I swear whenever I feel a slump coming on, I just open up a Vernetta Henderson book and dive right on in!!
Being the fourth in a series, this books was really twisted, in that it had a lot of different small things going on, but it all lead back to one huge case. It starts off with a murder and a rape case that resulted in a two million dollar payoff which lead to a crooked company, back stabbing family members, crooked cops, damaged careers and still got us to take a look at the Nation of Islam and what they are about, not what the media or outside sources says that they are. (I'm not an expert on the subject, just through research) And it talked about women rights when it comes to their advancements in the working world.
There were moments when I was just dying, Special is one of my favorite characters. And Idk how Vernetta would have solved this one without her.
LA Lawyer Vernetta Henderson is currently representing Lamarr Harris, a 🏀 player, accused of rape. She also takes on a sexual discrimination lawsuit involving women employees of Big Buy department stores. But one of Vernetta's clients, Julie, is found beaten, then hospitalized, but scrummages to her injuries. Now it's become a murder case as well. Vernetta sets out to take on both cases.
This who done what to whom is page after page of suspense. I highly recommend the 📚. Another five ***** rating.
There is one more book left to read: Lawful Deception Book 5 (Vernetta Henderson series).

This is an extremely well-written mystery, and I would recommend it to lovers of great mystery/thriller fiction books. But let me caution you about two things. There is some profanity--not as much as some books in this genre, but definitely there. There are also some sex scenes--not overly graphic, thank goodness. But none of these things bothered me enough to mark my review down.
This story is full of twists and turns that constantly kept me guessing. I was most concerned that the vindication would come at the end--and it did! (But not in the way I thought!) I was quite interested to see the workings of the court system and see what attorneys would do to accomplish their purposes--whether it was legal or not!
This book was truly non-stop action from start to finish, and I was never bored. I thought I would be able to put it down once I started, but I could not. I was not only intrigued with the mystery, but the author's take on religion made things entertaining as well. I believe her message of religious tolerance came across (I agree with that to a degree). Racism was also an important element in this story. The author's writing style was fast-paced and not too detailed--which fit the style of the book quite well. In fact, sometimes the characters were privy to something the readers did not know, and I felt I had to keep writing so I would know what the characters knew. And sometimes the reader was not informed until some time later.
If you are interested in reading an attorney/mystery/thriller novel that will keep you entertained from start to finish, this is definitely it. I would highly recommend it.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
This was my first book by this author and I was hooked from the sample chapters and ordered it immediately. It was fast paced and kept me interested . . . until the last three or four chapters. I found that part to be unrealistic and kind of far-fetched that lawyers and police officers would behave in that way. I was so disappointed by it because I had been so engrossed in the story up until that point. I will read another novel by this author in the hopes that I won't invest hours of reading only to be left unfulfilled with the ending.
This book had me at the edge of my seat. I love an unpredictable book and this was far from predictable. Just when I thought I had it all figured out I learned I had no clue. This suspenseful book had me reading past my bedtime. Pamela Samuels Young never disappoints. I recommend this book.
I borrowed this book through Amazon's Prime Library!
This was an amazing, fast-paced legal thriller. I truly enjoy reading Pamela Samuels Young because I get her and I get her stories.
Oooh my legal reading friends, this is a doosie of a good read. Our favorite African-American female attorney, Vernetta Henderson, has finally branched out on her own with clients that stretch from one side of the coast to the other. Due to her highly publicized previous cases when she worked at a law firm, she has an unending supply of wealthy clients seeking the professional woman's legal assistance.
Once again, she's thrown in the mix of defending a sexual harassment/rape case for her well-known football client and going up against her nemesis, Girlie Cortez. As many times as Vernetta has gone up against Miss Thang, she's never won, and unfortunately, she's beaten her again, or did she?
And what would the Vernetta Henderson series be without all the characters we love--Special definitely was in the house nosing around and seriously fighting for her investigative license--meanwhile, Jefferson, Vernetta's super fine construction worker husband, has some issues with a certain contractor. Love is in the air for Special in this novel and what turns out to be one of the biggest class-action lawsuits Vernetta has ever defended. That particular case, along with her football client's is going to push her to the break, but you know how Vernetta gets down, 'cause girlfriend is never out.
This case is really going to catapult Vernetta to a whole other level with her nemesis, Girlie Cortez, nipping at her damn heels. There are so many legal twists and turns and what I really loved about all the cases coming together, the attorney-client privilege is a rule that many love to use, but seldom understand it's real meaning. Vernetta gets to the crux of it.
