I only gave it a 5 because... I couldn't give it 100! I loved this book because It has a life lesson. Plus it revealed me in. Even when my friend was texting me I just kept reading. ( and I love my friends )
Really reads like a 13-year old is telling the story
I was able to get into this, but at 13 my mom wanted me to wear mini-skirts and stuff- but, I wasn't interested in dressing like other girls like that so i really get the dynamic between the main character and her aunt (though her aunt actually wants her to wear nice dresses and stuff not inappropriate for a 13 year old).
Really a good read for kids around the age this book is aimed at I believe.
The beginning of a cute middle school series. Bex and her sister lives with her aunt, uncle and triplets and when you are thirteen crazy things happen: you have to buy bras, you babysit your younger cousins and your aunt may bribe you with a new bedroom if you join a society girls group.
Bex Carter: Aunt Jeanie's Revenge is a great little book on the importance of friendship and being kind rather than being cool or fitting in.
Our main character Bex is, at first glance, "normal" thirteen year old girl. She's neither popular nor an outcast. Neither thin nor fat (although she is sometimes teased for being big-boned and having, umm, "developed" aka not the skinny prepubescent). She likes football and the colour green.
One day, her Aunt Jeanine, who she lives with following the death of her parents, tells her that she can have her much longed for own bedroom on the condition that she joins the Junior Silver Roses, a club she soon finds to be full of some of the nastiest, most selfish and hypocritical girls she has ever met.
"The purpose of this organization sounds great in theory, but it's all fake. You say you teach character? These girls are some of the most stuck-up, awful people I've ever met. They are the exact opposite of everything you say you stand for, yet you sit here and applaud them."
While there, Bex struggles with wanting to fit in, but also not wanting to be unkind. A girl named Geraldine seeks out her friendship, but is a bit of a walking disaster and threatens to drag Bex down with her. Will Bex choose to fit in in order to get her new bedroom, or will she side with the kooky but well-meaning Geraldine? And will she manage to improve her relationship with Aunt Jeanine? You'll just have to read it to find out!
Smith's voice is spot on. It's hard to believe this book wasn't written by a thirteen year old girl.
Read the book in 3 nights and loved it .. I would say this would be a age rating of 10-13. Really good book even though it's free. Definitely will be reading the next one .
First book in the series about twelve year old Bex and her struggle to fit in a difficult situation. Not only is Beth having the usual coming of age issues with school and peers, but she is living with Aunt Jeanie and her family because Bex’s mother disappeared long ago and her father is in prison. While her aunt is obsessively concerned with “fitting in with society,” Bex enjoys sports and really wishes to be left alone. Things get tough for Bex when she is forced to audition for the “Silver Rose” group. Bex hates the idea, but she really needs to have her own space, the bribe her aunt holds in front of her.
Much of the story involves the adventures and pranks that Bex must endure, and her struggle to walk the line between what is truly right and wrong. Middle school and young teen readers will be sure to find many situations that parallel their own at home and school. Throughout the tale, many of the characters grow and change. The book is both serious and humorous with a good mix of the traditional and modern.
This book will appeal to readers nine and older. There is just the right mix of dialogue, shift from first person to third person narrative is well done. Can’t wait to see what happens in Bex’s next adventure.
It was a cool book. Most of the Members from that Club for 13-15 year olds were a little stuck up but great book for helping a teen prepare for the real world. ;)

Please make more books in 2018🙌💍💜🎈 I finally finish reading and that ava is something else and I'm supa happy that Bex and Aunt Jeanie has finally made up
Bex and her sister are living with Aunt Jeanie because of family problems where they can't live with their parents, or their grandmother.
Bex refers to Aunt Jeanie as "Aunt Meany," and apparently with good reason. Her aunt is constantly trying to make Bex into a girl she isn't -- and Bex is constantly getting into trouble, even when she tries to be good.
Things just get worse when Aunt Jeanie wants her to join a society for girls, called the Silver Roses. Bex is positive her aunt has enrolled her in the Silver Roses to punish her. The girls learn to do makeup and dress up and dancing and how to do community service. That's fine on the surface, but some of the upstanding young ladies that Aunt Jeanie wants her to learn to be like, to become friends with -- they aren't very nice girls. Bex is well aware of the irony and hypocrisy when one of the worst bullies in her grade announces that her goal in life is to stop bullying!
