, since we all know from the beginning he just known by name "Lothaire" only, not Lothaire Konstantin Daciano. Even this book isabout Uilleam, he's just...not steal attention as big as Lothaire. So, is the naming of this book suit Lothaire's? Sometimes I prefer the previous book title. Maybe this book can be titled like "Dancing with Wolves Prince" or" The Dark Wolf",or something like that.

"You've been told that the Pravus males will gang rape you, and still you seek to leave. Mayhap you crave it from them?" He turned and strode away.

"Prick!" She lined up two balls. Taking aim, she reared back and kicked the first as hard as she could. The second followed in quick succession.

As planned, the first took him in the back of the head. When he spun around, the second nailed him in the testicles.

"What...the...fuck?" He gritted his teeth, but remained standing.

As others tried ti hide their laughter, she shrugged. "Penalty".

He bared his fangs at her, stalking off to the sound of Ronan singing the soccer anthem, "Oleeee, ole, ole, oleeeee..."

He was so domineering. And a dirty talker. Apparently, she liked both.



That is totally me right now. Yes, fairy wings and all. Why you ask? Well, because I'm fun and eccentric that way. But mainly, it's because I just read a Kresley Cole book and IT.WAS.AWESOME!

I admit that after reading some mixed reviews on this book, I had put off reading it. I have loved every book i this series, and I was terrified that book 13 might take me off of my IAD buzz.

I should have known better. Kresley definitely did not disappoint! MacRieve turned out being so much better than I even hoped. Now this might have been a case of not having any expectations while going into the book. But whatever the reason may have been, I couldn't put it down until I read the very last page.

The one thing that I have to give praise for, is to this day IAD books continue to focus on only 2 POVs. While there is a whole lot of world building and action that takes place, I never see it take away from the main couple. There are no unnecessary side characters POVs. We get to touch base with many favorite characters, like my personal favorite Nix (and her bat), but the main focus is the couple.

The one thing that I definitely did notice change, is the books are certainly becoming much more sexual. Or at least this one was. Which you will not find this girl complaining about. But then again, I'm a smut connoisseur :)

So finally we get the story of the first half of the Hot and Hotter twins, MacRieve. And let me tell you, it was quite brutal. Poor Will has been through quite a bit in his long life, with the recent addition of his stint in The Order's prison and favorite play thing of a demented scientist.

When he escapes the prison, he's not quite right. And then his life takes a turn when he unexpectedly finds his mate.

Kresley Cole has yet to write a heroine that I haven't loved, and Chloe was no exception. I loved her sass, and the way she stood up to everyone, even MacRieve.

Of course we had to get some angst, when a particular secret comes out and throws their mating for a loop. My sexy MacRieve goes from sweet to complete and utter asshole in no time flat.

Luckily for me, I like that sort of thing. When the hero makes mistakes and treats the heroine like dirt, but then has to grovel to make up for it? Oh yea! I am ALL over that.

He also happened to be a dirty talker. Which if you follow my reviews, you know is an Achilles heel of mine. Plus the steam in this book? Sweet mother! I'd say this is the steamiest book in the series.


I can see why some reviewers found him to be a little excessive in his anger. but considering his past and what he's been through, I understood it, and it didn't bother me much. Considering that he was able to suppress his beast on a full moon for her, which was huge, he did his best to make up for his mistakes with Chloe.

We also get the set-up for Munro's book, which was a hell of a start. I'm really looking forward to finding out what happens there. But according to Kresley Cole, we will be getting Lanthe and Thronos next. Can't wait to see what that brings. I've been looking forward to their book since Demon From The Dark.

13 books in the series, and still going strong. This has definitely become one of my favorite PNR series, so a huge rec from me.

MacRieve is the thirteen instalment in the Immortals After Dark series. I’ve been eagerly waiting for this book for 18 months or so. I simply LOVE this series. For me this is one of the best in the paranormal romance genre. I also love Kresley Cole's historical romances, and when I loved her first foray in the YA genre (a genre I really don’t like) I thought that she definitely couldn’t disappoint me whatever she wrote.

I was wrong.

With Shadow’s Claim (The Dacians #1 — a spinoff of the IAD series) and this one, I was disappointed.

This book is directly linked to book 11 (Dreams of a Dark Warrior) and it started really good but in the end it didn’t deliver.

MacRieve aka Uilleam aka Will aka one half of the Hot and Hotter duet aka head case, is the epitome of the tortured hero. He really had to deal with a lot and I really liked him, even when he wasn’t so nice with Chloe.

