Divergent Parody: Detergent

Rate this book
From Amazon's best-selling parody author, Reid Mockery, comes Detergent. Beverly Cryer (Vurl) has to choose a dystopian faction to live with for the rest of her life. If she doesn't make it through initiation, she'll be factionless and declared a Detergent. But, Vurl is determined not to spend the rest of her life doing everyone else's laundry. She is an independent young woman with skills she doesn't even know about and with the help of handsome number Two she'll not only make it through initiation, she'll save the city from disaster.

Okay, that's the serious book pitch. This is a book that makes fun of Divergent. It's a parody, so it follows the same basic story but is more outrageous, silly, stupid and all the other things that make a great parody great. Mockery has a proven track record delivering laughs and this one doesn't disappoint. If you loved Divergent, try Detergent!

About the author

Reid Mockery

19 books82 followers
Reid Mockery is Amazon's number one selling parody author. Consistently funny, he has successfully mocked Fifty Shades, Divergent and now John Green's The Fault In Our Stars. His work has earned a loyal following and he rewards his readers with fast moving parodies, that are short, cheap and guaranteed to brighten your day. Granted, it takes a special gift to be this stupid, but Reid seems to have it by the boatload.

Reid doesn't exactly look like Austin Powers, but he often channels his inner spirit. This image captures what Reid is feeling, so let's leave it at that.

When Reid Mockery makes parodic fun of a book, it is the greatest compliment that book can ever obtain.

He doesn't drink bottled water often. But, when he does, it's from Walmart.

Reid Mockery is so sexy, women buy and read his books by the thousands, just so they can run their fingers down the screen and feel his thick E ink. His words are like poetry, if poetry were entertaining.

He lives an anonymous life in the state of Tennessee searching for the next genre of books to skewer with his wicked sense of humor. Although he has written other books, he is best known for this best-selling parodies that make fun of the best selling books. This ground-breaking work has catapulted Mockery to the top of the Amazon sales charts to which Reid responds, "Yeah, Baby. Yeah!"

OMG. That’s the most crazy and funny thing I’ve read in years.

Absurd and plenty of clever allusions to the original story, Detergent is a very complete parody that doesn’t lack anything. I had a lot of fun reading it and decoding all references. Something as simple as Four being named Two gives a constant humor to the story, and also the fact that they changed the letters order from Tobias to Sobiet is the maximum. Another detail that made me laugh is the criticism of some characteristics from the original book, for example, the fact of not knowing if it would be in a trilogy, and also some lacks of the plot.

I won’t say nothing more because it’s funnier if you read it by your own.

OMG.

Me he divertido muchísimo leyéndola y descifrando las referencias.

1. ¿Amaste Divergente?

Si=Pasa a la pregunta 2.
No= Lee este el libro

Si= No leas este libro
No= Lee este libro

3. ¿Disfrutas el humor de pastelazo?

Si= Lee este libro
No= No leas este libro

I had to read Divergent, just so I could read Mockery's parody. I've been a fan of his for some time since he did the Fifty Shades Parodies.

This one is quite funny, but the problem is Divergent was actually a pretty good book as opposed to Fifty Shades. There was less to make fun of, but Mockery still manages to make fun of it.

His characters are stupid and over the top just what we expect in good parody literature. Definitely worth $3. But, he still has a ton of typos.

I enjoyed it. But, you really need to read Divergent first.

Lección aprendida: no leer parodias.

I completely despised this book. It was awful. I read it on my kindle and nearly threw it across my bedroom. Seriously, people, I don't recommend this if you're a fan on the Divergent series/ movie!!!!!!!!!

I read this because, while I TOTALLY LOVE Divergent, I have a tendency to make fun of things I like. Parodies are definitely a thing I enjoy because even in the best of books there are plot problems, hilarious, overdone tropes, and just in general things that altered are funny.

