Re-read 2021: The fourth volume and I am glad I am rereading this series. Yes, it is depressing, but we are finally breaking out of the mold of > someone does something not nice > gets cursed > Hell for everyone. We have had two stories with a twist in this one. One I definitely didn't see coming and was an interesting one, but also sad (plus featured so much bullying that made me just sick to my stomach), and the other had a nice twist along with a fake Hell Girl site. It was quite interesting to read, though I found the last story a bit odd, given how things suddenly changed at the ending it just didn't make sense and didn't flow right.
The bonus were fun, though I am still not a fan of Kikuri.

My previous complaints with the series was that many of the previous Hell Girl clients followed the same formula & didn't really seem to have that much of a need to summon HG's services. The previous volume & this volume have shown an incredible change in the formula so far, much to my delight.

This volume returns to the chapter story mode with several notable tales such as a girl with an incredibly abusive father & a girl who wishes to summon HG to deal with a nasty ex-friend... only to discover that she's not the only one who summoned HG to deal with her.

This volume really did put an interesting spin on the previous formula, with one character who really did have a life or death need to summon HG as well as a girl who has to deal with the harsh reality of what it is to send someone to hell. People had promised me that the series would get better & it has. Consider the first 2 volumes an overly long prelude to volumes 3 & 4, which really get the meat of the story going.

In this volume we finally learn a little about the past of the young woman who guides deserving people to hell. In addition, the volume includes some oddly moving pieces, but the questions get more complex. Is someone who abuses dogs as deserving of a horrible fate as someone who abuses human beings? Also, as the urban legend of the website grows, what kind of real-world effects will the legend have? The questions and their accompanying answers keep getting tougher. As with Death Note, the philosophical side gets deeper without getting in the way of telling a good story.

It was interesting to see how Ai became Hell Girl! I enjoyed the story of how the horrible woman who abused dogs ended up going to Hell, too. What a bitch!

See my review on Volume 1, as it applies to this one as well.
