His mother abandoned him, his father died, and his cousin Toby has moved to another territory. To make matters worse, his evil uncle locked him up and threatened to torture him. After escaping, he only has one place to go--to his mate, a man that wants nothing to do with him. Mason Draegyn let the supernatural race down. Twenty-five years ago, a box that contained a hidden power was stolen from him. Unable to forgive himself and move on, he's pushed away the one person that could help him move forward--his mate. When Grant learns that Mason has denied him for over three years, the hurt and loneliness threatens to rip him apart. Used to people leaving him, he won't wait for Mason to push him away. This time he'll be the one leaving. Can these two work through their problems, or will they continue to push each other away? ** A Siren Erotic Romance

I don’t get why Mason keeps harping on that Grant should not have suppressed his pain. How much more blunt can you get than that it was a choice between being dead and being crippled?
I am starting to get the feeling that the “dominant” partners in these stories are not playing with a full deck. Attention span of a gnat.

Here’s something I see a lot. Someone believes they only get that one time with the other person and then they’ll be discarded – and the other person can see this clearly and maybe thinks to himself how they will stay and make it all better and never leave or something along those lines. But they never say so! They seem happy to allow person one to suffer more insecurity and often enough it results in number one leaving dejectedly. Just because number two apparently did not find it necessary to communicate or reassure.
You can’t just silently fuck the insecurity out of someone. (Contrary to popular belief sex by itself does nothing to prove love or caring.) You have words. Use them.
This annoys me so much that my interest in a story immediately drops several levels upon encountering it. Not only does it make the second character look stupid and too self-absorbed for basic interactions and courtesy, it’s also a very weak way to prolong tension for the first character. Nothing is gained. Except my disgust.

On the bright side, in this story the sex actually fulfils a purpose. At first anyway. By the end it bored me.

The fix at the ending seems to come a little too easily. But eh. Maybe Mason can stop being so annoyingly weak now.
That’s really been bothering me lately. Characters with weak minds who seek strength by lording over others.

One good thing came out of this. Jay. He is… fun and slightly sinister because he is just so very… nice. And smiley. Very promising.

Perhaps it is me? but there are several places that the book just doesn't seem to flow seamlessly. Not all of these are in the sex scenes. But again.. could just be me and eyes jumping just that little bit ahead to give that impression.

With all the mystery of this box and that being the reason Mason has stayed away from his mate.. I guess I expected a better answer or explanations behind it. Continue to be alluded to with no hard facts given. Then throw in a human Jay who apparently is more than he seems and getting the impression he may be Steele's mate...

Moving to the title, I didn't find there to be a lot of submissive play. The groundwork is there just unexplored for the most part. I'm more interested in what makes Jay tick at this juncture.

I made it all the way to 50% before giving up. Wizards and dragons just are not my thing, no matter how hard I try.