Through a series of misadventures and silent grumbling, Bex learns some things about herself, and even tries to do the right thing, even when it hurts. She and Aunt Jeanie both learn a few things, and their relationship might just be improving.
Love the sense of humor and accurate insight into the trials and tribulations of a girl who just wants to be left alone to be herself.
Bex Carter is a likable but imperfect protagonist. She lives with her Aunt Jeanie after her dad goes to prison and her mom abandons her. Aunt Jeanie and Bex often clash heads over many things. Aunt Jeanie makes a deal with Bex. If Bex becomes a member of the Silver Rose Society, Aunt Jeanie will give Bex a dream room. The problem is that doing well in the Silver Roses seems far more critical to Aunt Jeanie than Bex. As Silver Roses, the girls face several tests to see if they qualify.
Bex has problems with many girls in the group because they are mean and bullying types who seem to take pride in making things hard for others. Only one other girl (Geraldine) trying out for the Silver Roses seems despised more than Bex. Geraldine wants to be best friends with Bex, but Bex feels smothered by her. Who is chosen and how the girls act is a significant part of the plot.
What I thought the author did exceptionally well was to create the dramatics of peers in the middle school years. Many girls can be bullies as well as the boys. What they're good at is pretending they are something they're not. The overall arching theme in this coming of age novel is to what lengths are bullies willing to go to create havoc, and will Bex have the motivation to act like them or create her own path?
It would've been fine if not for the ending. It seems just a childrens book trying to teach kids to not be mean and the usual.
That said, the whole ending has hugely been sped up and horribly wrong. Showing Aunt Jeanie as a loving person in the end is horrible. If you want to teach children something, don't teach them that manipulation and abuse come from a place of love. And the whole story about how being a snob and pretending to be nice to someone you dont like is not good wasn't lived upto in the last chapter with the girls not really accepting Geraldine and giving each other looks.
It made an anti-pretending-to-be-something-youre-not book into a pretend-story itself.
The last 2 chapters completely pulled an ordinary mediocre story through a vast pile of mud.
This is a cute book which also has some good lessons on bullying and expectations. Bex is staying with her aunt who she thinks hates her. Her aunt wants her to join an exclusive club called the Silver Roses which consists of fairly rich and ultra-snobby girls. Bex doesn't want that but she wants a separate, nicely decorated bedroom her aunt promises her if she'll agree to join.
She has to pass a series of meeting tests, though and a girl, Geraldine, seems to latch on to her. Geraldine is a girl that doesn't fit in at all with the others and they let her know that. (She's afraid of ketchup and strawberries, by the way.)
Anyhow, there's a lot of things that go on and Bex really shines towards the end of the story. I enjoyed it.
Surprisingly, this is one of the best books I've read this year. Bex, her friends and all of their hi jinks was a different pace than what I am used to. Can't say I'd be picking anymore of these books up as I am way too old for this demographic, but I'd definitely recommend it as a light read for someone wanting to take a brain break.
I really enjoyed reading this book about teenage misfits. We don't always have to fit the mold and some never fit. That's ok as long as you're not hurting anyone. He yourself and be happy with who you are.
I would recommend this book to my best friend and non beauty queen because she hates those kids of people. The snotty when adults aren’t around, but angels when they are around.
For my friend Ellie she is 11 The book is all about someone's social life And it shows you that you may not really like someone and then became good friends or good family.
It's a great book for teenage girls who are very tall for their age and for girls who can relate to this story.... The book is very funny, it has savage moments, girl power and obviously an unbreakable friendship of 2 girls
I absolutely loved this book and will see if I can get more
This series seem to be great and I really love how it shows you things from a teenagers perspective and the prices are very low . I enjoy reading about this book and would read morw
A fun, quick read. Bex's struggle between trying to be one of the cool girls, and trying to be a friend to an outcast is relatable. The first chapter was an info dump. The book would have been been better if it started with the action in Chapter 2.
