So I've been listening to audio books at the gym (while I'm on the weight machines). The library does not have the best selection of these to choose from, consequently I picked up "The Golden Compass" to listen to. I'll admit, I probably would not have read this book had it not been one of the few pre-loaded audio books available to me at our local library.
First off, when the book starts out, there is this SUPER cheesy music, that totally takes you back to elementary school and those lame audio effects in the educational movies we would watch. I just thought, "Oh no, I've made a bad choice here". But, once the terrible chimey music stops, the narration on this audio is really quite good! It's read by the author himself, with a cast. So when "Lyra" is talking, I hear "Lyra" talking. That was nice and I enjoyed that type of narration for this book.
I'm not on that is big on fantasy, or even "children's books" for that matter. I know if I enjoyed these genres then I would have loved this book. Even for not "loving it", it certainly has left me with many things to think about. I loved the whole concept of the daemons and their actions throughout the novel really add a whole new level to understanding the characters in this book. There are some definite ideas about science/research/tradition/doctrine and institutions of organized religion that appear in this book. I believe you can read this book and appreciate the story of it regardless of your own personal feelings as they relate to religion.
I wasn't sure if I was going to find book 2 and 3 in this series or not. After reading several other reviews and thinking on this a bit more, I believe I may pick up the rest of the books and read them. I love a book that makes me think and this one really does have some interesting underlying topics.
I know their supposed "agendas" are vastly different, but this book really is similar in style and genre to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. If you enjoyed those books, style wise, then you would enjoy this book as well.
This audio collection of the Golden Compass is really great. Sometimes books on cd are so boring (like the Earthsea Trilogy--don't do it!!), but these are all read by a variety of different actors, and the voices really bring the characters to life. Better than the movie, for sure!
