I have put this into the read catagory, however it was never actually finished. This was awfully slow going and really boring. I read about 100 pages and then gave up.

Great read

Susan Lewis novels are always so exciting and she never fails to have me hooked, there is always so much going on in her novels but that's what I love about them, love, crime, death. A tale that kept me on my toes.

The treatment of women in this book is horrendous. It was published in 2001 but reads like something from 1970s. Submissive females accepting and justifying poor treatment from men and only finding their 'power' through having breast enlargement/plastic surgery to increase their appeal to men. I love a trashy read but this was too trashy for anyone with 5 or more brain cells and left a bad taste. The plot essentially was good but towards the end the characters inexplicably got into a sexual frenzy and the last 150 pages are mostly endless sex scenes, in most of which, surprise, women are treated with a lack of respect. Its impressive to make sex scenes both boring and irritating so well done there. Let's never talk about this again and forget it all happened.

A new author to me. Beth Ashby's political advisor husband is arrested for the murder of a young woman. He says he didn't do it, but offers no evidence and doesn't seem to want help or even Beth any more. Two reporters get onto the case and uncover a global financial conspiracy. Meanwhile Beth is about to have a book published under another name and it offers her a chance to get away from her old life, but that puts her in more danger. The reporters have a history and this is resolved as they work closer together. A sharp twist at the end that I had no idea about, made for a very satisfying read.

700 pages was far too much for this story and I'm far too stubborn not to have finished what I started. Perhaps I was more in the mood for a heavier read but the story format was far too basic, the thoughts of the main female character were droll and degrading to woman. The author was attempting to create a strong female character but I found her boring and whiny. I previously have really admired Susan Lewis but this book just didn't grab me

This book was chosen by my book group and I found it a chore to read. I found the underlying story of corruption boring and the main characters either unlikable or irritating. And it was far far too long. That's 11 hours of my life I won't get back.
