Charles Dudley Warner was an American essayist, novelist, and friend of Mark Twain, with whom he co-authored the novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today.
Warner travelled widely, lectured frequently, and was actively interested in prison reform, city park supervision, and other movements for the public good. He was the first president of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and, at the time of his death, was president of the American Social Science Association.
This collection is so top heavy that if it were piled up in reverse chronological order it would topple over with 19th Century to blame. I read this volume completely but decided to focus on the other periods in next volumes since my own reading record is also 19-20 Century top heavy. In this way it serves as an interesting guide to become scantily familiar with names that survived into the 19th Century, a prodigious amount time. Some of the 19th Century names included did not survive the one hundred or so years.
