Once again, it's up to Dirty Harriet to makegood in a town gone bad.
Miriam was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The first of many changes in her life occurred at age six, when she witnessed tanks rolling past her family’s home during the Soviet occupation of the country. Shortly thereafter, her family fled to the United States, taking her with them. She grew up in Denver, where she spent her high school and early college years studying diligently to become a particle physicist. However, during a brief stint at Los Alamos National Lab, she began to suspect that building nuclear weapons just might not be the best way to spend her life. Thus, at age twenty she rebelled and spent the next decade living on the fringes of the Harley biker world.
In her thirties she returned to semi-conventional life, earning a Ph.D. in social work and becoming a university professor, publishing academic treatises under her real name of Miriam Potocky. She has found this to be a rewarding career, with the minor exception that one fine day she crashed headfirst into the glass ceiling of the ivory tower. Falling into a funk, she took to her bed to eat chocolates and watch old Dirty Harry movies. She didn’t get Harry’s appeal until she suddenly had a vision of him as a woman, and then it all made sense. Thus her debut novel, DIRTY HARRIET, was born. It won the 2006 Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award for Best First Series Romance. Miriam can only guess that this is because the heroine kills her husband on page one.
DIRTY HARRIET and its sequel, DIRTY HARRIET RIDES AGAIN, were originally published by Harlequin and were reissued by Bell Bridge Books in 2013. The third in the series, DEAD IN BOCA, was published by Bell Bridge in 2014.
Miriam lives in South Florida with her husband and their multicultural canines, a Welsh Corgi and a Brussels Griffon. She continues to profess by day and decompress by night by writing her next Dirty Harriet novel.
I'm a fan of this series. I'm afraid this review will read too much like my review of book one, as I loved that one too. I don't have anything new to add. Book two is a different mystery with a whole new set of laughs featuring the most delightful heroine ever.
I think I may actually pray for a change...that there's a book three. Any gods listening? LOL
In book one we met Harriet, a former "Boca Babe" who offed her own coke-snorting, abusive husband at a wedding with a .44. She's left the frivolous "desperate housewife" lifestyle and is now a bike-riding, leather-clad, private eye who takes no grief from anyone.
The mystery this time is...religious leaders are dropping dead left and right. Is it because of their beliefs? Does someone have a beef with god? Does it go back to gay rights? Harriet is hired to find out. There are attempts on her life, hate gangs, snakes, and more.
I laughed out loud many times and though I had my suspicions, didn't know whodunit till Harriet told us. The narrative is sarcastic, witty, and even the conversations with the alligator made me smile. This is not a romance, but I don't mind that. I like that Harriet is a woman who doesn't need a man in her life to feel complete. I would actually like to see this odd "thing" with Lior kicked aside completely.
I have chosen some of my favorite passages to share.
The pastor went on, "I am here as the leader of the Christian Righteous Against Perverts."
Christian Righteous Against Perverts. I needed an easy way to remember that. Acronyms were always good mnemonic aids. So this one was...CRAP.
Finally finished even though I had to break every now and then. Still a great read! I can't wait until the next one comes out!!! Dirty Harriet Rides Again was beautifully short but positively elegant in its delivery! Thank-you Miriam!
I enjoyed this book. The main reason is because I like Harriet, she is a tough no nonsense girl but isn't afraid to pull out the lipstick when the occasion a raises. She is also slightly mad, as she has a crocodile as a side kick. It is a bit one-sided but is good for a few laughs and puzzling over some clues aloud. The mystery was good and with so many bodies there was a nice amount of reason for the deaths and the suspects, this meant the killer was obvious straight away, I did have my suspicions. Can't wait to start the next book. Former Boca Babe Harriet is attending a gay wedding, her two best friends are getting married but when the minister is killed before the ceremony can take place and one of the guests is arrested she must ditch the dress and turn into Dirty Harry by donning on her motorcycle jacket and launching an investigation. Was the murder a hate crime? against gays or the unorthodox church? A rich friend Contessa Von Phul hates to see injustices and hires Harriet to investigate. While Harriet is tracking down clues a rabbi is killed and the police are quick to make another arrest. Were the two deaths connected? Harriet zeros in on the only connection the two had in common, which leads here two three possibilities. Can she narrow the suspect pool down before anyone is killed? It's going to be a trail by fire and ice for this gutsy biker babe. I like the narrator she sounds just like I imagine a babe coming from Florida sounds like, laid back.
I like this series. Harriet is solving her second murder case after she finds a dead body at a wedding. The Everglades and boca raton ate the settings. A diverse cast of characters complete this great story.
Book two is another mystery with another set of laughs. Again a quick, fun read. Perfect for those times when you don't want to get really invested in a book.
This series is fun and entertaining. After finishing the first book I was looking forward to seeing what Dirty Harriet and her increasing cast of cast of characters got themselves into next.
