Time Raker: Mission1//Invasion

Rate this book
A young Dr Who? A junior James Bond? Or just an ordinary scared kid who still can’t swing a battle-axe or fire a white-hot plasma pulse rifle. 14-year-old Tom Raker has already mucked up his first training leap to Ancient Egypt. Now his dad has gone missing in the year 793 AD and Tom is the only person who can save him.

Tom was wearing the standard issue digital-fibre ThredNet cloaking device. It shimmered and flickered into life and he was left standing in authentic Viking furs holding his laser-replicated broadsword. ‘Historical Ops to Raker Two,’ crackled his internal comms unit. ‘The suspect is with a seven foot Viking warlord…proceed with caution.’ Tom’s stomach lurched.

Time Raker is a high tech historical adventure about a boy coming to terms with his unique ability to time travel as he searches for his father. Find out what it’s like to meet the past’s most famous rulers and leaders…and save the world from the usual deadly time-runners.

Born in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex just a short train ride east of London, Pete moved down to Devon in 2005.

Having spent a few years in Australia, he decided that South West England would be a good place to bring up his young family. Although he doesn't exactly surf to the office, the nearby beaches provide the occasional body boarding fix.

I received a copy of Time Raker: Mission 1/Invasion for review. I work in a middle school library, and my gauge for reviewing a book is based on whether or not I think the kids will like it. I will give my copy to my school's library, and I would buy more in the series as they are released. I also let a couple of kids read it, and the feedback was positive. They said it would work for 5th, 6th,and some 7th graders but probably not much older, and I agree with that. It might also be a good high/low book for older students. I think kids will like it because the plot offers something other than the dystopian romances that are pretty big right now, and the kids at my school love series books. So far there is a little list of students who want to read it before school is out for the summer. I'm just letting them borrow my copy, but hopefully several of them will get a chance to read it. It’s an excellent book, and kids will be into reading it and keeping up with the series.

I received 'Time Raker' in return for a review, and have just finished it after reading it to my nephew the last couple of nights before bed.
He, and I, for a matter of fact, thoroughly enjoyed the book!
Based around the adventures of Tom Raker as he attempts to find his father, this novel kept my nephew, who was likely in the target age range, on the edge of the bed as he puzzled over what would happen next.

When we'd finished he was already requesting to see whether there was another one, and was disappointed when I told him there wasn't one yet!

I think this is brilliant for younger children and even parents who would be reading to them. It keeps you interested until the very end, and I can't wait to see what happens in the next one!

Well written with a gripping story. Fast paced and indeed has a mix of a young Doctor Who but the adventure of an Indiana Jones. Swashbuckling for the times and I look forward to the next book.
