It takes a tough cowboy to tame a wild woman.
Bored with life on the remote Bar Mesa Ranch, pretty young Kayla has taken to stealing from the cowboys. She doesn't need the money, but she loves the rush. Henry looked down at it for a moment, then back up at her. His blue eyes held none of the calmness she'd seen while he was breaking the mare. A cold, angry light filled them. "What are you doing in here?" he demanded.
"I..." Kayla wasn't sure what to say. She could hear her pulse pounding in her ears like a panicked stallion at full gallop. "Uhm."
Henry stepped up into the trailer and pulled the door closed behind him. Dirt streaked his chambray work shirt and jeans, and sweat glistened in his dark hair. The cabin was cramped with one person. With two, there wasn't even room to turn around, and she certainly couldn't squeeze past him to get out. "You're Clay's girl, aren't you? Kyla?" he said.
"Kayla," she corrected him as a pall of dread fell over her. He knew her father. She was dead.
Henry nodded. "I thought so. Clay's a good man. What would your daddy say if he knew his daughter was snooping around in another man's personal property?" Henry asked. He hitched his thumbs in his pockets and stood watching her. Something about his confident posture infuriated her.
"What would he say if he knew you looked at that stuff?" Kayla shot back, pointing at the dirty magazine on the floor between them.
Henry looked down at the magazine for a moment, then laughed. "A cowboy gets lonely on the rodeo circuit," he said. "Besides, from what I saw, you were doing plenty of looking on your own."
Kayla blushed; he'd seen what she was doing. "A girl gets lonely on a big old ranch too," she said lamely.
Henry sighed and shook his head, but he at least seemed somewhat embarrassed to have a young woman in his trailer. "Shoot, girl! If you're lonely, why are you up here alone instead of down at the pen with everybody else?" His blue eyes watched her closely, and when she lowered her gaze to hide her guilt, his brow furrowed in thought. "Wait a second, some of the guys said their wallets have been going light in their trucks. Is that what this is about? Did you come here to steal from me?" His hard voice shook with anger, as though having her snoop in his trailer was fine, if it was for the right reasons.
Kayla felt the reality of her situation come crashing down. Some perfect crime! Sarah Jane had never texted, or the text hadn't gone through. Anything could have gone wrong, and now she'd been caught red-handed by the one cowboy she wanted to like her.
"I'm sorry," she said. "It's just so boring out here. I need something exciting, you know?"
"So you take a man's hard-earned wages for fun?" Henry shook his head in disgust. "You've got a lot to learn if you think that's okay."
"I know it's wrong," Kayla said. "Please, you can't tell anyone. It would crush my parents, and I..."
The fire in Henry's cold blue eyes cut her short. "You should have thought about that before you did it," he said.