Chloe starts as a witty, cheeky, strong and resourceful heroine. When something bad happens to her, her motto is “rub some dirt on it and move on”. Unfortunately, as the book went on so did her spunk.

The plot didn’t help, simply because there was no plot whatsoever. Worse, there was no action. Furthermore, a lot of things/reactions didn’t make sense for me and there was too many too easy coincidences or about turns. And what happened with Chloe’s father? Really??? *rolls eyes*

I’m sad to say that the short epilogue with its bloody cliffhanger was more interesting than the book itself. Hopefully, Munro’s book will be better than his twin’s.

4.5 stars. Despite the questionable cover, it was pretty darned freaking awesome. Hungry for the next one, which the epilogue set up quite deliciously. *smacks lips* Will, that gorgeous Lykae, was a fab alpha hero, and Chloe was a spunky and sweet foil to his harshness. Even though the "surprises" were rather guessable, I loved how they were handled and worked through. Yay, Kresley Cole!

This is completely spoiler ridden - you've been warned.

2 stars = okay. I didn’t hate this book exactly but I didn’t exactly like it either. After a sad little prolog (where a predatory succubus female ensnared the thirteen year old Will resulting in the death of three fifths of his family), and a reminder of what he suffered under the Order’s tender care a couple of books back (vivisection) we get that Will has Issues with a capitol ‘I’. In fact he’s thinking of ending it all until Will goes to an auction where Chloe,the daughter of the hated leader of the Order, is up for sale and Will discovers that Chloe is his mate. Well, it’s an immediate battle for Chloe's life, because all of the Lore wants revenge. In the heat of the conflict, Will's instinct to protect his mate overcomes Cloe’s father's genetic contribution to her existence fairly easily and gives him a new lease on life.

After the spending the ‘best day ever’ in his 900 year life with Cloe however, the other half of Chloe’s genes kick in and her mother’s contribution turns Chloe into a succubus and Will into a deplorable bastard, and for an agonizingly long portion of the book Will is absolutely horrible to her. Will can’t quite let Chloe go because his instincts say ‘mine’ and ‘protect’ – but the person she really needs protection from is him and his psychological abuse – and when he finally decides to take a bullet for the team because he can’t let her go and Chloe is starving to death trying to deny her 'hateful nature' and he decides to ‘feed’ her, during their first time together (and her first time ever} Will has to check out and let his ‘beast’ finish the deed and then he vomits immediately afterward – what a nice tender moment.

Okay, Chloe is this amazing person and puts enough clues together to figure out the secret Will’s keeping about his childhood and why he hates her race so much, and somehow decides that she loves him – despite his abominable treatment. After impending death for her, he finally has a change of heart when he realizes that he could lose his mate altogether, and he finds out that succubi aren’t all as evil as his first ‘love’, he and Chloe finally have a two sided mating (because succubi have the equivalent of mates too and they don’t drain them dry.) So they live happily ever after, I guess, since instead of a real epilog, we get the teaser for the next book – for MacReive’s brother Munro, who was a super sweetie to Chloe in this book.

So, I could have handled the blow up of the conflict between the starring pair a little better if it was a bit more agonizing for Will and a bit less acting out in anger and hatred - Will just lost all of my sympathy at that point. And there really wasn’t enough romance later on in the book to make up for it. Which is too bad, because the relationship is really all that happens in the book and it just isn’t strong enough to be ‘enough’ on its own. This book needed more of something – more Nix or valkyries or more of Chloe's father’s scheme maybe - instead of that we just get Chloe's aunt stepping in with the quick fix info that solves everything.

Alrighty then, so all of that makes me sound like I passionately hated this, but actually when I read through it, I was just disconnected. As a result, my resulting ‘meh’ ends up being an ‘okay’ in the star department.

My least favorite book in the IAD series.

Will was an asshole for the entire book. Yeah, yeah, poor little Willie has a Sad Past (and said Sad Past was pretty weak compared to what we've previously seen in this series)... Poor little Willie was a prejudiced bastard and that's all there was to it. Said prejudiced bastard saw the light (of course) in the blink of an eye at the very end of the book when he's taken to Succubus Land and sees that everybody's nice and harmless. Then he's like: "My wee little mate was innocent all this time? I'm in love!".

You've got to be kidding me. That's such a huge romance fail. And I'm surprised Cole went this route because she usually has her heroes being slavishly devoted to their heroines, no matter their "evilness" level.

