Journey to the Heart by New York Times bestselling author of Codependent No More, Beyond Codependency, and Lessons of Love, contains 365 insightful daily meditations that inspire readers to unlock their personal creativity and discover their divine purposes in life.
“Melody Beattie gives you the tools to discover the magnificence and splendor of your being.” –Deepak Chopra, author of Jesus and Buddha
Melody Beattie was an American self-help author best known for her groundbreaking work on codependency. Born in 1948 in Minnesota, she endured a traumatic childhood marked by abuse and early substance addiction. After achieving sobriety, she became a licensed addiction counselor and began writing to help others navigate emotional recovery. Her 1986 book Codependent No More became a bestseller, selling eight million copies and helping to bring the concept of codependency into mainstream awareness. Over her career, she authored 18 books, including Beyond Codependency, The Language of Letting Go, and Make Miracles in Forty Days. Though her work is often associated with Co-Dependents Anonymous, her books were independent of the program. Beattie’s personal life reflected many of the struggles she addressed in her work, including four marriages and the loss of a son. Her writing often drew from her own experiences with grief, addiction, and healing. In early 2025, she was forced to evacuate her Malibu home due to wildfires and died shortly after at her daughter’s home in Los Angeles from heart failure.
Worth the read; one meditation per day for an entire year. Most impactful when used simultaneously alongside asana, meditation, inquiry and journaling. Some of the entries feel repetitive, but they serve as great reminders.
Read one of these meditations each morning. Each day was something different though sometimes the themes overlapped. Reading this got my morning started right! I enjoyed it. Some of the messages really hit home!
I can truly say that this book changed my life more than any other. It is daily meditations for people in codepedent relationships. It gave me the courage to take steps and make huge changes that I don't know if I ever would have been brave enough to make without her wisdom.
My favourite book of all time. I come back to it almost daily and find it very grounding. It’s been opened so many times it has pages falling out. A forever on my bedside table.
I read this, this year, in the morning along with the meditations in The Language of Letting Go. I will always hold these books close to me. There’s something about Melody Beattie’s work and experiences that have given me hope and have made me feel less alone and crazy. I recommend her work to anyone who struggles with co dependency and self love.
I made it 10% into this book. It felt flat, trite, and uninspired to me, and I just lost any interest in continuing on with it. Life is short, and the books I want to read are many.
I really loved having this as my companion through the year on my bedside table. Sometimes the prompts were more valuable to me than other times but in general I think this is a beautiful book 🤍
I liked the one passage a day concept. It reminded me of the Daily Stoic. Some of it felt a bit repetitive but 365 days is a lot of lessons so it makes sense that there would be some overlap.
Reading these meditations each morning allowed me to ground myself and think about aspects of life in a new way. Of course some I resonated with more than others, but generally very happy I incorporated these into my days. Will likely go back through to spark ideas for journaling.
A good book with common sense meditations on your life. Life is not easy and definitely not fair, but with perseverance, grit and love, especially from God we can get through the tough parts and enjoy the easier terrain of the good parts. Recommended…SLT
After reading this book throughout the year, I now believe that everyone should read one of these "daily" books per year.
It is such a great habit to read that daily reminder. In the case of this book, it was about the journey to the heart. But I imagine you can find these types of books on any topic. So pick one and go make 2022 your best year in that particular area.

I personally enjoy reading books that are good for the soul and that were written to help you evolve yourself. I started reading this book over a year ago and can say it has positively impacted my life. Everyday I started my day off reading this book and it immediately changed my mindset for the rest of the day. This book has about a half page to a page passage written for each day of the year, starting at January 1st. I personally enjoyed this because I am not the biggest reader and I find it harder to stay focused the longer I have to read. Being able to just read the small passage then elaborate on it in my journal worked very well for me. The passages in this book are all different but all cover how to handle certain situations in our life. After reading this book, I can easily say it has helped me evolve as well. as overcome many struggles I had faced this past year.
This book belongs on my "currently reading" shelf always, even though I have completed it before. Each time I read it I take away something meaningful. It is a beautiful book, that I received as a gift, and often share with others that I think could benefit from these words. While I am not always good at reading it daily, even when I travel I carry it along because I am bound to need some wise words at some point on my journey. The way it is written is not pushy or forceful but gently suggests in a way that allows you to choose what it means in your personal situation. I think anyone can benefit from going on this Journey to the Heart.
I bought a paperback copy of this book way back in 1998 when I was in Nova Scotia. I felt like a lost soul as I constrained myself to focus on a training programme while nursing a severely broken heart. Missing my aging mom back home, awake all night to finish the presentations for the training, and crying desperately to hold on to a love already lost, I would console myself with this book. Melody Beattie slowly redirected my thoughts and salved my heart.
It's so good to turn the pages once again while my heart is at a totally different happy phase now...
This is not my typical go to...but I gave it a shot. I kept it next to my hair dryer and every day I would read just a little passage during my beauty time. ☺️this book delivered. I loved this message. I loved that she was on a journey with you and alone on a road trip with a vague plan. Isn’t that what life is after all? I am definitely starting over tomorrow. Big big new fan. Highly recommended.
I started this book a little over a year ago when a teacher read an entry from it in a Yoga class. It became a little piece of my daily life. Although not perfect and life got in the way, I tried to read a daily excerpt everyday. Highly recommend during your morning coffee or in bed before your head hits the pillow. A little piece of comfort and inspiration and daily reminders of loving yourself, the universe and those around you.
A friend gave me this book, and I am grateful. I read it every morning. Melody Beattie truly does get to the heart of the matter, the heart of living well. Each daily read only takes a few moments and serendipitously urges me in the direction I need to go for that day. This book is a wonderful gift to give yourself and others.
I love this book. It’s a daily meditation devotional full of inspiring thoughts and prayer like lines. I purchased it over a year ago and have read through some of it twice. It’s a book to pick up again and again whenever one needs a bit of joy, peace or solitude. It can be read daily, in pieces or whenever needed.
I loved these. Everyday for the last year, these have brought me wisdom and comfort. I'd probably keep reading, but my marginalia is through the roof. So instead I'm starting Beattie's other daily meditation book, The Language of Letting Go.
More often than not, the daily teaching was exactly what I needed to hear.
I have had this book for several years. It is by far my favorite daily meditation book. Simple stories, simple ideas, it is like a warm hug every day. It's bent cover sits at my bedside, or side table and I read it everyday or if I miss a few days I'll do a week at a time. I also have tagged favorite passages for time when I need them.
