Charlottesville, Virginia, private eye and falconer Frank Pavlicek is called by Cassidy Drummond, the daughter of a Congressman, to investigate the disappearance of her twin sister, Cartwright. Their father is known for his philandering--and Cassidy wonders if this led to Cartwright's disappearance. Despite a long list of suspects, Frank's not sure foul play is involved, putting him on a trail of family secrets and scandals.
The first hint of Andy Straka's future as a mystery writer came at the age of four when he appeared at his small-town neighbor's back door carrying a butcher's knife. Thankfully, the neighbor called Andy's mother instead of social services.
Andy is a former college basketball player, a licensed falconer, and longtime husband and father. His novels include the recently released SPLIT CITY, the first in a new amateur sleuth mystery series; the #1 bestselling private eye novel A WITNESS ABOVE and the six book, Shamus Award-winning Frank Pavlicek series; the techno-thriller trilogy DRAGONFLIES; and the critically-acclaimed suspense thrillers RECORD OF WRONGS and THE BLUE HALLELUJAH. Featured by Publishers Weekly among a group of "rising stars" in crime fiction, Andy is a past finalist for the Agatha Award and the Anthony Award.

Ex-cop turned Private Investigator Frank Pavlicek is the hero in the story. Frank receives a newspaper article through the mail, is is about a 20 years old picture, it's about a hit-and-run, and it turns out later it was sent by Cassidy Drummond, who wants to hire Frank to find her sister Cartwright or (Wright) as she is known. Cassidy and Cartwright are no ordinary sisters, they are the twin daughters of Congressman Drummond. It appears there are hidden family secrets that are about to be blown to the surface with the start of a scandal that rocked the roots of the Congressman's family. His dirty secret was out, he was having an affair and now it was public knowledge. The scandal ended with the divorce of the congressman and his wife Karen. This was just the beginning of the journey to find the truth!
Cassidy starts by explaining to Frank that she found the newspaper article in Wright's room, it seems that after the affair went public Wright had started delving into her father's murky background, and at the same time decides to end her relationship with her no-good boyfriend. This is exactly when she vanished. Was her boyfriend responsible for her disappearance?? could her father be responsible? Or is there some other more sinister goings on?
As Frank tries to unearth the reason for the twin's disappearance, he himself becomes a "prime suspect" of the FBI's investigations, mainly because he refuses to tell them the whereabouts of the Cassidy and her mother Karen, he has hidden away for their own safety.
There are more twists in this story than a corkscrew, more turns, than a turntable, and more suspense than most can handle. I am usually pretty good at guessing WHO DONE IT, but, this time it took me by total surprise, which really pleased me immensely.
Truly a great story, written exceptionally well, with enough bite in the story to grip you all the way through.

Brash Books claim to publish the best crime novels in existence, and I'm beginning to agree with them. Of the three novels I've read from them so far, two of them I've given a five star rating. A Killing Sky is five star material to me. The story is the second in a series that follows ex-cop now turned private investigator Frank Pavlicek. This time he's hired by the daughter of a Virginia Congressman to find her missing twin sister, as she went missing after saying she was going to drive over to her boyfriend's dorm and break up with him. With only a few leads to pursue, such as a seemingly unrelated hit-and-run that occurred 20 years ago, it's up to Frank to find the missing twin before it's too late.
Political scandals are far from uncommon, so it should be no surprise that Congressman Drummond himself has been caught up in a few. He's had a handful of affairs and even nearly raped a woman, although the public eye doesn't know that. So when one of his daughters go missing, all eyes point to him as the suspect. Did he get rid of her to hide something, or was it the workings of someone else?
It's nice to have things be switched up when I read crime novels - sometimes I'll read a legal thriller, a cop thriller, or, in this case, as told from a private investigator. A Killing Sky was a greatly told story. The seemingly unrelated events turned up related, all thanks to Frank's sleuthing to prove it. I was on the tip of my toes the whole time, reading along to see what the current scenario would lead to. I haven't read any of the other novels in the Frank Pavlicek series yet, but I can guarantee you that I will be soon. Straka writes with such a captivating style that it's difficult to stop reading.
A Killing Sky is an interesting thriller. The lead character - an ex-cop - is looking into the disappearance of a congressman's daughter. The congressman in question seems to have something to hide and the more tangled the story gets, the less likely the girl is going to be found. The twists were less predictable than most, and Straka doesn't tip the ending.
This was a good read, with great action, likeable characters and cool facts about falconry. However, the typos are everywhere. I also spotted three places where the wrong name is used for a character. What a shame to let these preventable mistakes mar this gripping story. Does it cost too much to pay just one reasonably intelligent human to proofread?

