The Agents for Good #1

Agent with a History

Rate this book
It’s been one long day for Lisa and her headache is living proof of it. Most of it she blamed on the full moon outside. Things always got crazy this time of the month, but this month was exceptional. She needed sleep bad and only hoped the nightmares that haunted her would leave her alone for at least one night. They don’t. She wakes up as usual screaming only to find out that her nightmare has just begun, because she’s not alone in her room.

One man has been gruesomely tortured to death in a ritualistic killing. An entire police precinct has been reconstructed down to the smallest detail in an abandoned warehouse and a mysterious stranger known only as Flint seems to be the cause of it all. It’s a case that is fast turning into one big headache for Lisa Tauranto a detective for the NYPD, but it gets much worse when her past, that she’s tried so hard to bury, rises up to engulf her in its golden grip once again. Lisa is ripped from the existence that she so pain stakingly built for herself into a mixed up world of intrigue, where nothing is as it seems. It’s a fight to survive and to protect what she is sworn to, but will love conquer all? Will she betray her oath to be happy? Does she even have a choice anymore or does a several thousand year old mystery hold enough weight in treasure to drag her down with it? Everyone wants her dead, everyone that is but for one man who is the cause of all her upheaval in the first place. He’s an agent working for someone, but she doesn’t know who. She only hopes he’s as good as his kisses make her believe him to be.

Read my books and you'll learn everything there is to know about me in a way that only several hundred thousand words can do, but in a nutshell I'm imaginative and I love to write and at some point in my busy life I have apparently had a lot of time to do just that.

When this author contacted me, I was intrigued when he mentioned that he features a strong Christian standpoint in his books and there would be no explicit sex scenes or foul language. I was curious to see if he would deliver. I am happy to say that he does--there is some mature content but nothing that is explicit.

Lisa Tauranto is a detective who starts working a case that ends up being very personal for her. She becomes involved with a man she knows as Flint and they are attracted to each other. She's not quite sure if she can trust him, though. As the story progresses, we learn more about Lisa's past and the secret she must go to great lengths to keep hidden.

I liked this story from the beginning. Towards the middle, as we started to learn more about Lisa, I got to the point where I didn't want to put it down. There were plenty of twists and turns and I wasn't sure who to trust and what the motives of some people were. Including Flint. I liked him and wanted him to be good but wasn't sure. I enjoyed their banter and relationship which is why I was hopeful it would all work out in the end.

The ending is satisfying but I feel like there's still much to learn about Flint. There are currently six books in this series and I'm not sure if Flint is in more of them but I hope he is. I look forward to reading more so I can find out!

I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.

Having just finished writing a brief explanation of why I abandoned another action-adventure read, I thought I might as well attach a similar note to this one. In this case, I was initially drawn to the book because it was written by a Christian author, and presented a female character in a strong role, both of which are positive features for me. (I also appreciated the fact that this one didn't present any problem of bad language or lewd content.) But without engaging in any spoilers, I thought the plotting was too far-fetched to allow suspension of disbelief, and some of the crucial details were ludicrously impossible (such as the kind of detailed, multi-tonal drawing a homeless derelict was supposed to have done inside a jail cell with a single piece of chalk). It was intended as a serious book, but I simply wasn't able to take it seriously. :-(

Agent with a History (The Agents for Good) by Stanton III, Guy

“Agent With A History” by Guy Stanton III, was my first crime drama/thriller/suspense novel and I loved it! I was immediately pulled into the middle of the action from the very first page. A gruesome murder is committed, and exotic and stunning NYPD detective, Lisa Tauranto, is put on the case to find out who and why. Lisa is a no nonsense, hard nosed detective, who has a few skeletons in her closet that later come up for air. Through her quest to solve the case, Lisa is led to a mysterious and attractive man that goes by the name of “Flint”. He becomes her protector when her life is in danger and she has no choice but to trust him. But who is Flint and why does he seem to know so much about her, the murder, the people trying to kill her, her history and her knowledge of a hidden treasure? Is he really trying to keep her out of harm’s way, or is he the killer and is just out to get the fortune? We are left guessing as to who is behind all this but know that they will stop at nothing to get what they want. “Agent With A History” is full of intrigue, a touch of romance and Guy keeps the story moving forward with spy tingling action. I highly recommend this book and cannot wait to read the others in the “Agent” series.

