Fortunately, however, this was not by one of his fellow doctors but instead by an Australian medical journal - prompting much shock the next time he visited his friends down under! He has been a doctor with the NHS for over 60 years now, and has presided over the transition of medicine into the modern world. His career has seen both the sublime and the ridiculous; Stanley has worked with some of the greatest doctors in the world on pioneering new heart surgeries that have changed medicine forever - and he has been the guinea pig for experiments that have ended in temporary paralysis! Stanley's career is a microcosm of the developments of the medical system in the UK over the last 60 years - from the birth of the NHS onwards - and he has obtained many hilarious anecdotes along the way, all of which can be found in Confessions of a Doctor

This wasn't what I expected by something titled 'confessions of a doctor'. It read more like he just wanted to tell the world about all the places he visited and people he met, at times it didn't seem to flow naturally. He also complained several times about how research now has ethics and needs informed consent, sounding very much 'in my day we did this' like a facetious old man, while also giving good examples of exactly why this is necessary! It wasn't really very interesting.

Not as good as some of the other confessions books. Mostly about his life story.
