It is a great book and gave me plent of ideas for my business! I just don't give it a 5 star because it is (justifiably) more focused in North America. If i was opening my business in USA would be for sure a 5-star book. But even living in Europe, it is still super useful.

The book is good for those looking to start a career in hospitality management (and in this case, it is an absolute must-read). It is, however, shallow for more experienced professionals. It's focus is on bigger hotels or chains, making it also a less useful resource for those managing boutique hotels, guest houses, BnBs or serviced apartments. I would recommend the book for students, or entrepreneurs starting out on the hospitality journey. I would not recommend it so much if you already have a base on which you would like to build upon or for small business owners.

Great foundation for those aspiring to work in Hospitality!

This book represents a set of guidelines for owning a hotel, working within or understanding the hospitality industry. It explains the advantages and disadvantages of different types of business strategies such as low cost and differentiation. It identifies guidelines on how to create and communicate a mission statement. It discusses the types of ownership within the real estate industry. It describes some methods to value properties namely the cost approach, cash flow approach, and the sales comparison. The book provides insights into the legal environment for real estate, and it defines best practices to address labor union issues. It lists the common leadership competencies namely personal excellence, effective communication, relationships, and an environment with cross teams. It describes on how to acquire the traits of successful leaders through self awareness, knowledge of the organization, goal setting, acknowledgement of good performance and correction of poor ones. The book highlights that organizations that focus on interpersonal skills rather than work tasks, tends to perform well. The book underscores that the primary goal in the hospitality industry is to enhance the guest' experience. One the memorable quotes of the book is the following: a brand is nothing more or less than a set of promises. The strength of your brand and the value of your company is built on your ability to keep those promises.

I am new to hospitality business and this book was a great resource to get me started. Cornell regarded as the best place in the world in the subject. Information is concise, easy-to understand and highly applicable.

The first part of the book, dealing with managing human capital, managing career, choosing a place to work is absolutely fantastic and offers a common sense logical framework for career progression.

Later sections delve into hotel operations, describing the essence of hotel operations.

Great book, especially in terms of know-how of interpersonal relationships in business:

Integrity dividend (how keeping your word translates into financial gains)
Listening skills
Look at your immediate boss, is he interested in developing you as a leader?

Those in the business will find this textbook very useful.