Agent with a History was a pretty easy book to read. However, I will admit that in some parts it just felt like a hot mess. For some odd reason, I was thinking this book was going to go one way before I even dove into it. Then, after a couple of chapters, I realized that I was completely wrong. Which, yes, I'm still annoyed with because I'm so confused.

Other than that, the characters were okay. I wasn't completely invested in them but stuck around to see what was actually going to happen next. Another thing that kind of annoyed me was how easy it was for someone to forgive the other. Like what the actual hell? I need some groveling people.

In the end, it was interesting to read but I don't think I will dive into the next book.

I was given a copy of "Agent With a History" by the author, Guy Stanton III in exchange for an honest review. This book was an action packed ride. The main character is a strong woman who has been through some hard stuff. The story is a James Bond/Indiana Jones from a Christian viewpoint. There is still plenty of violence, romance and good spy stuff, but all free of vulgar language and explicit sex scenes. I give the book 4 stars and will read the rest of the series. My only negative is most of the story is told in the first person and when we need an outside view from someone other than the main character, the switch can be confusing. Just means you have to pay attention a little more. Adult content (though not explicit).

Wow, this was a treat. This is usually not the kind of books I read, but as I liked other stuff by this author I decided to give it a try. I could hardly put it down at night. I got totally into the book and everything around me disappeared. I really liked the reference to the Louis L'amour books.
If I would try to describe the book in one sentence it would be: A cross between Ed McBain and Indiana Jones, but better.

When Agent with a History began, I thought it was going to be a police drama. Why? Because the central character Lisa is an NYPD detective and is called onto a strange case. The premise had me immediately intrigued. A local strip club was recreated at the scene of an empty lot with sinister looking folks creeping around the site.

But from that moment, the book took too many unnecessary twists and turns, and so much of it seemed implausible.

I will suspend disbelief when reading a book. I read paranormal, fantasy and science fiction, but some things are so far out there, they lose believability in the world created – and that was the problem with Agent with a History.

A bit of backstory on Lisa. She’s a tough-as-nails cop who won’t let anyone get in her way of solving a case. She was sexually abused in her teens and will not let people into her life easily. …

(SPOILER ALERTS AHEAD!)

Except the man, Flint, who breaks into her apartment and disarms her.

That gave me my first pause.

She then decided to turn her back on the police and go off with a man she doesn’t know, but immediately trusts and falls in love with roughly an hour into being in his presence. Lisa goes against what I felt were her morals and breaks the law as she and Flint embark on an Indiana Jones-esque journey as they chase a treasure of an ancient civilization.

It became a bit too much, especially how easily Lisa forgave Flint for his lies and manipulation. Remember, this woman was abused and escaped a horrible home life based on lies and manipulation, but for this guy that was OK.

The book also jumped between first- and third-person and added to the confusion.

What a hot mess! This story seemed to be a compilation of every single fantasy/thought the author ever had. There is detective work, spies, shooting, magic and even Nazis. I don't even know where to begin. The writing was pretty awful, often times hard to follow and the dialogue was cringe-worthy. At one point the hero of the story calls the woman a "sexy little fish". What? If a man called me that I would swim away as quickly as my sexy little fins would allow me. And don't even get me started on the exclamation points! So many exclamation points! On pretty much every other line!!! Was it supposed to make the story more exciting? I can't tell!

For being labelled Christian fiction it didn't have a lot of Christian elements in it. Yes, there was a lengthy religious rant in the middle of the novel from an unlikely character and then it sort of tried to tie it back in at the end but it didn't really further the story or the characters at all.

The main character, Lisa, goes from being a mean, lean, fighting machine to a wimpy girl in need of rescue as soon as Flint shows up. Her anxiety, nightmares and fear are never brought up again and she transforms into a totally different person. Let's not even talk about how she falls in love within less than an hour of meeting the guy.
Flint's character is also poorly developed and his background is never explained. Who is Flint? You will never find out.
Come to think of it, the incident that starts off this book never even gets resolved! Why was the replica of the stripper club made? What was the point of that? And why was Flint there, seeming to be a part of the whole thing. So many loose ends and unanswered questions...
The story was all over the place and highly unrealistic. However, despite all of this is was a quick, fun, often times (unintentionally) laugh out loud read that I got through in a couple of hours. A nice attempt but needs to be thoroughly edited and thought through. Also, despite it's supposed Christian message, a lot of emphasis is put on money and material wealth. And ancient magic. What is that all about!!!

