El arte tibetano de los sueños

Rate this book

I bought this as a possible complement to Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche's more Dzogchen-oriented The Tibetan Yogas Of Dream And Sleep (an excellent, much-read book). Dr. Nida focuses more on the medical, physical side of dreams, which seemed interesting and refreshing.

However, a classic problem with Dr. Nida's books is he has a difficult time deciding what to tell you. Often practices are sketched out just enough to be intriguing, but not enough that you can actually tell what they are. This is his safety mechanism to make sure you don't practice without a teacher, and I respect that, but often he cuts so much out that what is left is a genuinely confusing text. By contrast, Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche will give you enough about, say, tummo to get the point of it, but not enough that you could try it at home for funsies.

The illustrations in Dr. Nida's book are pixellated and blurry, and often are presenting critical information, so this too is frustrating. Concepts are introduced and dropped way too fast for me. Some charts refer to concepts and/or Tibetan terms that have not been previously introduced at all, and will not be explained at any point.

A rigorous editor could have helped this volume be indispensable. It still has important information in it, but Dr. Nida has a lot more to give than the unstructured nature of this book is able to support. By contrast, his volume on nejang Nejang: Tibetan Self-Healing Yoga is excellent and highly-recommended. My wish is that Dr. Nida works with an editor and one day re-presents this material, because he really does have a unique expertise which would be so welcome.

Extremely disappointed in this book! If you’re looking for a book on dream analysis, don’t buy this book! It’s not what it purports to be. I’d say maybe 5% of this book is actually about dream interpretation. Mostly this book is about determining the constitution of the individual according to Buddhist cosmology in Tibetan medicine as well as the different channels and energies in the body. The few pages of dream case studies draw conclusions about the meaning of the dreams without explaining how those conclusions were arrived at. They provided a framework for dream analysis and then didn’t even apply it in their own examples! This is simply not a dream interpretation book. The title is misleading.
