"Right from the beginning this story explodes." Author of the Vicarage Bench Series, Mimi Barbour
"Don't expect to be lulled to sleep, this story doesn't stop moving. As fast as it is happening for our protagonist, Quinn, is as fast as Mayer takes us along for the ride." The Cabin Goddess (Reviewer)
"The premise is an interesting mix of original and classic . . . the familial bonds and an emerging love triangle are really what drive the story and give it more dimension. Highly recommend!" Author of The Slave Girl Chronicles, JC Andrijeski
Overview of Dark Waters
The bond between sisters is stretched to the limit as they are thrown into the world of the Fae. As they learn their places in this new world, secrets and dangers from the past emerge setting them on a dangerous path; one that would see them face off not as sisters, but enemies. Add in a wicked love triangle and you have the start of a new twist on classic Irish lore.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was born into a family of Star Wars nuts. I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.
It was hard to get a handle on the protagonist, Quinn, and what kind of person she was other then a burning need to save her sister, and reacting to random drama after drama. The romance was hard to believe, as she somehow insta-loved people she just met for no apparent reason - particularly given that Luke was an arrogant and patronising jackass, there was just nothing to the character to even like! Even Bres, the good guy, had no real depth though was at least supportive. Some of the storyline didn't make sense, and felt rushed and messy, though you can still see the promise in the writing. Go read the Riley Adamson + follow on series, or Desert Cursed instead - much better character development and story planning. This feels more like 3 novellas.
This was all three books in one so my review will encompass the whole. I liked the storyline; it was unique and inventive. As the story progresses into the second and even more so the third book the character development emerges on each one of them. The best part is the world building. The descriptions of the characters and the settings are so good. You are taken underwater and through forests all the while meeting strange and exotic creatures that become (in some cases) vital to the story. The series ends perfectly, wrapped up neatly. I really enjoyed the series. I really liked not having to wait for the next book too.
This was so very different from what I am used to reading by Shannon. Not a bad different, just different. I can definitely tell this is Shannon's first works. There were a few editing issues, which caused me to bump it down. I also cannot stand love triangles. Though I guessed early on how it was going to go, it was still annoying.
Despite the annoying love triangle, i still could not out it down. Was it my favorite work by Shannon? Nope. I still enjoyed it, though.
Like any author, she grew with time. I like most of her newer books which made me read this one. I only finished because I hate not finishing. Turned out okay but many repetitive lines, how often in 2 minutes can you, “ give everything u have or it took everything u had?”
I have 5 of her series and they are page turners...I have to make myself turn off my Kindle and go to bed. This is an intriguing story that resonates with my Celtic memories. The witch in me wants to go there again. Hope Shannon will write more about Quinn.
Even though Quinn is already past coming of age and Ashling hasn't quite gotten there yet that's what this book really reminds me of, only a lot more dangerous and involved. The characters and story are fantastic and fleshed out very well. It's so well written I turned down a chance to go out to eat so I could keep reading. I really enjoyed all three books.
I read the whole thing, so I can confidently advise you to give this set a pass. If you wanted more after reading the Rylee Adamson and Elemental series, you will be disappointed at the quality of this one. It's just bad. The plot is all over the place, the characters have no set character traits, and the heroine is seriously annoying.
This Trilogy was amazing , moving and I just cannot say how much you should just read this trilogy. If you like fantasy worlds With A Little Romance life and death with a few Celtic gods thrown in, read this trilogy.
I bought these three books in one which was a real treat, I thought that I was going to be hit with more episodes for more money, but that wasn’t the story. I really liked the series and recommend it to anyone.
I put off reading this series cause i didn't think i was going to like them, buuuut... Like all of Shannon Mayer's books she never disappoints me. I flew all 3 of the books and wish it wouldn't of ended so soon.
I was sick and tired of reading the same drivel day after day. My own fault of course. Still, Shannon is a breath of fresh air. Not gloom and Doom, but Love conquers all. This was a nice reprieve from blood and glory, though there was plenty. Enjoy!
She does it time and time again. Rocks me to my very core and picks me up to dust off and sends me back into my own world with a little “magic” of my own. ! Thanks Sannnon You’re the best!
I am a big fan of Shannon Mayer. Somehow I overlooked this series. This story just drew me in and held me captive. I didn't want it to end. Great writing.
I enjoyed this so much. I got so involved and could not put it down. You won't be disappointed! I will read all of her books I have already gone through most of them
A fun twist on some old Celtic legends, a love triangle and the enduring love of two, sisters ... a delightful and sparkling page turner ... read it in one night !
A story where the heroine grows up and stays true to her family and friends. Lots of action and villains. Love wins out over everything else. Enjoyable!!
I loved it! This is the fifth series of books I have read by Shannon Mayer and I have enjoyed each one. Her characters are so believable and the worlds they inhabit are so creative. I love how she incorporates myths and legends but gives them a completely new twist. Overall a riveting story with several twists that kept me guessing and enthralled from chapter one.
OK, this is 3 very strong stars. The story had such potential, but I feel it was missing / lacking content. The basic outline and story was there, but I would have loved more details and depth to the story. This story could of easily been twice as long and would have been awesome! Overall, it was a good story that I enjoyed reading.
I would not have been happy if I read each book by itself, glad I got them in one volume.
This was a potentially great story. However, I found the dialogue and story line forced. Rather than develop the story and take me on a journey. I could see the ending a mile away. I was like watching a bad day time soap opera or a b movie type horror. I like Shannon Mayers work I'm a fan but this was NOT her best work. Good story idea badly executed. Still worth a read but set the right expectations for yourself
Im not much of a reader but i very much enjoyed this book finished it in two days. I loved the little romance and tons of action. Just when you think its coming together another twist gets thrown at you. I highly recommend it.
It is a wild and twisty path that Quinn must travel to save her sister from an ancient evil bent on destroying the realms of fae and humans. Learning her family's magical history along the way, she learn to believe in herself first.
I read some negative review of this trilogy and I don't know what they were talking about. The plod was consistent and the story kept moving. I was quite satisfied. mrg
There hasn't been a book yet by Shannon Mayer that I haven't wholeheartedly enjoyed. You can almost "feel" the characters. This is a third series I've read. Going to go for a fourth.
interesting but I would classify this in the young adult fiction genre. I expected a bit more after having read another of Ms. Mayers series. I have one more series to read.