And I don't know what to think of Chloe. When she learned of his past, she was all "Poor little Willie. No wonder he mistreated / hurt / abused / insulted me all this time. He had just cause. He needs my love. How can I ever make it right for him?" *gah*

On the other hand, she was kind of stuck in a lose-lose situation: abandoned by her father, having no allies and no clue how to survive in the Lore, getting weaker and weaker etc... Her only way out was Bastard Willie. At least he was supposedly a hot bastard. So, Yay?

I'm giving this 2 stars because of the entertainment value of reading the scene with Nix driving her Bentley in reverse for miles and miles with her bat Bertil stuck to her chest.

Here's to hoping Cole will be back on top with the next book in this seemingly neverending series.

Reread 5.3.2019 : maybe it's because it's been so long since I read really good pnr but I think I like this way better on second read even though Uillieam- what an asshat! I literally cried in empathy with Chloe. Fact that it moved me is causing me to upgrade my original review from 3 to 4.

I liked it okay, still very hot, but I'm getting tired of the "I hate you because you're my enemy, but I want you because you're my mate, but I have to hate you" Cole has going on right now- in every single release lately. To make things worse, MacRieve has the same theme of one of the pair thinking themselves in love with someone else before they meet their "true mate" and are dogmatic about loving them...even though they're usually secretly evil...and now dead. (Although, granted, MacRieve realizes the former lover is evil before her death but still, the theme is there.)

I liked this series better before she started writing others. It's like she's phoning it in and that just sucks...

This one was no different. Ullieam MacRieve has been burned bad in the past when an evil creature he thought was his mate used his beast nature against him. But now he's found his mate, the thing every member of the Lykae dreams of, and she's going to set things right.

Of course there's a bump in the road... his mate's new found Lorean (supernatural) nature has come to fore and it's everything that MacRieve hates.

As I've stated already parts of this book I thoroughly enjoyed, KC does know how to smex it up, but it in the end I couldnt get passed the been there, read that feel and the fact that the book felt rather short to be a hardback kinda left a bitter taste in my mouth too.

I hope she gets back in the game soon... because I love this series too much to give up on it.

(Altho from the ending of this one, it looks like Ullieam's twin Munroe's story is shaping up to be exactly the same. sigh)

I loved this to begin with......MacRieve and his tortured past. Really liked Chloe, all in ready for a great read.

Loved how MacRieve was when they first met, but then he just changed, and it was not enjoyable reading. Chloe should have kicked him in the balls and left him to it tbh.

I know he had a tragic past etc, but the man was as dumb as a box of rocks for most of the book tbh, he frustrated me greatly.

Not my favourite at all.

MACRIEVE had all of the usual components that come standard with every IMMORTALS AFTER DARK installment, but it didn't push the envelope like some of the other volumes have which made it kinda ordinary. I haven't formed much of a connection with the hero over the course of this series, so I didn't have a vested interest in his story going in, and Chloe is a stand-up gal and all, although I did find her too agreeable at times.

In this book Kresley Cole expands upon a supe that has yet to take center stage in this series, and normally I'd put a spoiler alert here as it's not mentioned in the blurb; however I'm a late arrival to this world, and therefore the last to know. Anyway, the author did a sweet job of breathing life—or perhaps more aptly put, sex—into her succubi. Her IAD vision never ceases to amaze!

I enjoyed learning more the events that have shaped MacRieve, and as usual the interconnectivity between the novels; however I did find that the latter was to a lesser extent than normal which was somewhat disappointing. I also wasn't a huge fan of the ending; Cole hasn't left us in limbo much, so I'm bummed that the next volume isn't about you-know-who after that cliffhanger!

Robert Petkoff didn't really have to reinvent the wheel in this installment, but his sexy Scotish werewolf voices will never get old, and he conveyed Chloe's boundless energy very well. There were also a number of never-before-seen secondaries that he had to drum up one-of-a-kind narration for which he of course did with ease, and Nix's cameos continue to be personal favourites.

MACRIEVE, despite being about an alpha, was a middle of the pack audiobook.

Am I the only one who thought this story was similar to Bowen's? We have a tormented werewolf who had once thought he had found his mate (but was tricked!) and who now hates his newfound mate's species and is an ass because. I don't know, it just came to mind. As I wasn't the biggest fan of Bo's story either...

I simply found this story and the pacing odd. And at the same time predictable. I mean, the first half is idyllic and happy-happy, and yet you know what will happen, and yes it does, and it's all angst=angst until our boy comes to his senses. It was a bit...slow for me.

Still love KC and her world and characters (and our girl's a mean soccer player. Go Chloe!). It was just a bit of a letdown after Lothaire. I loved that book!

