When a mysterious incident causes Mir to lose her magical abilities, she decides to retire and enrolls in a normal school, but soon discovers that the school has special connections to her family.
Gorgeous art, but the story at first appeared to be standard magical girl/high school stuff with some uglier than usual gender undertones; it gets a bit more interesting towards the end.
Mir leaves her magical realm for a normal high school in Seoul, which naturally turns out not to be quite so normal. The school is led by the female Wonhwa, who have the real power, and their male competitors, the Hwarang. Ba-Ri, the head of the Wonhwa, mistakes an encounter between Mir and Ba-Ri's crush and challenges Mir to a duel; the Hwarang, eager to cause Ba-Ri to lose status, escalate matters further. Mir, who only wanted to make friends, finds herself with a school full of enemies.
So far, so standard. But Mir left her realm because she lost her powers years ago, in an encounter with a boy she can't quite remember, but which seems to be related to an ancient tree on the school grounds, and the arrogant, bullying Ba-Ri turns out to be under some mysterious obligation to the school principal, a mysterious, powerful, and vindictive woman. Mir's family also has ties to the school, as she discovers during a guided tour, and some of the relationships set up--between Mir and Ba-Ri, between Ba-Ri and her crush--are more complex than they initially appear.
A lot of this is still rote, and like Kara's Angel Diary suffers from the introduction of a cast of thousands in the first volume; but there's just enough extra there that I may pick up Volume 2.
The artwork is breathtaking, however the story had a lot going on in this first volume and it seems like it was a little bit all over the place. It was a bit much to take in.
This was my first ever manga and I got on with it ok. Once I figured out that the publisher had printed it like an English comic book and not the traditional Japanese way - that made for an interesting few minutes! I think I'll be picking up more manga in the future.
Good art makes it easy to follow the action. There're occasional moments of humor, but it's mostly a serious story about a school with some very weird customs!
