"Brimming with insecure diction and spurious dignity, as the author belabours his prejudices. His sentences bump and grind like mating cockroaches." -- David Cohen.
I loathed your book Paul Henry – do you feel outraged about that? You know I once thought you were funny – I even agreed with you on some issues. But after reading Outraged, all I can say is that you come across as a curmudgeonly old man with zero tolerance for anyone that is not you, with no insight at all as to people’s feelings and most of all, absolutely no recollection at all of what it is like to be poor. You’ve forgotten your roots and become a complete narcissist. You make silly assumptions, rash generalisations, and, judging by your book, you’ve pigeon-holed or stereotyped every single person who has ever crossed your path. Forget about that fact that no two humans are alike – you’ve just lumped everyone together and branded them in the way you see fits.
But perhaps that is what Outraged is all about. Maybe you set out to shock? At least you can’t be accused of being one-sided or unfair - you’ve had a dig at everything and everyone – race, creed, social standing, there isn’t a single area where you haven’t set out to offend. And by the way – do you swear as consistently in real life as you do in your book? Is there any need for it? Swearing doesn’t enhance the book in any way – it’s not funny. Verbal swearing can be forgiven – it’s a heat of the moment thing - but using expletives in the written form merely highlights a lack of education and is just plain lazy.
You say that Outraged is about “the things that piss me off” and your need to chronicle your outrage at those things – well I just have to say that there are an awful lot of things that piss you off Paul and maybe you need to take a chill pill. The one thing I do like about you, Paul, is that you don’t approve of political correctness – there we do have a meeting of the minds.
For those of you that pick up this book be prepared to be Outraged – you won’t be disappointed.
Great book, but not for the easily offended, that's for sure. Most of the things that annoy Paul Henry annoy me too, and it was entertaining to read his views! I like that he isn't afraid to speak his mind or conform to what others expect. Good on him. I actually laughed out loud in some places, he is that outrageous.
If you don't know who Paul Henry is, you will be more than likely offended by many of his stances on things. I wouldn't say I was offended, but I did find myself disagreeing with a lot of the more "serious" positions he had, but agreeing with most of the less than serious things. I.e. paying for parking, or people's arrogance while driving.
I really enjoyed hearing many of the anecdotal stories he had, and felt he drew out my love for the United States through his words.
Henry is arrogant and, fuck, does he love to complain about trivial shit, but that's just his personality.
I passed the book off to my old man so we'll see what he thinks, cos he loves Paul Henry!
Even more challenging than the first book "What was I thinking" the publisher should also be praised as its not your 'usual' book, even the page numbers are hand drawn and pictures and notes populate the tome as well. No-one is spared here from his caustic view and even tho I found myself agreeing with much of it the pace and volume is probably too high for many! Mind you I laughed out loud so often my wife told me to read quietly ....preferably downstairs! Paul Henry is no shrinking violet!! End of
don't read this if you don't like paul henry as you will not like this book. if you don't like him, don't expect this book to change your mind. i took this book with the big grain of salt it deserves. and i did enjoy it.
Quite an entertaining read despite many of Paul's 'ideas' contradicting one another. There is a lot of padding (pictures/lists etc) as well so it's a quick read. Steep at $35 though, my advice would be to read it piece by piece at Whitcoulls whenever you pop by.
In parts I was offended... but I expect no less from Paul Henry. Mostly though, I agree with his observations and he makes me laugh. Mum's pics are excellent!
Like him or loath him, respect the man for his courage to voice his opinions in this far too fake and politically correct environment. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
