Summer vacation ends and school resumes. The stage is set for… very little to change amongst a group of incredibly idiosyncratic lesbians. And even if it did, you’ll be waiting a while to hear about it.
This is almost impossible to review without addressing the elephant that hops into the room at the end of the book - the series has gone on hiatus as of this volume and won’t be back for while.
All respect to the mangaka, who wants to do something different in the yuri space instead of this, although ironically there’s very little as ridiculous as School Zone Girls out there in the genre, but I’m not the one exhausted from making it.
Consequently, we basically evaporate from the scene in media res, without a whiff of closure for absolutely anything. And there’s some real dangling meat left on these storylines.
It’s not quite as madcap as before, although parts of it are great. A whole chapter that sort of revolves around a golden crotch is unlike anything I’ve read lately, that’s for sure. And watching Rei and Kei’s classmates get wholly into and then wholly fed up with shipping them in the span of a few pages is great too.
And, while not as brilliant as the reveal of Tsubaki’s backstory last volume, there is a revelation here about Fuji’s relationship with her college senpai at the arcade that was done so perfectly and would have made (or, less pessimistically, will eventually make) for some serious drama/nonsense in the future. Something about the public morals head practicing her one-liners struck me as really funny too.
It’s all pretty good, but not great. The jokes are solid, but not as strong as I want or have gotten, and same goes for the drama. The Kei and Rei situation gets even more complicated, but it’s just lingering on that precipice for who knows how long.
It would make for a very okay middle book, and it does, but it is definitely transitional and that transition is going to be a long way off. I had to laugh through the tears when we finally, finally get character profiles to keep track of everybody just as the manga stops.
3 stars - parts of it briefly achieve 3.5, but it’s consistently fine rather than good and my thoughts were most certainly tempered by the lack of more coming in the foreseeable future.
A great, if suspiciously short volume. Then I hit the end and realize we've entered HIATUS 💀
Absolute shame, but I hope the author gets what they need and comes back! I love the focus on Yatsude here but I kissed everyone else and was terribly disappointed that there's nothing resembling a resolution for anyone coming any time soon. Still a great read though.
