When Mr. and Mrs. Shineyshoes leave for the day, their dog Claude and his sock puppet sidekick, Sir Bobblysock, hit the slopes. From Alex T. Smith's hilariously illustrated early chapter book series.
Claude and his best friend Sir Bobblysock go to the Snowy Mountains to swish down the powdery slopes. They throw snowballs, learn to ski, and enter a snow-sculpture contest. But when an avalanche threatens their winter wonderland, Claude must come to the rescue. What a wonderful day!
Quirky, delightfully odd, and positively surreal, Alex T. Smith's beloved Claude series promises fits of giggles for readers transitioning from picture books to chapter books. Two-color illustrations throughout.
Alex T. Smith is the creator of the much-loved and bestselling Claude fiction series for early readers. He was the official World Book Day illustrator in 2014, and other recent accolades include the UKLA Picture Book Award for Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion and the Children’s Book of the World Illustration Award for illustrating Dodie Smith’s The Hundred and One Dalmatians. When not working, Alex enjoys doodling in his sketchbook, reading, people-watching, and eavesdropping. He lives under the watchful eye of his small canine companions, who are a constant source of inspiration to him.

I really liked Claude … and his best friend Sir Bobblysock (who is, in fact, a sock). He is a cute and fun little guy, but he doesn’t always know how to behave properly. In this book, he learns lots of stuff – using our inside and outside voices, especially in a library and out near snow covered mountains, plus some other snow safety – and he learns it all in a fun way. It was very cute.
The class: I have been working with them on sitting through longer books. I know, 96 pages seems a little long, but a lot of it is pictures – it’s a chapter book for the little ones who are just starting out with reading. The kids had a lot of fun with this book and it was funny watching them whisper in the book center afterwards (because that’s how you’re supposed to act in a library) and to see them add the snow safety they learned into their dramatic play. I had several ask me to open my computer up so they could look at it again.
Favorite line: “Well, of course Claude had a tea tray he could use. He always kept one in his beret – with a full tea set just in case there was a tea-based emergency.” And who HASN’T had a “tea-based emergency” at least some time in their lives? :)
I adore these books, I truly do. The witty, warm illustrations coupled with a mischievous dog and his best friend - Sir Bobblysock - combine to make beautiful books. Claude on the Slopes is no exception.
I love the round richness of the illustrations. I love that people have breasts and bellies. I love that the library has a book called "Peter Pan's People". I love that Sidney Snood and his fabulous moustache exists. I love that Claude and Sir Bobblysock are back from their adventure before the grown ups get back in from work. I love the illustrations (I would buy a print of every single page) and I love how I am overusing the word love in this review and I love that I don't care!
There is a part of me that wants these books to be mandatory, to have them given out to everyone and sung out about on street corners by people using their OUTDOOR VOICES. There is such joy inherent in each and every page. Claude is perfection and perfection is Claude. There's really very little else to say.
Claude on the Slopes is filled with adventure. Claude is fun-filled book chocked full of fun, innocence and adventure. Claude and his best friend Sir Bobbysock go on a vacation. Claude likes to experience life and trouble seems to find them both. They get into all sorts of escapades. They enter a snowman building contest. Soon they learn to ski, they have a snowball battle. They even get involved in hair-raising an avalanche and mountain rescue too. The illustrations are fantastic. And Kids will love the antics of Claude and Sir Bobbysocks!
„Timelines”. Тези красиви, (с)нежно илюстровани истории са чудесна отправна точка за деца, които тепърва набират увереност със самостоятелното четене на „големи“ книги, но са готови да забавляват и всеки, който си пада по тънкия хумор на Алекс Т. Смит и/или копнее за една следдекемврийска доза празничното настроение. Прочетете ревюто на „Книжни Криле“: https://knijnikrile.wordpress.com/202...
Claude is a delight. I was hooked from the introduction of his best friend, Mr. Bobblysocks. His beret could give Mary Poppins' carpet bag a run for its money, and any pup who carries a tea tray for tea based emergencies is a winner with me. Alex T. Smith's illustrations are very charming and Claude is a loveable rascal, inadvertently causing trouble and then saving the day in spectacular fashion.
In this particular installment Claude experiences his first snow and all of its attendant glee. Snowball fighting, sledding, snowmen and skiing all play a role in the adventure. Sir Bobblysock, a sock after my own heart, prefers the apres ski atmosphere and spends some of the adventure enjoying something hot in the lodge.
Claude on the Slopes would be great as a read aloud with children who are ready to listen to a chapter book but still want lots of illustrations. Our family looks forward to reading more of this series.
This is a wonderfully illustrated and cleverly told story for children. And for those capable of getting all the jokes and understanding all the nuances, this book is helpful in teaching reading skills. But as a reading teacher of ESL students trying to learn to read in a second language, this book, though it is the kind of book I would need to use to teach critical reading skills, has too much nonsensical humor in the book that would prove frustrating and confusing. The fact that one of the main characters is a somehow-intelligent sock will make it almost impossible for those kids to interpret the meaning of the text and illustrations. First and second graders not reading at or above grade level would also struggle for the same reasons. I can strongly recommend this book, but to teach reading skills, it needs to be used with independent readers.

This is the third book in a delightfully fun book series for children. Claude is a dog, who along with his sidekick Sir Bobblysock ( a real sock!) explore adventures and learn lessons along the way. This book describes the excitement of experiencing snow for the first time. Claude provides advice to his mischievous friend, such as indoor and outdoor voices! Kids will find Claude quirky with his beret full of important things!
Kids will forward to reading more books about he adventures of Claude and his friends.
We did Claude in the City in class and all the children loved it. Three of them went out and bought more, one of them asking for about three for his birthday! We read this one next. Although we enjoyed it, I don't think they loved it as much Claude in the City. It was still silly and humorous, both for children and adults but they definitely preferred the bum art and banana stethoscope of the City book. I personally loved him pulling a tea tray out of his beret for tea based emergencies.
Claude and Sir Bobblysock discover snow and the fun of winter pasttimes...Claude goes in more for the sport activities and Sir Bobblysock explores the snowman arts and the pleasures of a hot drink at the lodge.
This was absolutely hilarious. My favorite Claude yet. It made me laugh out loud a few times. I also picked up a few new British terms since I'm reading the British version (it is sledging instead of sledding). Lots of wintry fun.
What a barrel of laughs! Claude and his brat friend, Sir Bobblesock get up to loads of adventures in the snow. I love how Claude pulls all sort of weird and wonderful things from his beret, similar to Mary Poppins and her carpet bag. Can’t wait to share this series with the lower primary students.
Claude’s parents, Mr. & Mrs. Shinyshoes, have no idea what mischief and adventure he has everyday when they leave. He gets himself in all kids of trouble but everything always turns out just fine. This is a cute and funny early chapter book series.
Cute! Cute! Cute! Claude sees snow for the first time ever and he just has to play. What is better than a dog snow-tubing/boarding/skiing on a tea tray. So cute! Kids will love this book.
I'm completely delighted by this series. It's like a mix between Amelia Bedelia, Mary Poppins, and Bad Kitty. Funny, clever, silly, and smart. Really enjoyable.
Sir Bobblysock had no desire to ski or rescue people from avalanches in the mountains. He just wanted to relax and sit in a spa. Sir Bobblysock has a whole vibe that I covet.