My initial reaction to reading this book;





First, let me just say (or rather reiterate) that Kresley is a master story teller. She's got the whole paralell-simultaneous-story-plot-weaving-master-piece thing rocking on. I've read and re-read the IAD series over and again, picking up on new things every time.

But she just completely blew me out of the water (and a little out of my mind) with Will and Chloe's story.

For me, Uilleam and Monroe (the hot and hotter twins) were quietly simmering in the background of the Lore on the cusp of Ascension. I liked them, but I must admit I was hesitant about her announcing that Will would be next in line for a book.

I was a little more eager for perhaps Lanthe or maybe even Thad. Hell, I wanted Nix!

But an IAD book was an IAD book, so who was I to scoff at Kresley's brilliant grand plan?

Never again. I promise, NEVER AGAIN.

It. Was. BRILLIANT.

Of course.

But, it was HEARTBREAKING. Oh, so very heartbreaking.

Everyone's got issues in life, right?

WRONG!

None so much as Will has. Who'd have thought?

I thought he'd be jovial like Garreth was.

Nope.

In the first few pages, I was confused. Then shocked. Then horrified.

At the end of the first chapter, I was clutching my chest and fighting back sobs; not knowing whether to scream or cry or both.

Let me just say, it was one of her harder books to read. She writes about a very difficult issue that is both soul shattering and a hard hitting social issue that will mist the eyes of more than one reader.

If you don't feel for Will while reading this book, I would question your sanity and moral compass.

Will and Chloe will push some hot topic buttons. In a lot of different ways.

The story enters into Will's early life and what makes him essentially him. His life is shaped by a not one, but two momentous events that forges a hatred and fire like very few I have read about so far.

In my personal opinion he comes close to a level of hatred and prejudice akin to Malkom's in Demon from the Dark, but on a very different subject.

Then on the other hand we have Chloe. Poor, unsuspecting, very human, Chloe.

She's a bit of a fire cracker and a soccer star with her very own fanboy following.

We all know Chloe is not what she seems. And eventually she'll have to turn immortal for the progression of this story. I mean, it wouldn't do well to have Will with a human, right? He'd kill her in the first claiming, right?! (Well, this is how I rationalise in my head as I read.)

Kresley was a tad mysterious in announcing the species of Will's mate. Only saying that her kind hasn't been overly talked about.

And there is a fair amount of mystery surrounding her identity that will keep you guessing. But due to a little foreshadowing in the first part of the book, most will have the same first guess as me. I'll let you read and find that out for yourself.

Chloe is pretty cool. She takes a lot of shit in stride with a fantastic attitude. She adopts a soccer (or sports) mentality of when the game (or life) gets rough, you should just rub some dirt in it. Which is a nice way of saying, take a teaspoon of cement and harden the f*ck up.

Which is great because after her father mysteriously disappears, life turns to shite and she has to more than once adopt the attitude and fight the good fight without breaking down. Hey, if I were in her position, I wouldn't be as brave.

Then she meets Will and everything is sunshine and daisies for a while.

And the sunshine and daisy period was lovely. I found myself going back to that part after I had finished. It was like the calm in the storm. A resting stop for the weary traveller. A harbour in a turbulent sea of rocky conflict. Okay, i'll stop the metaphors.

Actually, it was probably the only time that I really felt at peace with this book. At all other times I was on edge for Will, and on edge for Chloe.

Because sunshine and daisies turned to dust when Will finally cottons on to her real Lore identity.

And he goes major psycho. In a really, really bad way.

But Chloe has no idea what she is, never mind Will's averse reaction to her.

And it takes a lot of time for Will to come to terms with the demons from his past.

Kresley writes an emotional roller coaster of breathtaking highs and stomach-pitting lows that left me dizzy and somewhat jarred from her jerky emotional revelations.

At one moment I was so angry at Will for what he'd said and done to Chloe (mother-trucking bastard!) and then it was all lovey-dovey the next sentence. This is probably the only downside I have to say about this book. Will displays verbally abusive and violent nature that echoes Lachlain's temperament in A Hunger Like No Other.

And I am not for it, no matter what kind of past you've had Lykae! Chloe is left reeling and confused as to why her once enamoured and charming mate is now ferocious, and not in a good way. But like always, she juts her chin out and hardens up by not taking shit from some over-baring male who won't get with sharing his feelings (you go girl!).

But not to fret, there is a HEA. Emotions shared, demons conquered, the day is saved!