"Agent with a History" is a compelling, fast-paced novel combining the best of various genres including mystery, action/adventure, and a bit of folklore and history. Flint is focused on saving certain groups of people by destroying a treasure that would give some organizations the wealth they need to carry out those plans while at the same time saving the woman he's fallen in love with. Guy Stanton does a great job of developing the plot and basing it on Biblical history. The only part of the character development that left me in the dark was that Mr. Stanton never mentions a specific reason why Flint has taken on this type of mission or any background information about what appears to be a loosely bound organization of fellow agents. Without this information, I can't stop thinking about these men and women as just another group of vigilantes who create their own moral values and play God by deciding who lives and dies based on their own ideas of justice.

Once I picked up the book I had a hard time putting it down. The way it was written was like being pulled right along with the characters. The facts of the Bible being woven in throughout the book shows just how much influence the Bible can have without people realizing it.

Agent with a History was the first book I've read from cover to cover by Guy S Stanton III and it certainly won't be my last! I've seen this book around before, but the blurb always put me off thanks to the description of the man/victim's death. However, after reading the reviews and knowing that the author was a Christian, I decided to try the "look inside" feature, and the story hooked me and (pretty much) never let go. Lisa's story was one serious rollercoaster of discoveries (either for her or for the reader), non-stop action, includes a mystery surrounding a secret treasure that leads them on a quest that reminds me of those from Indiana Jones, and features the intriguing Flint. I liked that the gruesome violence is more focused in the first chapters, and the mentions of sexual assault are just that, mentioned and never graphic. (This is not a spoiler since it's all written in the trigger warning at the beginning of the book). I agree with the reviewers that mentioned Lisa and Flint's romantic story was one of love at first sight, so if that's not your cup, you may not like this one, but for me, it wasn't much of an issue. What did become an issue was . I also agree with the reviewer that asked for more background on Flint's past, since it's totally true we didn't get to know as much from him as we did from Lisa. However, knowing this is a series, I hope we get to, of not know, at least see him and Lisa again down the road. I'll totally be reading the next book since it's Tyre's story! ~ 3.5 stars

Content:
Sex: yes between the MCs, but only after they're married and it's pretty closed-door. Some passionate kisses, a bit of innuendo (mention of spanking as punishment for breaking an SD card), and one scene with her in a bikini (though nothing inappropriate happens). Also, there's mention of the FMC and her mother being raped when she was young.
Violence: gruesome death of two men by being sliced or something like that, another is hanged, and other deaths occur throughout the book but mostly in self-defense (use of guns, poison)
Language: none that I can remember, so it is possible to write a story without cursing, even when it's full of action and there are some shady characters.
Biblical: interesting connection of the treasure with the Queen of Sheba.

Stanton starts the book with the introduction to a crime scene that is almost an exact replica of the precinct where the female protagonist works as a homicide detective. Framed as a crime thriller, the book takes off direct into the web of mystery that I find oh-so-familiar to the plethora of shows and books out there. There is a large difference, however, with Stanton intentionally seeking to create a Christian worldview in each book, abstaining from explicit sex scenes and foul language. In this regard, I give him kudos - it is a challenge to write and avoid inappropriate content and maintain success. His book is highly regarded by reviewers with consistent four and five star ratings. Why, then, did I give it three stars?

I have been reviewing books for quite some time, and have several hundred professional reviews completed. As a result, I have honed myself to focus on the craft of the writer more so than the entertainment of the content. Sure, there are some books that capture my attention and compel me to read to the end. This book, however, is not one of them. As I said, I appreciate Stanton's hard work - writing is a challenge, and being a novelist is impressive.

However, looking at this introduction to his action/adventure series, I find that Stanton struggles with the fluidity of his prose and grammatical structures. He has potential, of which I am sure reveals itself deeper into the text and in his other titles, but this book could use an editorial review. Stanton consistently writes sentences that cause me to re-read the material out of getting caught up in the structure more than the story. The grammatical makeup of his text leaves me struggling to go from start to finish in the text, with several instances of internal thought of the character at hand that did not seem like a thought, but rather a narrator's comment, or run-on sentences and the like.

