Great book. Slight, mainly for parents of, not adults with, based around two metaphors 'the joke' and 'the robot', very chatty - yet full of insight, much more than 'scientific' books i've read - and i'm an adult with.

Gezien het feit dat dit boek geschreven is rond het jaar 2000 worden de vergelijkingen met computers en AI in de huidige tijdsgeest wat minder accuraat, maar het blijft een mooie vergelijking voor mensen die de eerste generaties computers gekend hebben.

De boeken van Peter Vermeulen vind ik nog altijd een van de meest accurate beschrijvingen van autisme die ik tot nu toe gelezen heb (vanuit professioneel oogpunt dan).
Ik heb zelf ASS met hogere begaafdheid en kon mij wel herkennen in dit boek, al vond ik bepaalde stukken toch wel heel zwaar en "negatief". Bepaalde zaken die in het boek aan bod komen kan ik bijvoorbeeld wel vlot mee overweg, maar ik kan mij inbeelden dat als je het gemiddelde beeld van autisme neemt, dat de situatie dan misschien wel een ander beeld krijgt.

We kunnen er niet omheen, zelfs 25 jaar later, dat de statistieken nog altijd niet zo rooskleurig zijn. Gelukkig heeft Peter doorheen de jaren nog andere boeken geschreven die ook andere kanten van het autisme belichten en zeker aan te raden zijn.

Vermeulen déploie ici une pédagogie sans limite, accessible et lumineuse, qui permet aux non autistes d’entrer dans un univers encore que trop méconnu. Il restitue à ces personnes une dignité trop souvent niée et révèle la force singulière qui les habite. Les anecdotes et l’humour des situations allège la gravité du sujet et rend la lecture non seulement enrichissante mais aussi profondément humaine et agréable.

Finally finished this. It was written in 2001 but is still £20 on Amazon. I felt it was outdated but that could be because I was relating it to my own experience. The last paragraph reads 'This is a little book for those who have the ability to read intuitively ... The message isn't expressed in the lines but between the lines' - so a book for Typicals, not NDs. 🤷🏻‍♀️
