pretty awesome on what happens in this book. I am really beginning to see that my pairing isn't going to happen, but that's okay. I am really seeing that Mitsuru cares for Mahiru, even love her.
Full review for later.* Read: Monday December 9th,2024
Mahiru Shirashi is definitely one of the most useless main characters I've seen in a while. I have become disinterested in this character. She is adorable in her chibi style but that is it. There is nothing interesting about her other than her being a reincarnation of an ancient princess. Other than being a descendant of an ancient princess/reincarnation she is simply existing in the story. At least Takemichi from Tokyo Revengers was useful, had a likable personality and actual character development despite being weak in battle. This girl doesn't impact the story AND she can't fight. I don't see what her purpose is other than being a possible love interest for Mitsuru and being there for the perspective of an ordinary person amongst the supernatural for the readers. There are too many tropes dropped in this story without any proper explanation for characters actions or any depth for the characters past the tropes they are given. Crescent Moon is an example for a writer who relied too much on the tropes of the late 1990s and early 2000s series for gothic and "scene kids" instead putting more effort on character and story development. The random sexual insinuations and partial nudity this volume was misplaced. Hopefully the next volume has a decent ending.
There's so much drama and intrigue in the palace. That was an exciting volume! I really can feel the lacking interiority from Misoka, though. Boy's going through so much and I still don't feel like I know him as well as I want to. He is a pretty quiet character but... still! It's conflicting hmmm
Either way it was quite an exciting penultimate volume and I'm sad the series ends with 6! I feel like this story could really be fleshed out into a lot more volumes with much more introspection and characterization... sad it had to end so soon!
No spoilers here! Young Mahiru has chosen to help The Lunar Race, and maybe to bring peace between the Lunar Race and humans. Now she has been called to the Moon Palace to save the dying Moon Empress! There is so much that happens in this volume, and it's all one big spoiler! If you have liked this series so far, READ ON! If you've hung in there, and you're not sure, READ ON! Great manga series.
After talking to her aunt, Mahiru realizes what she truly wants. But when she returns to the Lunar Race, she's invited all the way to the Moon Palace, where she can see firsthand the troubles everyone expects her to be able to solve.
This volume features the first bit of real magic Mahiru has seen, in the portal that takes her from a simple room on Earth all the way to the Moon Palace. I liked the aesthetic of the new area, although I could wish it was more fantasy and less historical. The Lunar race lives in a very traditional Japanese-styled town, and its people wear long, decorative kimono. Even the residents appear mostly human, at least where Mahiru can see them.
Here, though, she's confronted with two uncomfortable facts. First, that the Lunar race in general has little in common with the few members she's gotten to know well. Most of them see her as a threat, or a tool to be used, and want to make sure her powers are very firmly under control. The second is that the Empress's illness---which her collecting the Lunar Tears was supposed to fix---may be too far along for any kind of help at all. And that leaves her son, a boy far too young to make any good decisions on his own, as the one who is technically in charge.
Overall this is a good next chapter for the story. I rate this book Recommended.
Mahiru is ordered to be escorted to the Moon Palace in hopes of utilizing her powers to heal the Empress, or at least so that the people of the moon may study her powers and find a way to utilize them, considering that time is running short and Oboro has taken too long to collect the Teardrops of the Moon. When Mahiru, Mitsuru, and Misoka arrive at the moon palace, however, Mahiru is whisked away to meet with the Emperor and then to the Empress in hopes of using her powers to heal her. But in order to help the Empress, Mahiru must first confront the pain and suffering that she had endured all throughout her life to truly understand the Empress... but by the time that is made possible, will it already be too late? And when Hokuto dissolves his and Keiko's engagement, will a new love blossom between her and a member of the Moonlight Bandits...?
Ahh, I do love this sort of fantasy story. I am tempted to give this volume five stars, but I reserve that rating for something that is delicious, but that also drastically moves me, which this didn't. Mahiru and Mitsuru have got to be my OTP. When I first started the series I wanted her and Nozomu to end up together, but oh, this couple is just too delicious! I think that this may be the first time that I chose a different monster over a vampire. Oh? I AM MATURING! I am no longer blinded by the addicting vampiric ways! Aha, ahem, but as I way saying, I do love a fantasy of this genre. Romance, action, mystery, heartache, ahh! But it is the way that it is compiled, my dear. The way that it flows, and the selection of its characters makes it all for me. This volume, and somewhat the ones leading up to it, were beautifully done.
In this fifth volume of Crescent Moon, Mahiru Shiraishi, descendant of the Minister of the Left's Princess, is still trying to understand her heritage, her ability to awaken and draw out the hidden powers of the Lunar race. Mahiru is taken to the Moon palace, but when the Moon Emporer dies, Mahiru feels guilty for not being able overcome her own pain and suffering in order to save the Empress. I really like this Manga Fantasy series by Haruko Iida, looking forward to reading the next volume.
This volume wasn't bad. I'm happy the storyline has finally picked up... but still the similarities to Fruits Basket are so obviously and even slightly overbearing. Still, I want to see how it ends so I ended up ordering the last volume! I'm pretty sure I know what's going to happen, but I'm still excited to see how it ends.