If you're looking for a clean thrill, then this job is most likely an excellent choice. If the sex scenes and foul language that typically finds itself in this genre does not bother you, then I would defer to titles by James Patterson, Richard Castle, and the like. Stanton does an excellent job at getting his work out in the wild - it just needs a bit more editorial work to boost the quality of the content.

Disclosure: I was contracted to write an honest review in exchange for a reviewer copy of the product. The opinions stated in this review are solely my own.

This book starts off with Lisa (our main female) walking into an exact replica of the police precinct where she works. A man has been tortured before being murdered and this is where the lead takes her.

There is a lot of action in this book and you are quickly swept away with it all. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't swept away enough to ignore the questions that weren't answered or the contradictions given.

Then, at around the 50% mark of the book, I felt like I was suddenly sat in church reading the bible. This book turned from being an action/adventure story into a sermon. If I wanted to be preached to I would visit a church of my choosing at my time. The rest of the story is peppered with tales from the bible, biblical references and mentions of faith.

If you are looking for a Christian action and adventure book where they won't have sex until after she has a ring on her finger then you will probably enjoy this book.

Agent with a History

It’s been one long day for Lisa and her headache is living proof of it. Most of it she blamed on the full moon outside. Things always got crazy this time of the month, but this month was exceptional. She needed sleep bad and only hoped the nightmares that haunted her would leave her alone for at least one night. They don’t. She wakes up as usual screaming only to find out that her nightmare has just begun, because she’s not alone in her room.

Agent with a History was interesting and fast-paced. It was a quick read, and kept me on the edge of my seat.

Characters

The characters were well done. They had believable back stories that motivated their actions. The protagonists were lovable, yet still flawed, and the antagonists were purely evil, but I still pitied them.

Plot

The plot was mildly predictable, but I was still interested in seeing the story play out. It was a wonderful idea, but there were several plot points from the beginning that were never resolved. They were just there to get the character from point A to point B. I thought they could have been tied into the rest of the story better, or just left out. Other than that, I liked it.

Overall thoughts

There were some really neat and original elements to the book, such as 'The Queen's Dance' that Solomon composed for the Queen of Sheba. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, especially the elements of history woven through it.

Would I recommend it? Yes, to ages 15+
Would I let my kids read it? Yes, but there is some mildly mature material that I don't think young children should read
Would I read the other books in the series? Yes, I'm excited to find out more about the characters!

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Explosions, fabulous wealth, psychopathic killers, exotic locations, murder, betrayal, and romance, all make Agent With A History one heck of a wild ride.

Non-stop action and adventure that will keep both men and women glued to their e-readers. Guy Stanton III has penned a story that both genders can read and enjoy.
I started expecting to work on it over the weekend, I wound up finishing it in one day.

In many ways I was reminded of Indiana Jones but with an element of faith added into the adventure. I think one of the better aspects of the story is that it not only reads much like an adventure movie but it also conjured up that reader's mental movie-screen.

Page-turning, thrill-a-minute reading without all of the garbage usually slipped into the genre. If you love those over-the-top adventure films, you know the ones, chases, agents and guys you don't know what side they are on, terrorists, bombs in cases, secrets taken the grave, beautiful women and handsome-but-dangerous men, well Agent With A History just might be the story for you.
One thing I will note is that there is some adult content, not explicit, but I probably wouldn't suggest it for kids.

Action-packed adventure is waiting for you on the digital page . . .

I read The Agents for Good series in less than a week as well. I enjoyed them very much. The mystery/science fiction/crazy suits my style. There were a few confusing parts but nothing I couldn't work through. I enjoyed the characters in all their imperfect glory. They all have issues in their past that they have to deal with to get on with their lives.

There were two downsides to the books. I found quite a few words in each book that were improperly used. For example: "there" instead of "they're". But to me it doesn't matter because I understood. The other downside is the details. A double edged sword. I couldn't recommend these books to just anyone. The details in which the unmarried characters desire each other physically went farther in the description than many Christian books and is not for everyone. I wouldn't give these books to my family to read. But on the other hand lust is something that is prevalent in this world and the characters deal with it as best as they can with God's help.