Ex-cop and avid falconer Frank Pavlicek is hired by the daughter of a philandering Virginia Congressman to find her missing twin sister. Is her disappearance related to her disintegrating relationship with her boyfriend? Or is it somehow connected to her ambitious father’s re-election campaign, a tawdry sex scandal, and a hit-and-run accident that happened twenty years ago? Pavlicek’s investigation unearths long-buried secrets that someone would like to keep six feet under…along with the PI’s corpse.
*2.5 stars*
A little while ago, I read 'A Witness Above', which I thought had some real promise of a novel but was badly let down with editing.
Sad to say, it hasn't improved. In fact, even the story (which dragged me through the last book) became a bit of a cookie-cutter plot. I was sadly disappointed.
The main problems with the story were two things: the plot was just not original, nor was it even a good variation of the "Politicians kids get kidnapped, hero must wade through the family secrets and lies to uncover the truth bore it's too late" storyline. And then, even Frank becomes a suspect...it's just all a bit tiring, really. Second, the editing issues were still there. Nothing was learned from a lot of reviews that called the mistakes out. Same poor grammar and punctuation, same wafer-thin secondary characters and, now, it feels like the falconry things is just a cheap gimmick to try and grab some attention in a genre that is so heavily loaded with real talent.
However, after all that, I still give it 3 stars cos I just keep thinking that there is a jackpot coming for the author at some point...

I very much like this mystery series despite the fact that it is not my usual genre. But Frank is an appealing character. He is smart but self-deprecating, confident yet not pushy. He is a former police homicide detective who now is a private investigator. He took on this case at the recommendation of his girlfriend Marcia. Cassidy Drummond is the daughter of a prominent Congressman whose career has recently been rocked by a sexual scandal. When Cassidy's twin sister goes missing, she asks for Frank's help. Turns out there's a lot more involved than what he expected. With the help of his friend Jake Toronto as well as his daughter Nicky, they work together to discover Cartwright's situation as well as some other secrets that have been hidden for years. The added bonus is that Frank's falconry adds interest, and I'm always fascinated to learn more about Frank's hawk Armistead and the hunting they do together.
Great characters.... Pavlicek, Toronto, and Armistead +
This was a fine-tuned mystery. Congratulations to Andy Straka for providing us with Frank Pavlicek and Jake Toronto. Toronto is to Pavlicek what Joe Pike is to Elvis Cole ("World's Greatest Detective"). If you love Robert Crais, you will understand. If you haven't read Crais, you're missing out. I love Pavlicek, and I'm starting his third book when I place this next period.
It was a good read. The main characters are really alive. There were so e words in the Book that I did not like to read, but I guess the author felt that was how some people talk. Lots of action and interesting with the falcon training. I will read the next one.
This is Andy Straka’s second Frank Pavlicek novel. I have really enjoyed the character Straka has created in Frank—smart, tenacious, very down to earth. He reminds me a little of my favorite character, (Craig Johnson’s) Walt Longmire. A Killing Sky unravels slowly, with twists and turns that kept me reading.
Mr. Steaks has created a terrific set of characters working inside a finely crafted story filled with interesting twists and turns. Looking forward to the next Pavlicek installment.
Interesting and solid. Characters I look forward to visiting again. There is an element of mystery because it is a continuing storyline where the people have intereracted and developed a community.
Free-Flowing Thriller with a Touch of Falconry, 27 Aug. 2015
I love this author’s books. Cassidy Drummond asks PI Frank Pavlicek to find her twin sister Cartwright. She disappeared on the same night that the twins returned from a trip to Japan. Frank at first thinks that Cassidy is actually playing a practical joke on him. Why would the daughter of Congressman Tor Drummond not go to her own father to report that her sister is missing? He changes his mind when she shows him an old newspaper cutting she found in Cartwright’s suitcase. Why would Cartwright be interested in a newspaper cutting relating to a car accident in which two people, George and Norma Paitley were killed? Could he have something to do with his own daughter’s abduction?
These are just some of the questions that he and his former ex-homicide partner, Jake Toronto need to find answers for, and quickly because the longer Cartwright is missing, the bigger the probability is that they may end up only discovering her body.
This is my second encounter with Frank Pavlicek and hopefully not my last. Andy Straka manages to tell a story full of intrigue and seemingly impossible dead ends. His words seem to flow like a stream running over cobbled stones. He has a very special talent for managing to tell quite a dark story in such an easy fashion. I also love the bits that he manages to include about falconry. They add a touch of nature to an otherwise urban setting. Somehow, Andy’s own love for falconry, I think, is what enables him to tell a story with a depth that very few authors manage.—Treebeard Rating: Five Stars.