It's smart. It's snappy. It's cheesy as all hell, and more than once I was rolling my eyes in amusement for her corny sport references.

I do think it is a brilliant read that will affect a lot of people in a lot of ways.

And in an epilogue that will bring back an group of baddies that we have all forgotten about, (and leave you breathless with more questions than answers!) we realise that perhaps Munroe will be next in line for the forthcoming IAD book. Which makes sense, because the twins are so close.

Overall I am happy, but still somewhat troubled from reading this book. It's a pretty damn powerful story.

It deserves five stars (because Kresley is awesome), but I fear that it will be received a little less warmly only due to the hard hitting content within. But, the best authors are the ones that make us face issues and think about them long after the last page has turned.

And you will think on them.

It is too moving not to.

Frankly, I'm quite disappointed.

I thought that this novel will be as epic as the last one in the series... but sadly, no. :(


Will is a lykae who has a very traumatic past. PAST being the operative term, lemme just say that he blew this book away in a negative way. Chloe is a professional soccer player who's not really a normal human. Unfortunately for her, she gets to be partnered to a guy who hates her kind.


I don't like Will. He's so self-involved and he didn't care much for his mate. Well, he did.. then he didn't .. then poof! HE CARED AGAIN. He was giving me a whiplash. UGHHH. I can't believe how fast he turned on his mate. A mate that he clearly adored before finding out what she really is. It didn't matter that she really didn't know what she was at first. It didn't matter that he was trash talking an innocent and it didn't matter that he SHAMED HER PUBLICLY. I also do not appreciate and can't get over the "VOMITING" scene. I mean.. VOMITING? REALLY? WTF. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?? Then when you DECIDE that you believe her, you expect her to fall right head over heels in a click? AFTER ALL THE HUMILIATION? I can't believe Chloe took him back almost right away. Hmpf. He deserved being broken down and all that! Chloe wasn't even given a fighting chance! her character started on a strong note then ended up being a helpless creature that can only grow stronger wih Will, I know she's caring and all that, I just didn't see her as a wallflower, but that's what happened.


I also didn't like the sports references. I dunno.. it just.. didn't belong? Hmmm..


This book ended in a good way. However, I feel as if something is missing. My friend who I buddy read with would agree with this: This is not a memorable story.

I hope that the next one would be better and when I say better, I MEAN REALLY REALLY BETTER.

Chloe irfandan tamamen habersiz, kendi halinde, futbol turkunu bir kızdır. Hayatında ki her şey planlarına göre giderken kendisinde farklılıklar hissetmeye başlar. Üstün bir duyu, hız, güç... Değişiyordur. Babası ile konuyu konuşmaya çalıştığında ise eline tutuşturulan irfan kitabı ve kocaman bir boşluk ile tek başına kalır. Hatırladığı bir sonraki şey ise başına geçirilmiş bir çuval ve satışta olduğu...

Kitabın başlangıcı cidden üzücü. Daha çok küçük bir yaşta Will'in başına gelenler mide bulandırıcı. Yaşadığı travmayı tahmin bile edemem. Ve bunun yansımaları kaçınılmazdı. Olan Chloe'ya oldu ama... akıllandı sonrasında.

Bence pek bir olayı olan bir kitap değildi. Durağan ve sakindi. Bir an bittiğine inanamadım. Başka bir olaylar olmasını bekledim 🤣 Asıl olay ikizi Munro'da belli ki. Son sahneler insanı merak ettiriyor ama yazar resmen birkaç kitap öteye atmış bizim yiğidoyu😅 bakıcaz artık 😁

This books packs an emotional wallop. Will the lycae mates ever catch a break? They werewolves are always paired with someone who pushes them to their limit.

Chloe is a human, or so she believes. Her father's secrets come out and there's more to learn. The most devastating story belongs to MacRieve. It's tragic and I wonder why I never really noticed his character with the exception of the 'hot and hotter' nickname.

This book has a different feel compared to the other IAD books. It's quieter. Not the action packed adventure in No Rest for the Wicked. Where the action is missing there is subtler story told. For me, this book is another winner by Kresley Cole. Those that felt pushed away by Lothaire's over-the-top antics may find emotional thread in MacRieve more to their liking.

Started off great, then it fizzled out somewhere towards the middle. Not to mention the ending was a little strange for my liking. As much as I adored both the hero and heroine, I found their relationship to be hot one minute; then cold the next.

I would have like to have seen some of the past characters which we were deprived of, although we did get to see Nix in it; even if it was for a little bit. All in all, I liked it, but not loved it. So it's just a 3 stars from moi.