I will be reading these again. I enjoyed the Warrior series more but these were good too.

Lisa Tauranto is New York Police Detective that may or may not hold the key to a legendary treasure. She is investigating case of apparent suicides but the evidence lean this way. Mystery man named Flint only wants to protect Lisa from harm and maybe himself. When Lisa is given a leave of absence, she struggles to understand why all of this is happening to her. Lisa finds herself on dangerous path she reaches out to Flint for help. Flint asks for her trust and she readily gives it. Lisa discovers that she enjoys being comforted by Flint. Flint shows Lisa the benefit of finding a Godly man who wants what is best for her now and in the future too. Where is this legendary treasure? Will Lisa accept her own faith in God? Will Lisa ever learn Flint's real name? Your answers await you in Agent with a History.

This is the second novel by Mr.Stanton III, that I've read and thoroughly enjoyed. I even enjoyed faith in God aspect as well because it wasn't too preachy nor shoved down my throat either. I appreciate Mr. Stanton III, writing style for it's ease of reading. Both the story and characters are compelling, raw, honest, and down to earth. I look forward to more work by this author.

This book is really enjoyable. It has NYPD, ritualistic killings, mafia, and an Indiana Jones-esque treasure trail seeking Biblical gold.

Cop Lisa has to investigate an unusual murder, where it is clear the perpetrator has access to much money in order to pull it off in the fashion he has. As she delves deeper into the investigation, it is clear that she cannot get free of her past which has finally caught up with her.

This book wasn't predictable (or at least the main bits of the plot weren't. All books are somewhat predictable), and took many twists and turns as Lisa moved through the investigation. Being a Christian I liked the references to the Old Testament, even though this is clearly fiction. It is fast-paced, and keeps you on your toes. There is also a romance with the mystery man who helps her.

I'd recommend this book, and have added the next in the series to my wishlist.

Enjoyable, different read. Story was very engaging and entertaining, pulling from true events and mixing fiction is always fun. I expected a lot more from Lisa since she was a detective, which is not an easy profession in some areas for a woman not matter what her race, but she seemed to let things go and not deeply inquire about what Flint/James was up to. Made me wonder was she truly a detective or just doing it to spite her father. Wanted a bit more romance, but enjoyed the action, mystery and adventure. I hope to see more about Marshawn. The loose ends tied up a little too neatly but don't detract from the overall story.

Wow! Non-stop action in a Christian series. This book provided me with quite the rollercoaster ride of emotions and wow factor all the way to the very end! This book would certainly make a great action movie! To say I loved it would be an understatement! A top cop meets Flint- I have to give you his name because to describe him is well, next to impossible- kind of a Christian James Bond. He spends his time protecting her and loving her- though I think he love her before they even met...You'll have to read the book to find out why!

It's hard for me to review this book. I enjoyed the plot/premise of the story, as long as I could follow it. At times, it felt as if too much was going on. A good cop ends up working with the bad guys, comes from a criminal psycho family. The narrative went from 1st person to 3rd person and back. It was a little confusing. Things seemed rushed at some points. It's a good story. Mystery, romance, action. But it just didn't feel right, and I wasn't entranced by it.

I love the story but the form was a little confusing. I had a hard time keeping track of who was narrating since it would go from first person to third. Even though that was a little hard to keep up with the story was captivating. It was a story with twists and turns and fast paced. Would love to read more from this author and more in this series.

However, the book picked up in pace and I think with the reading.I thought some parts a little bit pushing the envelope for a Christian label.I like Guy's imagination. It reminded me of Ted Dekker's A Man Called Blessed.

I really, really wanted to like this book but after several attempts to just get through it, I gave up. The author seems conflicted in which genre he wants in this story. Fantasy, thriller, crime, romance? They all can't be involved at the same time. It gave me a headache, after so many abrupt plot twists. I did like the two protagonists, though.

3.5 Stars... Interesting story that appears disjointed to me.... I liked Lisa at the beginning but she was a different and not as good character at the end. Other reviews have got it right when there was no conclusion to the opening murders or that Lisa just left her ‘friends’ on the police force. It will be interesting to see where book 2 goes...
