The New Destroyer: Guardian Angel

THE DESTROYER NEVER DIES . . . .

VIVA LA REVOLUCION!

When a dozen border patrol volunteers are murdered in New Mexico, apparent victims of Mexican nationals, Dr. Harold W. Smith of the super-secret agency CURE worries the first salvo in a new border dispute has been fired.  His worst fears are realized with the appearance of the charismatic Santa Ana, a uniformed, would-be despot with a silver tongue and a thirst for bloody revolution.

General Santa Anna has redrawn the border between the U.S. and Mexico to fit his own twisted version of reality, and thousands of illegal aliens are drawn to his message of liberation.  The Southwest is on fire, and as the revolution explodes the entire nation is at risk.  It seems the brazen general has planned for every eventuality.  Except one...

Mostly MIA for the past four years, Remo Williams, CURE's one man enforcement arm, has returned to the U.S. just in time to prevent Armageddon.  With his Korean mentor Chiun, the Master of Sinanju, at his side, America just might live to see mañana.

But it turns out Santa Anna is not the only threat to The Destroyer.  Remo not only must save the United States from civil war, he must square off against the only woman who ever killed him...

Warren Murphy was an American author, most famous as the co-creator of The Destroyer series, the basis for the film Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. He worked as a reporter and editor and after service during the Korean War, he drifted into politics.

Murphy also wrote the screenplay for Lethal Weapon 2. He is the author of the Trace and Digger series. With Molly Cochran, he completed two books of a planned trilogy revolving around the character The Grandmaster, The Grandmaster (1984) and High Priest (1989). Murphy also shares writing credits with Cochran on The Forever King and several novels under the name Dev Stryker. The first Grandmaster book earned Murphy and Cochran a 1985 Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original, and Murphy's Pigs Get Fat took the same honor the following year.

His solo novels include Jericho Day, The Red Moon, The Ceiling of Hell, The Sure Thing and Honor Among Thieves. Over his career, Murphy sold over 60 million books.

He started his own publishing house, Ballybunion, to have a vehicle to start The Destroyer spin-off books. Ballybunion has reprinted The Assassin's Handbook, as well as the original works Assassin's Handbook 2, The Movie That Never Was (a screenplay he and Richard Sapir wrote for a Destroyer movie that was never optioned), The Way of the Assassin (the wisdom of Chiun), and New Blood, a collection of short stories written by fans of the series.

He served on the board of the Mystery Writers of America, and was a member of the Private Eye Writers of America, the International Association of Crime Writers, the American Crime Writers League and the Screenwriters Guild.

Despite the Goodreads listing, this is the first of the Tor Destroyer books. It did a great job harkening back to the heyday of the series while feeling less like a quickly written action paperback and more like a suspense novel. In the end though it is solid Remo Williams. I am sorry to hear Murphy and Mulaney's deal with Tor fell through, but glad to have a few more to read before I run out. This book won't change your life, but the nostalgia was great and it was fun to see Remo and Chiun back in action.

This must've been the most right wing thing I have read for awhile. Also, this must be the favourite book of that cunt of a president with orange tan. But despite all that, this managed to entertain me here and there. Maybe because it was about Remo and Chiun.

I've been loving and reading "The Destroyer" since I learned to read, nearly my entire life (I largely learned *to* read on Remo Williams and Conan the Barbarian). Late in the series, I fell behind due to financial issues. I'm trying to pick back up when and where I can, which bring me to

"Guardian Angel", in which the basic characters of Remo and Chiun are competently handled (I actually think that co-author Jim Mullaney has done some *excellent* work on the series. Pretty much the best outside of the early material by the creators), but this is *the* most politically dishonest, ignorant, xenophobic, nonsensical right-wing BS that's ever been published in a Destroyer novel that I've read.

With "The New Destroyer" rebranding, original author Warren Murphy co-wrote the novels with Jim Mullaney, and his reactionary, bigoted ignorance shines through in this like a Scumbag Beacon in the Night. He misrepresents the core issues, the Clinton presidency, the Bush Presidency. . .

It's just bad. Had only Mullaney authored this one, it would have been fine, but Murphy crapped all over it. It really makes you think about the restraint that Sapir brought to the series back in the day.

They are back and better than ever

I loved the old destroyer series and for a while it kind of languished but this new series is outstanding. I wish they would reboot the movie.

I'm a big fan of the pulp Remo series couple decades ago. I'm not sure this one got to the quite same level of hilariousness.

#2 in the New Destroyer series. Remo and Chiun tackle the open border crisis. Much chaos ensues.

This book was exactly what I expected it to be - a darn fun read. If you have been a fan of the series, don't hesitate. If you haven't been introduced to Remo and Chiun, this is as good one to start with as any. If you like political satire, or just want to vent your frustration at how broken the world is, this book will satisfy.

This book was the rebirth of two characters that had fallen badly by mismanagement of the previous publisher. Warren Murphy, one of the original creators, re-assumed control and with James Mullaney returned Remo and Chiun to those wonderful characters we longtime fans knew and loved.

As always, I love these books, tho this newer series lacks some of the power of the original. with Remo and Chiun seemingly getting along a lot better, the impact isn't as strong. But again, as always, a fun, fun read.
