They heard a voice and followed; they wrestled with their sinful natures and saw in Redemption a cure for their sin; they grappled with almost insurmountable difficulties but overcame. There is evidence that they possessed within themselves an indwelling Spirit Who moved them with compassion for the unlovable and supplied them with resources from a Heavenly base. The Holy Spirit, a present-day Resident, moved upon their hearts to do God’s will. Was there a heathen tribe unevangelized? The Lord of Harvest knew where to find His prepared vessel to fill that need! Was it a tribe who needed the Word of God in their own language? He knew whom to call as a translator! Was it a downtrodden race overrun by selfish overlords? He had His deliverer. Had Churchmen tried to denude the Bible of its glorious inspiration? He knew men, mighty in the Scripture, to restore it to its pristine glory! Was it to be an intercessor? He could whisper His call to travail and place His groanings within those willing for the inconvenience!The Acts of the Apostles did not end two thousand years ago, but His disciples have all down through the centuries quietly moved out into ripened harvest fields. God has never lacked His Peters to go to the household of a Cornelius; His Pauls ready for Gentile peoples; His Stephens prepared for one brief sermon in which a Saul of Tarsus is pricked with the goads of the Almighty; His Philips who are so consecrated they can leave a revival and go desert way to meet one inquiring, Ethiopian Eunuch. He still has His unknown Ananias’s ready to face death in order to go behind shut doors where a praying figure needs illumination.The religious world, so busy and noisy with its man-planned campaigns and philanthropies, is not aware of that silent host moving still by a pillar of fire, guided still by the Lord of Hosts to conquests unrecognized because so seemingly small and silent. Having no spiritual eyes to detect His pathway on the sea, or spiritual ears to hear His still, small voice in quiet command, and no quickened spirit to know the Caanans still to be possessed, such worldlings cannot possibly understand such servants of God. Because unrecognized, these saints of God go on unimpeded by carnal Christians, completing their heaven-sent task. God gifted them with thorns in the flesh and with cracks in their earthen vessels in order to protect them. He has permitted their lives, in many cases, to be preserved for us in biographies, diaries, and magazines. How we pray that these readings may stimulate Christians of our day to expect a close relationship with their God so that they too might fulfill, in our needy time, the will of the Father.
