First published in 1921 the book is a product of it's time. Plenty of man-love towards Bolivar to the point the author gushed that Bolivar had been appointed by God to do what he had to do. The book provides an introduction into Bolivar and his life quickly covering his rise as a revolutionary, leader, general and liberator. I am sure there are better books out there but this was not a complete waste of time to read.
There HAS to be a better biography to assign for highschool than this. The author seems to have written this book simply to engage in hero-worship. I have no doubt that Bolivar was a great man, but when you present only one side of things and treat him more as if he is a God than a human, it's really off-putting.
Beyond the clear bias expressed throughout the book, we found it to be badly organized. It spent so much time on details of battles that it was often difficult to follow what was going on in the big picture or where and/or why the battles were even happening.
As soon as I began reading this biography by Guillermo Sherwell, I was enthralled with this man named Simón Bolívar. Not too long into the book, I started to ask myself, "Why wasn't I taught about this man growing up? Why?" There are many and obvious reasons for that, in my case. I feel as though I was cheated in my schooling. I thoroughly loved learning about Bolívar's life and with it, much more than I knew about Latin America's history. Bolívar was an uncommon man for his time, but he also was the right man. I dare even say the divinely appointed man.
A great introductory book about one of the world's greatest leaders. Right up there with Caesar and Alexander the Great, yet a man who travelled more than the latter, and led more men than the former, Bolivar was truly a life worth studying. With that said, don't expect to learn everything about this man from this book, as it just covers the highlights. For more detail a great deal more reading would be required, but this book is a great start. Keep in mind that studying the life of Simon Bolivar is a study in the life of Latin America, so the knowledge gained is incredible to say the least.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone studying South American history. On the positive side, it is comprehensive and does a very good job of covering a period of history and a man that not too many people are familiar with. On the negative side, the author is very impressed with Bolivar, and it shows. Take his words with a grain of salt!
While the book is generally well written and very informative, for me it tends to be on the dry side. It is a great source of information and I truly learned a lot about Bolivar, but it seems to be more a recitation of facts than anything.
I was unfamiliar with the particulars of the life of Bolivar. This is a good overview. At times, the political maneuverings were a little long on detail, but for the work of such an important figure the detail is necessary. Very interesting read and not too long.