Oh, and before I forget, there was, of course, a murder that ties in with all of Vernetta's new cases. This was a wild legal ride, I must say, and I couldn't get enough! Outstanding read! Buckle up readers, you're in for a bumpy ass ride!
Vernetta is a caring lawyer representing Judi, Olive and Ida in a discrimination case against their employer, Big Buy. But Judi when gets brutally killed, the focus is on her live-in wannabe-actor toy boy, Phillip ... did he do it for her insurance money? Or was it her soon-to-be-ex husband, Robby, for the same reason? Or did it have something to do with the secret documents re Big Buy? Will the cops on the case figure it out?
Girlie is the prosecutor Vernetta faces who will do anything ... and I mean anything ... to win a case.
Special, Vernetta's best friend, just got engaged to Calvin, who is becoming a Muslim and expects Special to do the same. She's having issues with it, though, because she feels women should be equal, not submissive to men. I can dig it, Sista!
I liked the writing style ... it was fast-paced and kept me wanting to read more. The chapters are short and snappy, which I like. The language and activity is mature at times.
There are lots of characters but I didn't feel like I was overwhelmed and had no problem keeping track of everyone. I cheered for the good guys and wanted the bad guys to get what was coming to them.
The ending was great! There were lots of twists and resolutions which were totally believable.
It's part of a series but works as a stand alone ... I didn't feel like I'd missed anything by just reading this one. I'd like to read her other books.
The author is a practicing lawyer and this is obvious in her writing. The legal system and procedures are described well without being boring.
Vernetta Henderson is up to her eyeballs in legal woes. She is worrying about a rape case against NFL superstar, Lamarr Harris but she has a pending sexual discrimination case. As one case ends the other heats up...murder, violent beating, and accusations of lawyer misconduct are just a few issues that Vernetta has to figure out. In the meantime police detectives, Mankowski and Thomas, try to connect the puzzle pieces but they are in over their heads. The supporting characters not already mentioned - Special Moore (questions her faith while trying to live out her dreams); Girlie Cortex (funnels her lifetime of hatred to make moves in the legal field); Jefferson Henderson (wants to be a man and protect his wife, Vernetta); Olivia, Ida, Judi, Jane, Evelyn, Rita, and Robyn (Big Buy employees)...the drama and crazy antics will leave your mouth wide open.
ATTORNEY-CLIENT PRIVILEGE is outstanding. The legal details, the suspense, and plot-driven storyline will keep you totally engaged. There is something for everyone in this novel - romance, faith, legal woes, and murder. Be ready to stay up late as you won't be able to wait to find out the next twist to the story. As with other books by Pamela Samuels Young, highly recommended and definitely a page-turner...don't sleep on this one.
Vernetta Henderson is back and she is on a mission. Representing Lamarr “The Hero” Harrison even though she fears he may be guilty, she is eager to win and end this case. The opposing attorney in this civil suit is Girley Cortez and she doesn’t play fair. But just how far will she go to win her cases? Girley is quickly becoming an arch enemy of Vernetta and these two will face of quite a bit in the courtroom. Who will come out victorious?
Judi Irving is Vernetta’s next case, and she is suing a well know convenient store Big Buy for sex discrimination. Judi and two of her coworkers are fed up with the company’s treatment of women. Yes it’s true the CEO and General counsel for the company are women. The evidence is there, they just have to find it. When Judi is murdered and a crucial piece of information turns up missing, the suspect list keeps growing. I love this story and the subplots that were going on.
With a supporting cast that included: Vernetta’s husband, Jefferson, who faces some issues himself and Special, the best friend who had man woes and makes a career change. This novel shows family life, religion issues, money issues and never wavers on a great story. I can easily recommend this book.
SiStar Tea ARC Book Club Inc. 4.5 Star rating Aug Review
This review is the result of winning a GoodReads giveaway.
This is the fourth book in a series. I didn’t read the first three and that may have been a problem in reading this book first. It is definitely a thriller and moves very quickly. But a mystery it is not. The plot was very paint-by-numbers with few surprises. That makes for a boring book unless the characters make it interesting.
The characters here are a bigger problem than the plot. They aren’t simply undeveloped (at least in this book) but they are so badly stereotyped. Girlie Cortez and Special Morgan were particularly offensive in their depiction of women with Girlie also being offensive as an attorney. They were completely unethical in their behavior. They were the worst but none of the other characters fared that much better.