Three stars because there were some very funny things, some things I loved, and even some things, admittedly, that weren't well explained in the first book of Divergent, I feel it still could have been better written. There were, in my opinion, better ways of "mocking"/illustrating/paroding particular scenes. Some scenes line up perfectly in an inverse parallel, but some didn't feel as if the source material had been very well researched.

Overall, if you're into laughing at good books for their few flaws + some immature humor this book would be right up your alley. For me, it was a nice break in the ordinary but definitely not life-changing.

I found this book very stupid ridiculous and dumb. It totally ruins divergent. Don't waste your money on this stupid book. It ruined divergent and its just lame. Not even a good book for people who haven't read divergent.

This is truly the most ridiculous thing I have ever read.

It's been a seriously long time since I read the original "Divergent" trilogy but some of it came back to me as I clamored my way through this absurd parody.

Seeing the title had me in hysterics and I had really high hopes this would make me laugh out loud but unfortunately it was more cringy than funny for me.

I guess parodies is just not my thing.

It was a quick, painful read. It followed the orginal storyline better than the movie. If you enjoy the juvenile, slapstick behavior, you may quite enjoy this, but for me it was quite jarring.

Lesson learned: don't read the parodies.

Completamente recomendable.

If I could give zero stars, I would. There was very little funny about this. Just a lot of toilet humour. Actual toilet humour - every scene seemed to feature someone urinating or defecating. And a dose of homophobia in changing the 'Capture the Flag' scene to a 'Capture the Fag' scene. And changing character names to vulgar names that sounds like something Bart Sompson would call Moes to ask for. Very poor parody.

4.5* rounded up simply because if I give it 5* I’ll have to add it to my 5* goodreads shelf and that would be embarrassing.

This was the funniest piece of ✨literature✨ I have ever read and I will not stand for a single ounce of criticism attacking my sense of humor K?

I am not exactly sure how I feel about this book. It was undeniably funny and it brought out a lot of things from divergent that truly made no sense and then turned them into something hilarious. I was particularly fond of the jokes about why the dauntless don't just wait for the trains (or in this case, garbage trucks) to stop before they get on and off. FUNNY. But, beyond that, there were only snippets of things that were truly amusing. Most of the humor was uncomfortable; there were a lot of bathroom jokes and awkward pun names that made me squirm. These are laughable to some people, but I am not one of them.

So, overall, I would recommend this to fans of divergent for the few moments of laughability, but be warned that you will have to sift through some pretty uncomfortable moments to find them. If you enjoy bathroom humor than this is your book. Will I read other things by Reid Mockery (which is a hilarious pun that took me longer than I would like to admit to figure out)? Yes. I admire people who can make light of something serious and see a story in a completely different way. I will just suck it up and deal with the awkward parts because the moments of hilarity are worth it. Parodies rock. Peace out.

I was very excited to read this parody as I really enjoyed the Divergent series. However, I unfortunately found the book very underwhelming. I did not find many aspects of the novel to be amusing except for some of the names. Overall, the novel did not appear to be very well thought out with constantly recycling similar ideas, which I assume were meant to be amusing. I really wish that this story was more developed and thought through.

This is a parody of Divergent so it’s important to keep this in mind!!

That being said, there were some moments I laughed but at the end of the day this felt like it was written by a middle school boy who thinks unhygienic bathroom habits is funny. The book had more typos and grammatical errors than well crafted jokes & all in all felt like really really poorly written fan fiction.

Read it if you don’t mind at all the quality & just want a quick read to your reading goal.

This book was weird... Funny, but weird... I understand Reid Mockery published this quickly, before there was another Divergent parody written... There were a handful of typos, which I feel shouldn't have been there... (Even if the publication was rushed) It's also hard to make fun of a book that is well-written, which this author acknowledged...

He's done it again!

Reid Mockery is one of the funniest authors out there. I've only read two of his books, but he is already one of my favorite authors. The names he came up with got me every time, and the puns kill me. Caution: Some discriminatory content and many PG-13 comments. I could not stop laughing!