What a great read. There is murder abduction sex & action. Frank is a P.I that is hired to find a missing sister but that is not all. A older couple have been murdered but what does that have to do with Cartwright going missing. Her sister Cassidy wants to find her but she doesn't want anyone to know yet. Her father is a politician that has many skeletons in his closet that will cause so much harm to many people. Who can Frank trust and what is the truth as there are so many lies. Can Frank find Cartwright before it is too late? There are secrets that will come out and the truth is not what anyone expected. There are many shady people that will do anything to keep their boss's secrets but would that include murdering his daughter? The story unfolds at a steady pace not a dull moment. The characters were complex yet you can relate to them. I would have no problem in recommending this book. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley
Frank Pavlicek is a private investigator in his home town Charlottesville, Virginia. Answering his phone, he get a surprise -- the daughter of the congressman is calling. Cassidy is trying to find out what's happened to her twin sister. Cassidy believes that her father, Tor, had something to do with the disappearance of her sister. Does he? Frank makes inquiries even though Cassidy's evidence is flimsy. By working on this case, he realizes his ex-wife and daughter besides his red tailed hawk are in danger, due to his uncovering secrets and betrayals in the congressman's family.
This action packed mystery focuses on Frank who thinks he is wasting time on this case and his client. This is a good investigative story. Read it!
Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book free from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I was not obliged to write a favorable review, or even any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.
I've been reading big name authors for years, waiting impatiently for the next book to come out. My kids bought me a Kindle , so I thought why not expand my library a bit. I found a couple authors I liked, but light reading, nothing that I couldn't walk away from for a day or two. I had about given up looking for a book that really hooked me when I discovered this book. So nice to read a book that is fast paced with enough twists and turns to keep you going. His descriptions of a scene are short but effective, and let you "see" perfectly without a long-winded paragraph that makes you want to skip pages. I will definitely be buying the rest of the series. Thank you, Andy.
This thriller has it all: dark secrets, family, emotion, and a cast of characters that is outstanding. It is hard to put down as the action and suspense continues page after page. I have to admit that I didn't see the end coming, but it was so very fitting. everyone in the story is a character in depth. Relations have improved between Frank and his daughter Nicole, but they seem to stay the same with the local police. In addition to the action and suspense, the byplay between the characters, both friend and foe, is very entertaining. A great well-written story that leaves you hungering for more.
Very enjoyable book. Crisp writing and an attention grabbing plot. Rich and corrupt. Do they always go together? A philandering politician, just as if such a thing was remotely possible. And the band of thugs which you would associate with rich, corrupt and philandering. But to go so far as kidnap his own daughter? Certainly makes for an interesting plot. And to top it off the PI is into falconry, although rather than a falcon it is a hawk. An age old sport that was used to feed the families of the falconer in days past. Set in rural Virginia, or it was once rural, this is first class reading entertainment. Sure to appease those with an appetite for thriller mysteries.
Gripping action-packed thriller A PI is approached to find a missing twin. With a lot of twists and turns including congressional sex scandal, hit and run accidents, and other secrets and betrayals it turns into a murder investigation. There are several potential suspects, but are truly not sure who is responsible until the end,. The author weaves a good story with complex likable characters. The story keeps you guessing and is full of danger and suspense. I would highly recommend this book.
Note that I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It started out really good but then took a fast dive downhill. By the time I got halfway through, my interest was gone. I just wanted the end to come and soon, so I could move on to something more interesting. It's highly unlikely that I will read anything else by this author.
A Killing Sky - NR Andy Straka When a Congressman's daughter disappears, Charlottesville P.I. and falconer Frank Pavlicek follows a trail of family secrets to the most dangerous discovery of all-the truth.
It has been awhile since I read this book...I looked back at my reading list and I gave it a 5 out of 5 so I know I really liked it....and the reviews I have read about it have been great......SOOOOO......I can honestly say this is a great book to read!!! Sorry for being so vague.... : )
A good mystery, with a complicated plot full of twists. Private Detective Frank is an easy-going hero with the necessary streaks of stubbornness and idealism. The story is well-written (with a few typos). Fans of Spencer or the Dick Francis books should enjoy this one. I'd have liked more falconry.
it began as a missing girl and led into a huge political scandal with well known politician pulling strings that turned into kidnapping. PI Frank Pavlicek pulls in friends, and favors to help solve this strange case.
I enjoy Andy Straka's retired Detective Pavlicek and his involvement in helping solve police cases. Not as riveting as some authors, but quite a nice read.