The one thing that did surprise me was the failure to do adequate legal research. If you are going to write legal thrillers, you need to understand the legal system better. There is a legal concept called jurisdiction that would prevent crimes committed in Orange County from being dealt with by the LAPD and the LA District Attorney’s Office. Having that happen is inexcusably sloppy.
First I would like to say I received this book through the goodreads giveaway. I received this book and began reading it and could not put it down. The author Pamela Samuels Young is a wonderful writer. She pulled you into the story as if this was all happening to you. If you love thrillers As I do, you will not want to miss reading this book. It is a wonderful read. This book is full of legal and case type information but you are still able to fully understand all that is being written . I have never read anything by this author before. She takes you on a thrilling suspenseful plot driven journey. Her writing style is so fluid and effortless. She has wonderfully interesting charters and great plot. I really like that the characters are so real as if they are people you have known forever. The competition and the distrust between the different lawyers is very realistic. The story line kept you so enthralled to the very end. I truly enjoyed this book. I will surely be on the look out for more books by this author. She is a must read.
It is nice to read a novel with some interesting Black characters ... including our hero, Vernetta Henderson. Vernetta is an attorney working on two big cases. The first is an NFL football player accused of raping a young groupie ... he loses his endorsement deals and his job as a star wide receiver with the local team. He claims that he's innocent, but, it sure doesn't look that way.
The other case she is handling is a sex discrimination law suit against a big box chain ('Big Buy') being run by a truly evil female CEO. Lots of twists, turns and murders in this part of the story.
However, the most interesting aspect of this story was the information shared about the Nation of Islam. They use a different name ... but, the insights into the process of on-boarding new people into the nation was interesting.
I didn't know that the heroine of this book was part of a series. Turns out that this was the 4th book in the series. I gotta go back and read the first 3 books in the series now!
I won this book in a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.
This book is the first I have read in this series. I didn't care for the Islam vs. Christianity story line. It seemed out of place. Other than that, I thought it had a good plot and likeable characters. I wasn't bored and wanted to keep reading to see if Vernetta could finally beat Girlie.
My March 2013 book club selection. This is a super light, quick read equivalent to an hour tv legal drama. The main plot held my interest and was developed ok. The sub plot about the challenges that can arise when dating outside of your faith could have been more thoughtfully examined and added depth and education to the story.
I was blessed enough to get this one free on my Kindle. Another home run, touch down, field goal for Ms Pamela. Reads like one of those real good episodes of Law and Order mixed with some day time soap opera type shinnagans. Excellent!
One THRILLING suspenseful ride after another...I'm ENJOYING this series...although this one wasn't my favorite...I was still CAUGHT UP in the drama-filled lives of Vernetta, Jefferson, Special, and the rest of this INTRIGUING cast of characters.
Another winner from Pamuela samuels Young. I have been reading this series a little out of order! But I am not lost I like the characters in this series and it was a treat to see her friend,Special, is in this book. Special always adds excitement. Expertly plotted and well developed character and a couple of surprises at the end.
My favorite legal thriller author has a high profile sexual discrimination case and one her clients gets murdered but who did it? The opposing counsel, Girlie Cortez will stop at nothing to win a case. Attracting males all the time with her great legs and surgically enhanced breasts, and with her personality. no women trust her ever.
A pickle, that Special gets involves return boyfriend who has recently converted to Islam. Special wants the married life badly and promises to convert but she promised before seriously exploring what she would have to give up.
There is much more to the story, like company politics, fraud and martial disputes.
I enjoyed this story very much and learned a few things too.
I'm not usually a fan of legal thrillers, but Ms. Samuels Young is an excellent writer who keeps the story moving. I love her Vernetta Henderson character - a strong female character who loves her husband, who is, thank goodness, a strong male character. Her friend Special is a delightful addition, and she alternates between making me laugh with her sass and making my heart break for her when she runs into personal troubles. In this book, opposing council is someone you love to hate, which makes it even more satisfying when Vernetta is victorious.
Another legal suspenseful read as Vernetta takes on 2 cases against her arch nemesis, Girlie. Bestie- Special's assistance proved to be valuable as important information was obtained. Good cast of characters with questionable motives helped make this an enjoyable read
I enjoyed the continuing active story with the heroines friend finding information that reversed trial results. It was good to see that the illegal work of the attorney ended in her being disciplined by the bar.
This was good and Special did her thing as usual 😄.... I'm ready for a Special spin off with Special P. I . Series 🤷🏾#ijs I could listen to her stories every day 😂😂😂😂😁 yes I recommend all of P. S. Y series 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 keep up the good work
